Papers of John Gordon Thomson, 1914-1941, comprise a personal file relating to his appointment, his position and work at the School of Tropical Medicine, and his death (1914-1941) and correspondence with various individuals relating to tropical diseases including blackwater fever (1921-1929).

MSS.2208-2216 comprise notebooks and essays. MSS.2210-2211 are broader in subject than the rest of this block of material, comprising lectures in physiology; the remainder of the manuscripts in this block focus on issues of specifically tropical medicine. Kala-azar and malaria are particularly featured. MS.2208 also includes a list of birds in Dunduan. MSS.5692-5697 consist of illustrative material (primarily water-colours from microscope slides relating to tropical parasitic diseases), correspondence, cuttings and offprints, and miscellaneous other papers relating to Donovan's work on tropical medicine.

Papers of Thomas Graham comprising notes, chiefly on chemistry, and some correspondence, 1821-1868.

MSS.2968-2988 are chiefly related to Hurry's publications; the best-represented subject in this block of material is "vicious circles" in disease and in general society. In addition, there are papers relating to Hurry's work on Imhotep (vizier and physician to the Pharoah Zoser) and to the woad plant. MSS.6821-6823 comprise correspondence: on the Japanese edition of Vicious Circles in Disease (MS.6821), on the woad plant (MS.6822) and general correspondence (MS.6823).

Traité des fièvres. The general title, and that on the spine is 'Leçons de Médecine'. The work is probably incomplete, as at the end of the second volume is 'Fin du tome second': it appears to be a student's notes of lectures, probably given at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris. On page 416 of volume one, the date 1814 occurs, which is stated to be 'l'année dernière'. Produced in Paris.

Lecture notes, case notes and abstracts of printed works compiled by Lyon Falkener in various professional positions, 1861-1948: most importantly as locum tenens at Claybury Asylum and the Western Fever Hospital, Fulham, and as Assistant House Surgeon at the Metropolitan Hospital, London. A few personal items, largely testimonials and photographs supplement these, together with medical papers by Falkener. Falkener's later career as a general practitioner at Icart, Guernsey, is represented by a collection of his prescriptions.

Disputatio quinta et ultima pathologica, in qua agitur de curandis affectibus praeter naturam. The first few leaves of Vol. II have a marginal running title 'Onofrii Ricci Practica'. This volume is dated 1650 at the end. These are notes of Lectures in a Course on the general Practice of Medicine. As in that MS. there is the inscription: 'Ex Rev. D. Indico Mancini' written on the verso of the last leaf of each volume. On the verso of the last leaf of Vol. I: 'Indicus Antonius Mancinus Anno MDCLXXXiii': and on the second fly-leaf of Vol. II 'Del Ph[ilippo?] Fidelis Manzi'. Produced in Naples.

Research notes and drafts relating to two major works by Fraser-Harris. MSS.8109-8112, 8114-8120 and 8122 relate to the history of antisepsis and the essay 'Antiseptics before Lister: a historico-medical survey', which was the Prize Essay in the History of Medicine, University of Glasgow, 1932/3. MSS.8236-8255 and 8968-8989 relate to The History and Lore of Cymric Medicine, a proposed Wellcome Historical Medical Museum study that was never published. Wellcome and Fraser-Harris died close to one another and the momentum of the project was lost.

Papers of Dame Harriette Chick: this collection represents a relatively limited record of Chick's long and active career. It is particularly strong on the period around her important work in Vienna, 1919-1921, and includes some material relating to other research on nutritional questions.

The collection covers Lord Moran's life and career. It includes papers (committee minutes, correspondence, notes, printed material, ephemera, articles, parliamentary papers, etc.) re his position as Dean of St Mary's Hospital Medical School, 1920-1945; as President at the Royal College of Physicians, 1941-1950; his role in negotiations over the establishment and structure of the NHS, 1942-1960; as Chairman of the Awards Committee, 1948-1962. His other professional activities are covered in general correspondence files; a series of medical records, including material on Winston Churchill, 1944-1965; subject files relating to his role on various government, educational and medical bodies, including the commission to determine whether Rudolph Hess was mentally fit to stand trial in 1945. The collection includes drafts and papers re Anatomy of Courage (including photocopies of his World War I army notebooks), and Winston Churchill: Struggle for Survival. There is also a section of unpublished writings and speeches, 1921-1970. Papers consulted by Professor Lovell in Australia while writing his biography of Lord Moran, were returned in two batches, the first in April 1990, when he helped with the initial sorting and listing of the papers, and the second in April 1991. Some of these papers have been returned to the main body of the collection, however most have been kept in a separate section in the list (section L). The collection also contains personal and family material, photographs, press cuttings and ephemera, and a section comprising personal and professional papers of Lord Moran's wife Dorothy, Lady Moran (d.1983).

Papers of Peter Daniel, 1971-1990, including correspondence concerning the Jenner Trust and Appeal, Physiological Society, William Gibson, and the Sir Hugh Cairns memorial, plus some notes on medical cases and Daniel's research grant applications.

Papers of Sir Ernest Kennaway, 1899-1957. Most of the items in this collection appear to relate to the later years of Sir Ernest's career. The collection chiefly comprises notebooks on medical issues such as substance-related illnesses and occupational diseases (chiefly cancers) plus a little material on religious issues.

Papers of Lillias Anna Hamilton including correspondence, writings and other papers from career including as personal physician to the Amir of Afghanistan, 1894-1896, Warden of Studley College, Warwickshire (training women for careers in agriculture and horticulture), and doctor in Serbia in 1915 with the Wounded Allies Relief Committee; photographs of Afghanistan. There is little in this collection of specifically medical interest, but it gives some indication of the life, career and varied interests of an early woman doctor.

Papers of and relating to Margaret Lowenfeld and the Institute of Child Psychology, London, 1930s-1970s.

Boxes 1-15 contain material catalogued by the Centre for Family Research, the detailed listing of which is given on the Wellcome Library catalogue and also on the Dr Margaret Lowenfeld Trust website, http://www.lowenfeld.org/.

Boxes 16-23 contain uncatalogued material that cannot currently be made accessible; the majority of this material comprises patient case notes and will thus be closed under the Data Protection Act for some years even when catalogued.

Papers of Sir Edward Mellanby, 1896-1974, notably relating to his research interests in vitamins, nutrition and deficiency and material on his activities subsequent to his retirement as an advisor on questions of research and medical administration. May Tweedy married Edward Mellanby in 1914 and collaborated in his research throughout the rest of their lives together, as well as working independently. It can thus be seen that it is not altogether easy to differentiate between the papers of this couple; for example in Section C of Sir Edward's papers are included a number of files and volumes relating to his wife's work as his associate, while her diaries in Section E contain details of her husband's activities as well as her own. Although Lady Mellanby was Sir Edward's collaborator throughout the course of his career, her papers are on the whole distinct from his and concentrate on her work in research into dentition and dental problems. They are therefore listed separately, and the list annotated at relevant points where there is an overlap. It is clear that these papers are not a complete record of the Mellanbys' careers. It is likely that following Sir Edward Mellanby's death, when the material underwent various moves, some items were lost. However, as for 16 years he was Secretary of the Medical Research Council, the record of those years is to be found among the files of the MRC, although details of the relevant files at the MRC are not yet available.

Papers of Walter Pagel covering most stages of his career and including correspondence, research notes and photographs, 1851-1983. Significant areas covered include section A, which relates to his school and university education, and his dismissal in 1933; section C, which consists of papers (writings and collected letters) relating to his work on tuberculosis; and section D, which relates to his work in medical history. The collection also includes some papers relating to his father, Julius Pagel, in section A.

These papers reflect the careers of the paediatrician, Philip Rainsford Evans, and of his wife Barbara, mainly in her capacity as medical journalist and author, 1923-1989. They include some family and personal material; diaries, correspondence and reports on setting up a Paediatrics Department at Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, 1950s-1970s; material on the activities of the British Paediatric Team in Saigon, 1966-1973, including photographs; P R Evans's correspondence as Medical Adviser to Independent Television Companies Association, 1964-1989; material more generally on P R Evans' professional activities; general medical journalism and related material of Barbara Evans; files relating to her book Life Change on the menopause; her involvement with the Research Council for Complementary Medicine; and the research materials for and correspondence relating to her biography of Helena Wright, Freedom to Choose.

Papers, [1870]-2004, relating to Elizabeth Therese Fanny Foulkes and Siegmund Heinrich Foulkes's activities in clinical practice, teaching and lecturing, writing and publication, and participation in societies and associations including the Group Analytic Society (GAS) and Institute of Group Analysis (IGA). They also contain much material of a personal nature such as photographs, correspondence, and family history. The papers date from about the 1870s until ETF's death in 2004.

The papers in this collection comprise official documentation issued by the authorities in New Spain (specifically, in Mexico). They include the appointment of José Gracida y Bernal (1760?-1815) as one of the Protomedicatos who were in charge of medical matters in New Spain (WMS/Amer.96); three certificates issued by Protomedicatos giving individuals licence to practice medicine (WMS/Amer.51, 64 and 97); a copy of a notice suspending quarantine procedures in the city of Mexico during the fever epidemic of 1813 (WMS/Amer.3); and a order authorising payment to F.X. de Balmis (1753-1819) for work on indigenous plants in the treatment of syphilis (WMS/Amer.62).
