'A Manuscript of Medical Reviews in a new concise and exact Collection from the Ancient and Modern Authors; distinguished ... from all former Collections by the addition of referent marginal letters shewing from what Author any sentence of paragraph is taken; and by figures referring to the prior Authors of matters and points commonly found in some modern Accounts'. The second volume has a title-page (p. 938), 'The Art of Physick. The Principles of Physick or the General Institutions and Fundamentals of that Art; delivered in its proper Method and Division. And with the modern corrections and additions'. There are several indexes, and the manuscript exhibits a very wide knowledge of 17th century medical writings. On the verso of the last leaf of Volume II is an inscription 'All my Observations and most extraordinary Medicines are posted to this Book from my Day Book and from the Doctor's Files to this Jan. 5th 1714-15.' 'And to this Aprill the 4th 1716'. 'And to this February the 4th 1717-18'. The latest date found is 31 July 1719 in an added note on p. 764. 'William Chalk, 152 Grosvenor Street Camberwell' is faintly written in pencil inside the upper cover of Volume II. He has also made a calculation of dates, based on the year 1844 beneath the author's dates as given above. Produced in Watford?

Notes taken from John Abernethy's lectures and a collection of correspondence and other papers relating to Abernethy, 1808-[1820].

Records of the Abortion Law Reform Association, its officers, and individuals connected with the attempt to reform the abortion laws, plus various associated materials. The administrative records of the ALRA c 1935-1978, include papers of Chairman Janet Chance, and, following the passing of 1967 Act making abortion legal, papers of the 'Lane' Committee on Working of the Aberdeen Act and Abortion Amendment Bills.

'Abyssum duplicatum cum Hyrogliphis', illustrated by a few pen-drawings of alchemical apparatus, and 14 water-colour symbolic figures from the 'Viridarium chymicum' of Daniel Stolcius, published at Frankfurt in 1624. The contents of Volume I seem to be a transcript of Anton Joseph Kirchweger's 'Aurea catena Homeri', the title of which, beginning 'Eine Beschreibung von dem Ursprung der Natur [etc.]', is found on the third leaf. This work was first published at Leipzig in 1723 [cf. Ferguson, 'Bibliotheca Chemica', Volume I, pp. 469-471]. The second volume is concerned with the 'Introitus apertus ad occlusum regis palatium' by Eirenaeus Philaletha [cf. Ferguson op. cit. Vol. II, pp. 190-194], and it is noted that the German translation of this work published at Hamburg in 1705 has the title beginning 'Abyssus Alchymiae exploratus'.

Papers of the Ackland and Littlewood families, 1809-1970. The items in this collection can broadly be categorised as follows: day-books and a diary recording visits to patients and medicines prescribed; patient accounts ledgers; apprenticeship indentures of William Ackland; recipe books and medical notebooks; casebook, medical notes and correspondence of Charles Kingsley Ackland; memoirs, correspondence, photographs, diplomas and miscellaneous papers of the Ackland family.

The collection comprises medical notes and associated personal material. MSS.835-853 comprise notes by Acland on scientific and medical subjects, spanning the period from his schooldays to the First World War. MSS.3652-3653 are Acland's notes of clinical lectures given in 1876-1877 at St. Thomas's Hospital by Charles Murchison (1830-1879). MSS.5798-5800 comprise loose papers: letters, wall-charts and diplomas.

Papers of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH). The genesis of ASH is illustrated in Fletcher's papers (section Q), arising out of his work on the Royal College of Physicians smoking reports. There is a full run of Committee minutes from 1971 onwards (section B). The bulk of the files are those of the Director, associated with all aspects of ASH's campaigning and administrative work. These overlap to some extent with the files of the Project Officer (section P), which are concerned with various specific campaigns, especially about smoking in the workplace and in public places. Published papers, leaflets, posters and booklets are to be found in files throughout the archive, but section T consists of publications which were filed together, apparently transferred from the ASH library.

Papers reflecting the many different areas of Robina Addis's life and work, including her training and research; her involvement with both British and international societies and associations in the mental health field; visits abroad; lecturing, teaching and writing. After her official retirement she continued her involvement with the National Association for Mental Health, but was also able to extend her interests by working for the Save the Children Fund and other organisations, and these activities are also reflected in the collection.

There are, however, many gaps in the papers. While RSA's early training and research are covered, her work in child guidance in the prewar and Second World War periods are represented mainly by lecture notes and publications. Her long career in the NAMH is chronologically well covered from 1950 onwards, but the quantity of material is not great and it can be assumed that most of the papers were retained in the Association's internal filing system. With certain exceptions most of the papers representing RSA's other activities date only from the 1960s onwards and it is impossible to say what proportion of the total survives. The sequences of lecture notes and publications, do, however, seem to be fairly comprehensive.

Files produced by, and sent to, the AIDS and Social Policy Group of the Family Planning Association in the 1980s and early 1990s. The collection contains correspondence, press releases, minutes of meetings and studies on AIDS.

Papers on medical mycology 1950-1964, including records of the informal meetings of the Medical Research Council Medical Mycology Committee and the Industrial Epidermophytosis (Miners' Foot Ringworm) Committee.

Volumes entitled, "B.S. Albini dictata in Physiologiam", probably a set of manuscript lecture notes used by George Paterson. Each volume has an engraved title-page dated 'Joh. Le Mair. 1755' with the MS. title written in on the centre panel.

One notebook on practical chemical analysis while at St Hilda's School Cheltenham, notebooks of lectures and courses while a student at London School of Medicine for Women, notes of cases seen while medical student, some later notebooks on matters of medical and surgical interest, and accounting lectures, diploma from the Comité Britannique de la Croix Rouge Française for service to France during the First World War, resolution from the Medical Women's Federation congratulating her on being made a Dame of the British Empire.

Correspondence and papers of Alexander von Humboldt relating to his many scientific interests, publications, and professional and social life. Most of the letters are written to French men of science, publishers, officials and others, with a smaller number to German, British and other correspondents.

Alphabeta litterae, caracteres et habitus variorum populorum, besides the alphabets, there are numerous traced copies of illustrations-a few in colour-from travel books, etc of the 16th to the early 19th centuries, depicting costumes, ceremonies, occupations, etc. The fourth volume, uniformly bound, is lettered on the spine: 'Salutatio angelica. Symbolum Apostolorum Nicenum S. Athanasii. Decalogus. Praecepta Ecclesiae. Te Deum laudamus. Signum S. Crucis. Orationis Dominicae. Fragmenta polyglotta'. Probably compiled in France: the latest entry is dated 1840.

The three volumes, which are paged continuously from 1 to 1497 are throughout written in the autograph of Charles Alston (1683-1760), Professor of Botany from 1720-1760. The heading is "Lectures on the Materia Medica. Begun in November 1720 and since several times revised, corrected and enlarg'd. By C. A." Wide margins have been left throughout, in which later additions have been inserted. The latest date is 1754.

WMS/Amer.94 comprises documents relating to Andrade y Pastor, the majority by other hands: certificates of qualification, licences to carry firearms, bills for anatomical equipment and medical books, letters of appointment, an account of a medical case in which Andrade y Pastor took part, and official correspondence between him and other members of the faculty. WMS/Amer.136 consists of biographical drafts dating from shortly after Andrade y Pastor's death, by an unknown individual.

Copy of article by Morris Greenberg, 1982, concerning evidence given by Dr Hubert Montague Murray, MD, FRCP (1855-1907), to the Departmental Committee on Compensation for Industrial Diseases, which contained the first described case of asbestosis; framed asbestosis swabs, 1899, with extracts from correspondence, 1954 and 1966.

The first book of horses and the Second book of horses contributed to by a number of different grooms, huntsmen, farriers, etc., but predominately in the hand of Eusebius Ashby.

Papers of Norman Ashton, 1924-1998, including correspondence relating to Ashton's research activities, his acceptance of numerous honours and awards, his duties whilst member of many socieities and institutes, and his activities whilst in various professional posts. Some correspondence from his childhood and teenage years is also included.

Also relating to Ashton's research activities are details of experiments, photographs, reports on findings, and copies of lectures and articles. Many unpublished speeches given at the events of various societies and institutes can also be found.

The collection includes Ashton's practical notebooks from his time as a student at Kings College London, and ephemera relating to his social pursuits in his early years, such as programmes for performances he was involved in, photographs, and illustrations. Also amongst the papers are Ashton's unpublished memoirs, which cover his life from 1913 to 1995.

Papers of the Association for Research into Restricted Growth, 1964-1988, now called the Restricted Growth Association, comprising administrative records, 1970-c 1988; records relating to the Association's links with other organisations, 1976-1987; publications; general correspondence, 1969-1987; correspondence concerning individual cases, 1972-1986; and biographical material relating to Dr William Geoffrey Shakespeare.

Minute books of the Council and Executive Committee of the Association for the Advancement of Medicine by Research, with inserted loose papers, from its formation in 1882 until 1892; minutes of the sub-committee on the Promotion of Research, 1882-1883, and letters to Stephen Paget, 1891-1892.

Agendas and notes (as opposed to formal minutes) of meetings of the Association of Area Medical Officers of Health, anda number of papers circulated to members in connection with meetings. The earlier items (1974-1976) are all xerox copies, as no set of signed minutes was kept; but from 1977 onwards the agendas and notes of meetings (though not all of the circulated papers) are the typed top copies.

Volumes of minutes containing annual alphabetical indexes of ophthalmologists who joined the Association of British Ophthalmologists, together with subject indexes.

These records contain material dealing with all aspects of County Medical Officers' work. The broad categories are: minutes, 1902-1907 and 1918-1974; correspondence, 1939-1974; plus a few photographs and miscellaneous items, 1905-1972.

Among the papers are several boxes of records generated by Dr Ramage's role as Association of County Medical Officers of Health representative on the Public Health and Housing (subsequently Health and Welfare) Committee of the County Councils Association. These consist of minutes and other circulated papers and subject files of correspondence, etc. As these records are not duplicated in the holdings of the Association of County Councils (formerly the County Councils Association) they have been retained as of considerable interest on local government health matters.

The collection covers material relating to activities of the Association of District Community Physicians from its inception to 1980. They include minutes, lists of members, newsletters and subject files. Many files relate to the role of the District Community Physician in the reorganised NHS. The final year of its existence is not covered; however, some information may be found in the papers of the Society of Medical Officers of Health (SA/SMO) and Association of Area Medical Officers of Health (SA/AMO).

Papers of the Association of Health and Residential Care Officers including minutes, yearbooks, and files on conferences and on general organisational matters. Minutes of the entire organisation survive only from 1915 and there is a large gap for the period 1933-1946, although there are earlier minutes from No 2 and No 4 Inspection Districts. Files relating to the organisation of, and proceedings at, Annual Conferences only go back to 1961.

Notes taken from the lectures by Jean Astruc (and occasionally other figures), produced in Paris or Montpellier, 1723-1761.

Two draft copies of Recherches statistiques sur l'aliénation mentale faites à l'Hospice de Bicêtre by Honoré Aubanel and Ange Marie Thore. The first draft has a title as given above, the second is entitled 'Recherches statistiques sur la Division des Aliénés de Bicêtre pendant l'année 1839. Travail présenté au Concours ouvert par MM. les Rédacteurs des "Annales d'Hygiène" ', 31 Dec 1839.

These papers comprise the manuscript collection of F[rederick] Bacon Frank (1827-1911). They include a medieval medical miscellany (MS.550), material by or relating to the 17th century Yorkshire physician Nathaniel Johnston (MSS.3083-3086 and 6080), and some Bacon family administrative documents (MS.6079). One item relating to Nathaniel Johnston that did not form part of the Bacon Frank collection has been catalogued with it for convenience (MS.3086).

Transcripts, extracts, and notes on alchemy, entitled 'MSS. on alchemy received from H[enry] C[owell] Boyes 1894.'

The records cover the period 1976-1993, although the majority of the records date from 1985-1993. Many sections of the archive are complete - minutes of the Executive Committee, 1985-1993; annual reports, 1986-1993 and newsletters, 1986-1993. The archive also contains a great deal of information relating to other cancer organisations, both in this country and abroad.

Journal and account book of Thomas Baker comprising journal of a visit to Paris containing narratives of visits to the Surgeons' College of Saint-Côme, and to the hospitals of Les Invalides, L'Hôtel-Dieu, and La Charité. At the latter Baker witnessed operations for fistula in ano and facial abscess by Sauveur François Morand (1697-1733), whose collection on the pathology of bones he also inspected and account book containing accounts of his income and expenditure. Included are accounts of annual income from surgery and bleeding, and from named apprentices, dressers and surgical pupils at St Thomas' Hospital, London, where Baker held the post of Surgeon from 1739. On ff. 1, 2, 40, 41 and on the end-papers are notes by Baker and others on his family and on surgeons at St Thomas' Hospital, 1703-1768.
