Records of the Greenhill family of the City of London, Middlesex, Surrey, Sussex and Oxfordshire, comprising deeds, legal papers, probate records and related items. They were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff in 1977.

These records were compiled or annotated by Samuel Gregory in the mid-19th century. They comprise: the "Lord Mayor's autograph book" which contains the original signature of every Lord Mayor from 1657 to the present date; notes and cuttings relating to Lord Mayors, Chamberlains, Recorders and aldermen; history and notes relating to liverymen of the Barber Surgeons Company; drawings of merchants' marks; and miscellaneous manuscript and printed items compiled by Gregory.

These papers of the Hall family of Lincoln's Inn and elsewhere mostly comprise deeds of properties in London, Wales and Hertfordshire, but also include probate records and marriage settlements.

Records of William Herbert, comprising: topographical description of London, early 19th century; collections for a history of London monasteries, early 19th century; collections for histories of livery companies, c 1830; memoir of his life, c 1772-early 19th century; history of the Boar's Head Tavern in Eastcheap, early or mid 19th century; letters addressed to him, 1828-45; collection of antiquarian notes concerning the Priory and Church of St Bartholomew the Great, West Smithfield, c 1838-1845; and memorandum relating to parish boundaries, 1830. They were catalogued at various dates by members of Guildhall Library staff.

The records comprise: transcript of the apprentice bindings book of the Barber Surgeons' Company; collectanea towards the genealogy of the Hovenden family; extracts from the parish registers of All Hallows London Wall, St Magnus the Martyr, St Mary at Hill, St Margaret Moses, St Andrew Hubbard, St Mildred Bread Street and All Saints Edmonton; copies of mural tables and ledger stones of St Michael Queenhithe; and extracts from wills relating to Hackney.

Records of the General Hydraulic Power Company Limited, 1882-1992, containing corporate and administrative records, accounting records, share details, property and legal records, personnel records, technical records and printed material for the General Hydraulic Power Company Limited and associated companies.

Records of Justice and Pattenden, solicitors, 1849-1935. Records of the firm include day books, letter books, bill books and one account book. Clients' papers include deeds relating to property, mainly in London and family and estate papers.

Records of the London Gas Light and Coke Company, 1833-1883, comprising Directors' meetings signed minutes; Shareholders' meetings signed minutes; Committee of Works, Estimates, Contracts and Buildings signed minutes; Committee of Finance signed minutes; and Committees of Works, Finance and Inspection, and General Board signed minutes.

Records of James Lock and Company including series of day books (1781-1969, with gaps) and order books (1805-1998, with gaps). There were always two order books in use at any one time, one in the shop and one in the office, and as a result the dates overlap in many volumes. There is also a series of rough order books, called waste books (1798-1819), and special order books series for ladies' hats, for hunting wear and foreign and export orders. There are product statistics for 20th century. Very few product drawings, or fabric samples are included (for samples for special orders 1995-1998 see B/LK/422).

All these series contain similar elements of information, namely the customer's name and address, description of hat ordered and the total cost.

The collection also contains financial records, including ledgers, cash books, customer accounts and bad debts which summarise outstanding payments due from customers; staff salaries (1927-1954) (B/LK/619) and R Lincoln's executors account (B/LK/254).

Records of May May and Merriman, solicitors, 1711-1948, collected by the solicitors in the course of their work, comprising deeds and legal documents relating to the following estates or families: Allpress; Bacon; Chapple; Trustees of late Henry Clark; Captain Earl; Harvey; Morgan/Gooch; Newman; Pearson Trustees; Popham; Harper; General Popham; and Richards. Documents relate to property, financial dealings, marriages, bequests, bills and share dealing.

Records of Merry and Company, saddlemakers, 1883-1951, including letter books, ledgers, account books, wages books, order books containing clients' names, notes of their requirements (whips, racing equipment, sporting gear, etc.) and many specimens of coloured silks, order book for jockeys' race caps, and correspondence.

Records of the Imperial Gas Light and Coke Company, including copy of the Bill for establishing an Imperial Gas Light and Coke company to light certain parts of the metropolis, and later Acts relating to the Company; Parliamentary papers; half yearly reports and accounts submitted by the Directors to the Shareholders; return of officer's sureties, showing officer's signature, name and address of sureties and a note on their responsibility; contracts and agreements; papers and correspondence relating to legal proceedings; minutes of Proceedings before Commissioners appointed by the Board of Trade to revise the scale of illuminating power and gas prices of the Imperial G.L.C.: and Commissioners' certificate; schedules of deeds, bonds and debentures; registers of deposits and withdrawals of various documents; sundry insurance policies relating to the company's properties; various leases, agreements, reports and other papers concerning the company's properties.

Records of the Independent Gas Light and Coke Company, including Directors' reports and statements of accounts; correspondence; certificates for the transfer of stock; notice of proposed bill for incorporating the company; minutes of evidence of the Select Committee on the company's bill; schedule of deeds and papers belonging to the company; papers relating to premises owned by the Company in Haggerston and Whitechapel; agreement between the Independent Gas Light Company and the Imperial Gas Light Company as to areas of supply; bonds and securities made by senior officials of the company; and general agreements.

Record of the Peckham Building Investment Company comprising deed of settlement, 4 May 1846, for John Tricker Conquest of Finsbury Square and Henry England of New Cross, to form joint stock company 'The Peckham Building Investment Company'. The deed records the name and business of company, names of subscribers, and of directors and officers, duration of company and mode of dissolution; with signatures and addresses of shareholders, and note of number of shares held by each.

Apart from the principal file registries, there are also series of plans, photographs, signed contracts, parliamentary papers and a collection of 'exhibits' culled from the archives of the predecessor companies by a Thames Water officer. The files relate to various subjects including water supply, water mains, property, staff, use of reservoirs, water treatment, water fittings, ceremonial openings, tenders, agreements, claims, air raid precautions, finances, maintenance and predecessor companies.

Records of the Metropolitan Water Board Chief Engineer's Department, including letter books of the Chief Engineer; personnel papers; contracts; Chief Engineer reports; volumes relating to districts of the Board (Southern District, Northern District, Kent District, New River District, Eastern District, Western District); papers relating to the Staines Reservoir Communications Works; reports on reservoirs and equipment trials. Also Registry files on a variety of subjects including accidents, burst mains, contracts, pumping stations, British Waterworks Association, chemical treatment, complaints, drownings, filtration, examination of water, hydrants, water supply, the Institution of Water Engineers, computers, mains distribution, Parliamentary bills, sewage, recreational use of reservoirs, statistics, improvement of supply and floods.

Records of Spicers, formerly undertakers, later funeral directors, 1891-1969. The records consist of business registers and journals. Although the period covered is 1891-1969, the high commmencing folio in volume one (foliating through successive volumes was common stationers' practice in the nineteenth century) suggests that there may have been an earlier volume which has not survived. Details range from the size of coffin in the first volume to comprehensive coverage of names, addresses, ages, where died, where service held, where buried or cremated, grave nos, cost etc. in the third. Also two photographs of premises.
