1. Probate copy of the will of William Batte of Shoreham, Kent, making 'my loving master John Baker' the overseer of his will, 27 Dec [1615]. Lacking letters of probate and seal.
2. Probate copy of the will of Joseph Wright of Maidstone, Kent, 'practitioner of physick', 12 May 1701. Lacking letters of probate and seal.
3. Copy of the will of John Streatfield of Maidstone, Kent, 12 Apr 1766, with a note of probate on 4 Nov 1768, 'Extracted from the registry of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. The will mentions bequests to the Charity School of Maidstone and monies to be distributed to the poor of the parished of Maidstone, Hever, Mayfield (Sussex), Tonbridge and Penshurst.
4. Copy of the will dated 11 Oct 1777, with a codicil of 28 Mar 1781, of Robert Streatfield of Burwack [Burwash], Sussex, with a note of probate on 19 Mar 1782. The will was extracted from the registry of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.

Lease, 7 Aug 1776, made by Samuel Adams, builder, to Thomas Williams, carpenter, both of the parish of St Marylebone, of property (plan included in document) on Duke Street, St Marylebone, for 96¾ years at a rent of £8 payable after the first two years, with covenants against certain trades being practiced on the premises. Includes details of leases of property between Duke Street, Bentinck Square, and Berkeley Square (giving measurements) to Adams by the trustees of Peter William Baker, son of William Baker, deceased. The trustees named were Henry W. Portman, baker, of Bryanston, Dorset; John Littlehales, of Greek Street, in the parish of St Ann, Westminster; James Clitherow, of Boston House, Hanwell; Rev. William Sellon, of the parish of St James, Clerkenwell; and James Dunne, of the parish of St Marylebone. Signed and sealed by Samuel Adams.

Papers of Robert Mylne relating to the drainage of the Fens, 1791, comprising;

1. Report, dated 26 Oct 1791 at New River Head, London, to the 'Committee of Land Owners and Others, interested in the Improvement of the Outfall of the River Ouze [at King's Lynn]', annotated, corrected and signed by Mylne. This report differs slightly from that printed in 1792 (for a copy see Goldsmiths' Library G.L. Cat. 15332); it does not, however, contain the appendix which forms pp.39-52 of the printed report.
2. 'List of Writers on the Fens', dated Nov 1791, giving 83 entries, some in pencil, from 1100-1791, mentioning books, printed reports and Acts of parliament.

Manuscript volume containing the seal tariffs decided by the French Conseil d'Etat, Mar 1703, and entitled 'Tarif des droits du Sceau arresté au Conseil'. Includes lists of offices in provincial administration and tariffs of the provincial chancelleries presidiales. A later hand has added notes of an judgement of 20 Jul 1785 concerning seal tariffs.

The published work England as seen by foreigners in the days of Elizabeth and James I, 1895 with MS corrections and annotations and a volume comprising of press cuttings, notes and letters.

Correspondence and papers of Bellot. The papers represent and illustrate the activities of Bellot's academic life as well as his personal one. There are letters to his family describing his schooldays at Bedales School up to his involvement with University College, Ibadan and his appointment to the Vice Chancellorship of the University of London.

The papers can be divided into three series: papers relating to his involvement in teaching and governance at the University of London, his personal papers that document his relationship with his fellow historians and his family; and papers created in the process of his historical research.

The official papers include case-files relating to: academic policy, University College, Ibadan, Westfield College, Senate committees, Board of Study in History at the University of London, Higher Education in Africa, and Library Policy.

His personal papers include: correspondence (1898-1968) with fellow historians (such as Albert Frederick Pollard, Thomas Frederick Tout, Robert Arthur Humphreys and J.E. Neale), members of his family, and other friends and acquaintances; family photographs; newspaper-cuttings; domestic account-books; diaries, records of his activities at Lincoln College; curriculum vitae; and travel notebooks.

The papers documenting Bellot's academic activities and historical research include: drafts, off-prints and notes for various works, including some unpublished; correspondence with his publisher, The Athlone Press; bibliographical and lecture notes; and the obligatory historical notes on areas of American History, economics and obituaries.

Manuscript volume containing an account of the respective grants in Parliament for public services in the years 1702-1705, and the money raised from those grants up to Nov 1704. The account was made due to orders by the House of Commons dated 7 Nov 1704 and 8 Nov 1705.

Miscellaneous papers, 1497-1793, collected by Aubrey John Toppin, consisting of some letters, but mostly of 18th century legal papers, notes on cases, judgements and fees.

Fragment of a manuscript of Bede's Expositio in Cantica Canticorum, containing his commentary on the Song of Songs 1, 3-7, beginning '[Quae] tanto magis amori' and ending 'te qui in custodi[enda]' (see Patrologiae cursus completus...Series (Latina) Prima (ed) J.P. Migne, XCI, 1086-92). The document was probably written in the early 12th century, but includes a few marginal notes in a 14th century hand.

Leaf, foliated 142 in a 14th century hand, from the register of the Court of Criminal Justice of the Commune of Pistoia, written by Andreas, son of the notary Johannes Thome de Aquata, as notary and 'officialis' of the Podestà, Parisanus de Parisanis de Castiniano. The sentences are dated 19 July 1337, and marginal notes by other notaries of subsequent payment of fines are dated 11 Aug 1337 and 6 Jun 1342. Includes a specimen of the notarial sign of Andreas.
The manuscript was folded to make a bifolium to act as fly-leaves for a book measuring about 302 mm x 210 mm. The fly-leaves contain the following inscriptions in the same humanist hand, probably all made on the leaf in 1563:(i) 'Hic Liber est Antonii de Ce(n)tiis et suorum amicorum. Non est amicus noster qui nostra bona tulit'. (ii) 'Hic liber est Antonii d(e) Ce(n)tiis'. (iii) [1563] 'Valeri [sic] Max(i)mo. fu sta(m)pato da Bernado de Benali in Venetia MCCCCLXXXVIII, die VIIII Novembris, che sono anni 75 de [?] fu sta(m)pato questo libro'.

Papers, 1777-1782, relating to proceedings between Sir Martin Folkes, lord of the Manor of Wells, and George Chad and others, in the Court of King's Bench, concerning the harbour at Wells, annotated throughout and with sketches in the hand of Robert Mylne (see English Reports, XCIX, 589-91, 686-8). Includes a Report to the Commissioners for the Preservation of the Harbour of Wells by John Wooler, 7 Jul 1777; estimates for repair works submitted by Stephen West, [1781]; copy of the judgment of Lord Chief Justice Mansfield, [21 Nov 1782]; a memorandum in Mynle's hand headed 'Facts and Observations on Wells Harbour', with details dating from 1663; 5 maps, one by H.A. Biedermann (no.II) and one of the Wash (no. IV). The following printed matter is also included: April 28, 1781. Mr. Mylne's Report on his Survey of the Harbour (1781); The Report of John Smeaton, Engineer, upon the State and Condition of Wells Harbour (1782); and The Reports of Mess. Hodskinson, Grundy, Hogard and Nickalls on the State and Causes of the Decay of Wells Harbour (1782).

Conveyance, dated 7 May 1418, between Thomas Ashwell and Robert Clyderhowe, both burghers of Calais, of a cottage in Hemp Street, St Mary's parish, Calais. Abuttals given. Includes the seals of Ashwell, and the Mayoralty of Calais on a parchment tag cut from a deed mentioning the following names: Robert Colton, burgher, Jacob de Rypon, probably inhabitants of Calais.

Receipt, dated 3 Nov 1647, for £6.11.0 paid by the Receiver General to Caroline Holland on behalf of Sarah Frank for 'semptrys [seamstress] workes...for the King's Children' by virtue of an order dated 21 Jul 1647. Signed by Sarah Frank.

4. Map of Blakeney channel and Cley channel, Norfolk, mounted and coloured, from Greenvile Collins, Great Britain's Coasting Pilot (1693). With an engraved inscription by Collins dedicating the map to Shovell.
5. Modern reproduction of a reduced plan of Soho Square, London, inscribed 'House of Sir Clowdisley [Shovell]'. The original plan, probably made in the 18th century, was that of 'the late Duke of Portland's estate in the neighbourhood of Soho Square'.
6. Leaf from a letter-book, with copies of 5 letters initialled 'E.K.', dated 29 Aug 1797, Dublin, to Robert Eyre at Tallow (Co. Waterford); Thomas Osbourne at Fort Charles, Kinsale (Co. Cork); Edward Mapoller at 'Killeoan(?) near Roscommon'; William Hailey at 'Fore Park(?) near Athlone'; and 'Dr. Toves(?)'. The writer had just reached Dublin from London, and intended to travel to Roscommon and Galway. The letters to Eyre and Osbourne(?) mention payments to be made to John Kelly at the Treasury in the castle at Dublin; those to Eyre and Toves(?) refer to 'Davies (who is in custody in London)'. The leaf was formerly part of a binding.
7. Fragment of a list of deeds concerning the property of Richard and Mary Chiswell at Finchingfield, Essex, written in the 18th century.
8. Printed bill for an exhibition of the picture of the battle of Lodi of 1796 by Robert Ker Porter, with a sketch of the picture and explanatory notes.

14. 'A Short Tour on the Cornish Coast', with remarks on weather and monuments, historical anecdotes, and sketches in pencil and pastels, 1879.
15. 'Voyage of the Lioness', from Scalloway, Shetland, to Foula and Fair Isle. The Lioness was commanded by Captain Robertson; the passengers were described as 'the doctor and the professor'. The journal describes the inhabitants of the islands, and birds and animals seen. Written in the early 20th century.
16. Monologue in pidgin English, probably written for entertainment, in which Kassim Ali describes his activities during the bombardment of Alexandria, his going on board the Condor, his delivery of a letter to [Ahmed] Arabi, the flight from Alexandria to Cairo, and his prevention of the explosion of the magazine in the fort of Ras-el-Jin. The account probably refers to the bombardment of Alexandria by the British fleet on 11 Jul 1882; see The Times for 22 Jul 1882, p. 5. Written in the 20th century on note-paper addressed 'Kenley, Surrey'.

Papers of Andrew Carnegie, 1913, comprise a letter to R A Rye, thanking him for a copy of 'The Libraries of London'.

Papers of Arnold Toynbee, 1878, comprise a letter to 'My dear Rector' [Mark Pattison, Rector of Lincoln College Oxford mentioning the 1853 edition of William Cobbett's Rural Rides, with notes by James Paul Cobbett. 'It is singular that the son should have caught the father's power of genuine description so perfectly. I should very much like to shew you William Cobbett's book, and, if you will allow me, I will bring it next term for you to see... I ought to say how grateful I am to Montefiore for the introduction he gave me to you...'.

Papers of C de Bylands, 1888, comprise a letter to Mr [Henry Hucks] Gibbs. 'I received this morning with thanks the book of my friend [?Willem Frederik] Rochussen [i.e. 'Studies over Geld- en Muntwezen' (1888)] and your kind letter of Saturday last, the contents of which have much interested me; so much so, that I cannot resist the temptation of sending a copy of it to Mr Rochussen ...'.

Papers of Anne Isabella Ritchie, [1912-1913], three letters and one inscribed visiting card (for Lady Ritchie and Miss Hester Ritchie). Two of the letters are addressed to H Remsen Whitehouse and the other to Colonel Rivett Carnac. No year is given on the letters, but dates of 1912-1913 seem plausible: Remsen Whitehouse met Lady Ritchie at Colonel Rivett Carnac's house, Vevey, Switzerland, in April 1912, and two of the letters are written on mourning paper, perhaps due to the death of Sir Richmond T W Ritchie in October 1912.

The collection includes a letter from Disraeli, at 10 Downing Street, London to Colonel Caulfield Pratt, S Christie Miller and Richard Rose, agreeing to allow the subscribers to pay his election expenses: 'I can only look upon it as the act of a generous and high spirited constituency, which, though I may not merit, it would be presumption to decline' (6 May 1874); privately printed circular concerning the scheme for subscription, including a printed copy of three letters and a list of subscribers (undated [May 1874]); a letter from Corry, 10 Downing Street, to Christie-Miller, regarding the subscription scheme (4 Mar 1874); letter from Corry, 10 Downing Street, to Christie-Miller, enclosing a copy of item (1) (6 May 1874); letter from Leveson-Gower, Windsor Castle, to Mrs Christie-Miller, stating the train he would be catching (16 November 1877) and a printed circular bearing the same text as the first two pages of item (2) (undated), items (1-2) bound in a volume labelled: 'The Right Hon. B. Disraeli, Prime Minister[.] Election for the County of Bucks, 1874'; the remaining items enclosed in a pocket at the front of the volume.

Letter from Samuel Smiles of 6 Granvill Park Terrace, Blackheath, London to R Harrison, Esq, 22 Jun 1860. Answering enquiries on 'the actual condition of the working classes'. 'The bulk of the writers who write for the working classes are, though very decent penny a liners, for the most part people who know nothing about them, and merely get up what will sell for the day.'

Letter from Charles George Gordon of Khartoum, [Sudan] to the Mudir [Governor] of Dongola, 22 Jun 1884. Indicating the state of affairs at Khartoum and asking for news of the relieving force. The letter appears to be more a record of a few spoken sentences than a connected message. A transcription of the Arabic into Latin script and two different translations into English are filed with the original.

Forged letter pertaining to be from William Makepeace Thackery to an unknown recipient, [1850]. 'When I said that I could do no more for you for the present I meant it literally: I never once said it as a simple excuse... When I find that your views on hard work are different I may perhaps have something to say to you. Believe me a lazy life is a curse to any man.

Written and signed in an unknown hand, as if by Thackeray.

Letter from George Meredith of Box Hill, Dorking, [Surrey] to 'Sir Reynard' [Edward Clodd], 28 May 1902. 'If you like to have the dedication [of Walter Copeland Jerrold's book on Meredith] you have only to bow your head ... But there should be no mention of you as the subject's friend, for that would overpower the appreciation ...'
