Records of other activities are also included, for example, menus and programmes for social functions and guides to the Annual Exhibition at Westminster Central Hall. There is a small amount of material relating to Miss Louisa La Teller Swann, LHTA president 1928-9.

Records of the Knott and Legg families including papers relating to the naval service of Stephen Knott, 1849-1905; marriage and death certificates, 1858-1933; burial records and undertakers' bills, 1905-1912; paying-in books, 1897-1923; and family photographs.

The archive consists of the official working papers of the Chief Rabbinate from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Files, volumes, bundles of papers, photographs, prints, video tapes, publications and leaflets make up the bulk of the collection. The Chief Rabbis represented in this collection are Nathan Adler (1868-1901), Hermann Adler (1868-1921), Joseph Hertz (1899-1946), Israel Brodie (1917-1967), Immanuel Jakobovits (1913-1992) and Jonathan Sacks (1988-2004). Also included are some papers of the Deputy for the Chief Rabbi, Harris Lazarus (1942-1950).

The archive is primarily concerned with the activities of the Chief Rabbinate. Because of the cosmopolitan nature of the office there are files on Jewish congregations overseas which are of interest, also some papers on the Holocaust and its immediate aftermath (ACC/2805/06/05/1-11). The varying interests of individual Chief Rabbis are reflected in the collection: for instance Immanuel Jakobovits' role in Jewish medical ethics.

A small number of records survive from around 1868 for the Chief Rabbinate of Nathan Adler and more from the late 1870s onwards - around the time Hermann Adler began to undertake many of his father's duties for him. The records consist of bundles of letters to the Chief Rabbi from communal organisations and individuals in Britain and overseas.

Records of George Brown, chandler, 1821-1843, comprising letter book dated 1821-1842, which contains information on Brown's business dealings including much comment on the state of shipping at various times, many references to steam vessels as early as 1821, and a large number of letters and memoranda relating to the seizure by the Portuguese of the steamship 'Lord of the Isles' in which Brown had an interest and subsequent attempts to get redress.

Also a memoranda book, 1833-1843, mainly recording brief memoranda of letters sent and received from 'George' or about 'George' who would appear to have settled in Canada and made attempts at farming and business. Evidence suggests that 'George' was the son of George Brown who was joined for a while in Canada by his mother and sisters. The book gives considerable information concerning shipping to and from North America; settlers in Canada and their acquisition of land; early government of Canada; references to the Canada Company, an account of 'stores required for a settler going to New Zealand' and details of goods sent out to 'George'.

Records of the Manor of Newington Barrow, Islington, comprising court rolls (courts leet and baron).

Records of the Manor of Newington Barrow, Islington. The collection consists of 20 manor court rolls, 2 duplicate court rolls, and a manor survey. The court rolls document the proceedings of courts both baron and leet. Until 1560 these were held on separate occasions, courts baron more frequently than courts leet. The latter were held approximately once a year, on 3 May. From 1560 both courts were conducted on the same occasion. The proceedings of courts both leet and baron are recorded on the same roll, in date order, throughout. The rolls are predominantly of parchment.

Tenure of the manor from 1877 is untraceable, and the immediate provenance of the rolls is unknown. The presence of annotations on tags attached to certain entries indicates however that the rolls were retained and referred to long after they were created. Most of the rolls include lists of courts held, either on their wrappers or on membranes added to the existing rolls. The labelling of each roll with alphabetical letters also implies they were arranged at a later date so as to be accessible for frequent reference. Gaps in this alphabetical sequence, and in date order, suggest the collection is incomplete. Envelopes postmarked Nov. 1852 and addressed to M G Taylor, Solicitor, 40 Regents Square, London, are attached as markers to rolls dating from 1602, indicating that the collection was at one time in the custody of a solicitor.

Notes on the wrappers indicate that most of the rolls created before 1634 were examined in Chancery by James Symes and Robert Heyhoe, acting on the behalf of Thomas Austen, who was then the defendant in a suit brought by Dame Margaret Hungerford. The nature of the dispute is unknown, but Dame Margaret was the daughter of William Halliday, owner of the Mildmay Estate. This estate, which Margaret inherited in 1645, originated in a copyhold of the Manor of Newington Barrow, and it seems likely therefore that the dispute concerned land tenure.

The records include a comprehensive set of minutes of the Federation; a less comprehensive but nonetheless interesting collection of minute books from the individual congregations; and minutes of other institutions connected with the Federation. There are also financial accounts, reports, property files (including synagogue plans), notice books and correspondence files which give a fuller picture of life of the Federation; and records of the East London Mikvah Committee; Federation Burial Society and London Talmud Torah Council.

Records of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society, relating not only to the everyday administration of the Society (Acc/2899/01 and Acc/2899/02), but also to social and educational activities. Acc/2899/03 contains a large quantity of information relating to the latter. In the main the records date from the beginning of the twentieth century to the 1970's, although there is a sizeable amount of earlier material, and a small amount for later years

Records of the National Union of Teachers, comprising London Members Committee minutes and Extra-Metropolitan Committee and Middlesex Sub-Committee minutes.

Records relating to Holliday and Greenwood, builders, 1871-1978. Includes several scrapbooks of newspaper cuttings and pamphlets, and articles and deed of partnership between James Holliday and Benjamin Greenwood.

Records of The Aerated Bread Company Limited, 1869-1885, comprising a set of minutes of the Board of Directors, and a register of company premises.

Records of the Western Synagogue, 1767-1980. The earliest records are regulations and accounts of the Hebra Kadisha Shel Gemilluth Hassadim, 1767. Minutes of the Westminster Jews Free School, 1821-1838, are especially interesting. The bulk of the collection, however, consists of twentieth century administrative and financial records.
