Biographical history

Samuel Robinson, surveyor, was active circa 1741 and based at Cockhill, Shadwell. The plan in this collection relating to Saint Dunstan and All Saints church, Stepney states that he 'surveys land and buildings, draws out plans and maps of estates, and carefully calculates all sorts of measurements' (LMA/4458/01/001).

This collection contains two plans drawn by Samuel Robinson relating to Saint Dunstan and All Saints' Church, Stepney and West Ham Abbey, West Ham. Both give detailed depictions and descriptions of the buildings and landscape features in their immediate area.

The West Ham Abbey plan (LMA/4458/01/002) gives very detailed views and notes of garden furniture and planting schemes in the adjacent Spring Gardens. For example the plan refers to: 'a square piece fenc'd with reeds wherein cucumbers are nurished' and 'Beds of tulips, pinks and carnations, French marigolds and sweet williams and other flowers. There are several plots of cabbages and colewerts, carrots and parsnips among the trees'.
