Collection of research into the local history of Friern Barnet and environs, carried out by C.O. Banks. The papers include copies of court rolls, research notes, lectures, statistics, extracts from parish records, copies and extracts of wills, legal proceedings, notes on important buildings and people, newspaper cuttings, licences, geneaological notes, sales particulars, estate agents plans, reports, photographs, articles, books and pamphlets on the local history, and maps of Friern Barnet and surrounding areas.

This collection contains two plans drawn by Samuel Robinson relating to Saint Dunstan and All Saints' Church, Stepney and West Ham Abbey, West Ham. Both give detailed depictions and descriptions of the buildings and landscape features in their immediate area.

The West Ham Abbey plan (LMA/4458/01/002) gives very detailed views and notes of garden furniture and planting schemes in the adjacent Spring Gardens. For example the plan refers to: 'a square piece fenc'd with reeds wherein cucumbers are nurished' and 'Beds of tulips, pinks and carnations, French marigolds and sweet williams and other flowers. There are several plots of cabbages and colewerts, carrots and parsnips among the trees'.

The collection contains photographs used to illustrate newspaper stories for the Hull Daily News about events in London. The photographs cover a range of subjects and have been organised thematically into 25 series, including: life in London during the Second World War and post-war reconstruction; transportation in London (including railways, roads, rivers and airports); churches; memorials and monuments; bridges; hotels; office buildings; foreign embassies; museums and art galleries; hospitals; sporting venues; markets; government buildings and theatres. There are also photographs showing particularly famous streets in London, photographs of palaces and royal residences in London, of the Tower of London, of Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column and photographs of the Palace of Westminster (including Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Hall).

Almost all papers relate to George Meering's experience in World War One. They comprise typewritten contemporary accounts of his war experience and as prisoner held by the Turkish, correspondence (including letter from General Edmund Allenby), newspaper articles, photographs of regiment and nurses, dinner invitation, medals and other memorabilia.

Records from the Lee Conservancy Board Engineer's Office at Enfield Lock. The engineer appears also to have been responsible to the Lee Conservancy Catchment Board (for example, see Acc 2423/062).

The collection consists of nineteenth and twentieth century plans, papers and volumes concerning the Lee Conservancy Board, the Lee Conservancy Catchment Board, and the British Waterways Board, covering many aspects of maintenance work on waterways and administration. The papers comprise:

• Plans 1760-1954 (ACC 2423/P/0001-3786) A large proportion of the collection consists of plans, many reused with annotations. Items relate to repair work on sewers and buildings, improvements to rivers and pumping stations, and the purchase of land for new projects.
  • Parliamentary Plans 1840-1965 (ACC 2423/PP/001-041) Plans produced for or submitted for Parliamentary Sessions to illustrate forthcoming work on waterways, for example, sewerage work, or waterways affected by the construction of railways.
  • Specific Plans 1867-1964 (ACC 2423/R/001-076) A set of plans illustrating large projects, which seems to have been kept as a set distinct and separate from the main ACC 2423/P plan series by the placing of the letter `R' before each original plan number.
  • General Plans 1828-1974 (ACC 2423/X/001-300) A collection of more general plans relating to projects focusing on improvements to the Lea River and Navigation, the Stort River and Navigation, the Bow Back Rivers and the Grand Union Canal.
  • Ordnance Survey Maps 1838-1955 (ACC 2423/05/001-139) Maps used to plan forthcoming work, with frequent annotations, particularly for the drafting of courses for sewers.
  • Engineers' Reports and Letter Books 1858-1961 (ACC 2423/001-136) Sets of volumes and files recording reports, contracts and specifications, and other maintenance records.
  • Administrative and Legal Documents 1829-1977 (ACC 2423/AL/001-119) Administrative files relating to accidents and damage, together with inventories of assets, minutes of meetings, and engineers' reports. Legal documents include material on agreements for sale and tenancy, the conveyance of property, and contracts.
  • Engineering and Maintenance Records 1892-1978 (ACC 2423/EM/001-097) Records relating to the maintenance and improvement of waterways, including development plans, moratorium surveys, pumping records, and related graphs and operation sheets.

Records of the Central Synagogue, Great Portland Street, consisting of minute books of the sub-committee for Building the Central Synagogue, 1866-1871; architect's report to the Building Committee, 1856; seat book; financial records and photograph of the synagogue interior, 1928.

Copy of plan showing division of the Heaver Estate between executors. The estate consists of houses in Parsons Green, on Wandsworth Bridge Road, Rosebury Road, Hazelbury Road, Oakbury Road, Cranbury Road and Snowbury Road. The map is undated but appears to be mid twentieth century.

Plans and drawings for the proposed redevelopment of the area of Paddington north of the Great Western Railway and south of the Grand Junction Canal and dissected by the Harrow Road. The proposals are for replacement of narrow congested streets and small houses with a dual carriage speedway and blocks of flats with open ground in-between them.

Records of the Greater London Council Architect's Department's Historic Buildings Division, which were passed to the London Region of English Heritage. Highlights of the archive include plans and files for the refurbishment of Covent Garden Central and Flower Markets, which was carried out during the 1970s and 1980s. There is practically a full set of plans, around 800 in total, showing the main project and a range of sub-projects. The earliest drawing in the whole collection is the original site plan for Covent Garden, dating to 1828.

Other large projects include the rehabilitation of houses in Albury Street, Deptford (1954-1979), restoration of the terraces at Crystal Palace (1952-1989) and restoration work at Holland House (1952-1985). There are also plans of a group of projects covering work on Thames bridges, giving information on superstructure and cast iron work. Related files can be found in the list for GLC/AR/HB/01.

The collection contains a large and important series of plans and drawings for buildings and other projects, dating between 1828 and 1993. The GLC allocated job numbers to each project it undertook, with the prefix HB, and these plans are listed in job number order and are also arranged by size (our ref: ACC/3499/EH/02 for AO size and ACC/3499/EH/05 for AQ size). Plans outside the GLC period, ie 1828-1965 and 1986-1993, were produced by the LCC or by English Heritage and consequently do not have job numbers. These plans have been listed in alphabetical order by the premises or street involved and again have been arranged by size (ACC/3499/EH/03 for AO size and ACC/3499/EH/06 for AQ size).

Most of the plans were used as working drawings, and many were re-used for later projects. Where possible the original order of the drawings has been re-established, but as a result of this re-use there are some gaps and many will not be in date order as old plans were removed and other contractors' drawings added in.

In many cases the files for individual projects will complement the plans, and they too have been arranged by number; those produced by the GLC's Historic Buildings Division were given reference numbers beginning AR/HB (the HB number will correspond with the number allocated to any plans), and those produced by English Heritage after 1986 had the prefix LD. These original reference numbers have been included in the main description field of this list (ACC/3499/EH/07/01).

Other material relating to individual projects has been listed as ACC/3499/EH/07/02-05. This includes specification and some folded contract drawings, surveys and reports, photographs and order books for repairs. Framed awards from the Civic Trust, which were awarded to English Heritage for certain refurbishment projects, have been catalogued as ACC/3499/EH/11/01-02.

Administrative Files were generated by the GLC, and by English Heritage through its Works, Administration and Survey and General Sections. They include such topics as staffing, finance, organisation, technical files and civic design, and include minutes of several bodies, such as the GLC's Historic Buildings Division itself and the Faculty Jurisdiction Commission. They have been listed as ACC/3499/EH/08/01-06. Some town and borough planning schemes are also included in the collection, under ACC/3499/EH/10.

Borough Lists: English Heritage began compiling a "visible index" of buildings within the Greater London area during the 1970s. It was intended to be a reference point for listed buildings, those proposed for listing and those on the supplementary list (i.e. Grade III listed). The Grade III listing was subsequently abolished and the buildings either absorbed into the main statutory list or included in councils' own Local Lists.

The volumes of the visible index in this collection (ACC/3499/EH/01) cover the London Boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Enfield, Hammersmith, Haringey, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow. Much more of Greater London was included in the index but the volumes were subsequently lost.

During the early 1980s the whole of Greater London was systematically re-listed, and the lists published in book form, in borough order, by the Department of the Environment. Most of these "Green back" books are represented in this collection (ACC/3499/EH/09/01-05), with the exception of those for Enfield, Havering, Haringey, Merton, Newham, Southwark and Waltham Forest. Some supplementary lists and local lists are also included.

Records of J Lyons and Company Limited, food manufacturers and caterers, 1891-1995. The archives reflect all aspects of the company's history. There are some of the usual company records relating to management, shareholding and administration, but the collection is particularly strong in what may be termed ephemera. There are hundreds of photographs, from 1887 up to the present day, a few films and videos, and large collections of press cuttings, advertisements, menus and even a set of lithographs which were commissioned by the company after the Second World War as a way of brightening up Lyons Corner Houses.

Records of the Independent Gas Light and Coke Company, 1827-1875, comprising minutes of Directors and Shareholders meetings with some enclosures including letters, notices, circulars, and prospectuses.

Records of the Royal Commercial Traveller's School, 1845-1965, including a photograph of a painting of John Robert Cuffley; copy of minutes of a Meeting held at the London Tavern on 30th December 1845 concerned with the founding of this school; a brief record of principal events from 1845 to 1905; press cuttings; papers relating to Royal patronage of the School; papers relating to fundraising; copy of a speech delivered by Charles Dickens about the Schools in December 1859; event programmes; copies of the rules of the Foundation; Memorandum of Articles of Association of the Royal Commercial Travellers Schools Trust Limited; annual reports 1945-1967; prospectus and photographs of the buildings at Hatch End, Pinner.

Papers collected by the solicitors in the course of their work, comprising the marriage settlement and related documents of John Powell of Clapton House, Hackney, and his bride Frances Irby, daughter of Reverend Paul Irby of Cottisbrooke, Northants, 1850-1908; lease for 1 Lancaster Avenue, Enfield, 1909, and agreement of Randal, Earl of Berkeley to sell part of the Cranford Park Estate in Cranford, Harlington and Hayes, 1931.

The Guildhall Library Prints and Maps collection is a diverse collection of graphic material relating to the City of London and surrounding areas, 1553-2008; including prints, sketches, drawings, engravings, etchings, panoramas, photographs and lantern slides of various subjects including streets and buildings, Second World War bomb damage, churches, people, City of London Corporation personnel and events including the Lord Mayor, statues and memorials, the Thames, and markets. Also maps, plans and surveys of London and surrounding counties, London streets, parish boundaries, railways, tramways, and sewers. With a collection of ephemeral items including posters, bills, cuttings, printed menus, invitations, exhibition ephemera, playing cards, trade cards, booksellers' labels, satires, and theatre playbills and programmes.

This collection comprises slides used by Ivor Pfuell in his lectures on the history and development of London. The slides were collected during the 1970s and 1980s, although they depict London locations and landmarks through the ages.
