Thanking him for a testimonial sent to accompany Routh's [unsuccessful] application for the professorship of mathematics at the [Royal Military] Academy, Woolwich. [The post was given to Matthew O'Brien, previously astronomy lecturer at Woolwich.]

Papers of the Roupell family relating to property in Charlton and Woolwich, including rentals, accounts and plans. Documents relating to a distillery in Paddington and to appointment as a gaoler at Newgate appear to be unconnected to the family. It is possible that they are linked with the legal practice of Robert G. Roupell, Q.C., or G. B. Roupell.

Manuscript journals, Aug 1946-Sep 1948, of Philip Rounds, including the period while he worked for the teak merchants McGregor & Co in Toungoo, Burma (Myanmar), containing detailed daily entries including religious reflections, his preparations and journey to Burma, work and life there, and trip home via Africa, also including notes of letters sent and finances. Also includes miscellaneous inserted ephemera, some undated, including invitations, advertisements for hotels, and press cuttings.

Four letters, 1913-1920, to George Charles Williamson, author of Lady Anne Clifford, Countess of Dorset, Pembroke and Montgomery, 1590-1676: her life, letters and work (T Wilson & Son, Kendal, 1922), mainly concerning Round's opinion on the relevance of a volume containing an Elizabethan peerage to the Clifford peerage claim.

The collection, 1853-1924, contains letters to John Horace Round from various correspondents, working papers and reviews by Round. The material concerns various historical subjects.

'Prophilactique et thérapeutique'. This MS. appears to be a précis of Nicolas François Rougnon de Magny's 'Traité d'hygiène et médecine pratique', published in 1799, and to have been taken from his own MS. Produced in Besançon.

Cours de Chimie. Rédigé d'après les Leçons de Mr. Rouelle et transcrit en 1762. The half-title of Vol. I is 'Cours de Chimie. 1761'. The second volume is headed: 'Cours de Chymie rédigé d'après les Leçons de Mr. Rouelle, et transcrit en 1762. Commencé le IIe fevrier de cette présente année sur les cahiers de Mr. Vincent de Billi, venus de M. Huet par M. David qui les tenoit de M. Diderot'. At the end of the volume is a note: 'Mr. Rouelle a fini son Cours de Chymie ce 29e mai 1762 ... et il l'a commencé le 16e novembre 1761'. Produced in Paris.

Comprising exercise book entitled 'Memorandum re Dunera' addressed to the UK High Commission in Australia from the inmates of Hay Camp, Western Australia, written under the following sub-headings: 'Treatment during Voyage'; 'Searches and Confiscation'; 'Handling and Loss of Luggage' and 'Treatment of Internees by Military', 2 Dec 1940; detailed inventory of Rotholz's possessions prior to departure from Germany; travel permit describing Rotholz's place of birth and current address; two Australian shillings from Hay internment camp, Australia; a revocation of the detention order, 7 Dec 1943; correspondence on compensation for personal possessions lost en route and restitution claim from the German government; registration certificates; job references; visa applications; family correspondence; birth register extract and official documents regarding financial and residency status.

Papers of Rotherhithe Charity School, comprising vouchers, subscription lists, and financial accounts of the Treasurer and Schoolmaster.

From these documents it would appear that subscriptions were collected and the schoolmaster's accounts submitted quarterly, and the treasurer's account made up from these and other documents half-yearly. Though some of the vouchers relate to the schoolmaster's accounts, others presumably belong to treasurer's accounts no longer extant; all have been placed in quarterly bundles, since conclusive evidence on the original arrangement is lacking.

The records within this section comprise those items which do not technically belong within the United Synagogue or its member synagogues or related charities and societies. Three notebooks connected to the same Ross-on-Wye medical practice including notebook from William Edward Green’s student days, 1861, containing notes on anatomy and biochemistry, pharmaceutical formulae, notes on childbirth and notes on physiology and chemistry; general notebook of William Edward Green, the cover bearing a faded label reading "Club Prescription: Bate's Charity" and notebook of Walter Holcroft Cam, Arthur Llewellyn Baldwin Green and George Marner Lloyd, recording particular cases and noteworthy items from the medical press, 1932.

Empyrica adversus Dogmaticismum vindicata, seu de Medicina Empyrica restituenda libri tres. Author's holograph MS. A very controversial work, apparently unpublished, which must have involved extensive research into medical literature. Among the many hundreds of notes and references is an added paragraph to Note 424 of the third volume, which is dated 1766.

A substantial collection on cinema compiled by Deac Rossell, consisting of a collection of published books, pamphlets and ephemera and a collection of manuscripts. The print collection is wholly international in scope, containing predominantly post-1950 material, including many reference works, on the history of motion pictures. The collection has both diversity and depth. There are significant holdings on several topics, including animated films, documentary, studio histories, British cinema, Asian cinemas, Indian cinema, Arab cinema and black films and filmmaking of all types including African-American cinema and African national cinemas. Within these thematic groups, the few English-language histories or director studies are mostly present, sometimes backed up with substantial works in other languages; a feature of most of these themes are monographs on individual filmmakers from small publishers and/or unusual sources. There is also a group of film festival catalogues from the 1980s and 1990s, where there are often significant essays on national cinemas or current productions which have never been published in book form - such as the excellent writing on Hong Kong films and filmmakers from the elaborate catalogues published by the film festival in that city. Extensive filmographies can be found in the collection of directories and festival programmes from around the world. There are more than 850 books in total and around 1,000 pamphlets and programmes. There is a collection of posters included and also 10 manuscripts, including that of Deac Rossell’s work 'Living pictures: origins of the movies', 1996.

This collection consists of two items: an original illustrated account of life as an internee of an internment camp on Douglas, Isle of Man, 1940-1941 and an undated typescript family history by another family member. The first item comprises a series of individual sketches of camp life mostly in verse form, which have subsequently been bound together and foliated. There is a contents page, though no introduction completes the volume.

Papers of Reginald Rose-Innes comprising correspondence and diary relating to his studies in America, there is also other correspondence relating to projects and work carried out later in his life. There are a large number of notebooks relating to research carried out throughout various countries in Africa. There are reports and essays by Rose-Innes while he was a student and later article off prints and reports (some of which are co-authored), and published works by other authors. A large number of photographs also compliment the collection many of which were taken during Rose-Innes' studies in America and his research in various African countries.

Papers of Professor Michael Rose, 1975-1976, comprising photocopies of notebooks containing handwritten research notes made by Rose whilst compiling data on French industrial sociology, later published as Servants of Post-Industrial Power? Sociologie du Travail and Modern French Socio-Political Structure (Macmillan, London, 1979). The collection contains summaries of meetings and interviews with key players in French sociology, reflections on the research process, contacts and references.
