Records of the Porksoken Ward, City of London. The records comprise minutes and accounts, rate assessments and poll books, records of the volunteer association, rent roll and other administrative and legal papers. They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff at various dates.

Records relating to the wards of the City of London, 1617-1979. Papers relating to individual wards, including petition of inquest jury and inhabitants of Aldersgate Without regarding the boundaries of the Liberty of St Bartholomew on Cloth Fair, 1766-1789; complaint of inhabitants of Bridge Ward that their ancient rights of free wharfage through the gate in Churchyard Alley were being hindered, 1660s; report regarding the rights and privileges of the ward of Bridge Without [Southwark], 1892; extract from a lease of the Jamaica Coffee House reserving a room for the use of the Ward Inquest and the parish officers, Cornhill Ward, 1884 and correspondence with the Secretary of the Board of Ordnance about the complaint of the inquest of Tower Ward about the entrance from Tower Hill into Thames Street being stopped by a Box and Toll, 1739.

Legal papers of the Sir John Cass's Foundation, including scheme for the administration of the foundation; administrations and will of John Cass; copy of John Cass's second will; copy inventory and accounts of John Cass's goods and estates; trust deeds; trustee's petition to the Lord Chancellor regarding the school in Hackney; cases in Chancery brought against the Trustees; Charity Commissioners' reports and schemes; and grants of arms.

Various records of Sir John Cass's Foundation, including appointment of John Cass as deputy Lord Lieutenant of Tower Hamlets; grant of administration to Thomas Cass of the goods of his father John Cass; copy of inscriptions made on a cup and snuffbox presented to trustees of the charity; letter book of the London Parochial Charities; and conveyance and leases of 182-84 Edgware Road.

The records of the Foundation's estates comprise general estate records (Ms 31064-73) which include Hackney; deeds and papers of Mucking, West Tilbury and Althorne, Essex (Ms 31074-81 though the Foundation have retained earlier Althorne deeds); deeds of Wapping and Poplar Marsh (Ms 31082-3) and leases and papers of Cass School and Technical Institute premises (Ms 31084-97). There are further deeds (from 1442) and papers of the Hackney estate which remain uncatalogued at present (May 1997).

Records of the Priory of Holy Trinity, Aldgate, comprising Prior's household accounts and cartulary compiled circa 1426 containing a narrative history of the priory and copies of documents.

  The records of the Hackney estate remain uncatalogued at present, as do a large number of miscellaneous deeds and legal papers, mostly 18th century, which probably belonged to the private clients of Jeremiah Bentham, the Charity's receiver.

Minutes of the Sir John Cass's Foundation, including Board minutes, Governors' declaration books, Estate Committee minutes, and various Committee minutes. The Board minutes include an alphabetical list of children admitted and discharged, 1749-56.

Financial accounts of Sir John Cass's Foundation, including Trustee's vouchers; account books; receipt books; bill books; estate and share ledgers; general ledgers; cash and petty cash books; estate cash books; estate ledgers; and rent cash books.

Records specifically relating to the Cass School, managed by the Sir John Cass's Foundation, comprising minutes, accounts, pupil registers, hymn sheets and photographs.

Records of the parish of Saint Botolph Aldgate date from the mid 16th century, but the archive also includes muniments of title from 1279. There are churchwardens accounts from 1547, vestry minutes from 1583, and poor rate assessments, tithe rate assessments and paving rate assessments from 1738. Parish registers include baptisms, marriages, banns, burials, preachers and church services. There are also papers relating to poor relief including the workhouse.

The series of rate books listed here are for the East Smithfield and/or City parts of the parish. East Smithfield was divided for rate collection purposes into Upper and Lower Precincts (UP & LP) and the extents of these precincts are given in the catalogue entries. The Upper Precinct included some of the Tower of London liberty until 1829 when separate rate books survive for the liberty (denoted as TL). St Katharine's Precinct appears not to have been included in any rate assessments for East Smithfield, apart from the paving rate books (Ms 2537) which include a small section of the Precinct. The City part of the parish is divided into five precincts, Houndsditch (H), High Street (HS), Tower Hill (TH), Barrs (B) and Covent Garden (CG). The extents of these precincts is given in the catalogue entries. The parish of Holy Trinity Minories does not appear in rate assessments for either the City or East Smithfield parts before its union with St Botolph.

Records of Saint Katharine by the Tower Hospital, later known as the Royal College of Saint Katharine and the Royal Foundation of Saint Katharine. Records include charters and licences; rules and regulations; legal papers; minutes; correspondence and letter books; annual reports; financial accounts; registers of baptism, marriage and burial; banns books; Vestry minutes; papers regarding the manor of the hospital; papers regarding poor relief; papers of the Commissary Court of the Royal Peculiar including marriage allegations; papers regarding estates and properties including title deeds and surveys; maps and plans.

This catalogue also includes records deposited in the Library from the Valuation and Rates Department of the Corporation of the City of London in 1920. These volumes relate to rate assessments and poor law administration of the Precinct and probably reached the Corporation via the neighbouring parish of St Botolph Aldgate, to which the inhabitants of the Precinct would naturally have turned in 1825. Later Precinct books are catalogued within the archive of St Botolph Aldgate.
