Records of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, 1760-2002. The archive is central to the history of the modern Jewish community in Britain. It covers virtually every facet of Jewish life in Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - assimiliation, education, political emancipation, Shechita, anti-Semitism. The archive is particularly interesting on the conditions of Jewry outside the UK - there is a lot of information, for example, on the rise of fascism in mainland Europe in the 1930s and the Holocaust.

Records of the Central British Fund for World Jewish Relief, predecessor organisations and associated organisations. The archive details the work of the Fund in shelters, hostels, internment camps, schools and foster homes.

Correspondence of Chief Rabbi Nathan Adler, 1868-1901. A small number of records survive from around 1868 for the Chief Rabbinate of Nathan Adler and more from the late 1870s onwards - around the time Hermann Adler began to undertake many of his father's duties for him. The records consist of bundles of letters to the Chief Rabbi from communal organisations and individuals in Britain and overseas.

Minutes and Documents of the Cabinet Meetings of President Eisenhower, 1953-1961 is a themed microfilm collection which includes copies of the minutes, memoranda, and supporting documents of the Cabinet meetings during the Presidential administration of Dwight David Eisenhower, 12 Dec 1952-13 Jan 1961. The meetings included discussions relating to all aspects of the domestic and foreign policy affairs of the United States. Instructions for the Guidance of the Captains and Commanding Officers of Her Majesty's Ships of War employed in The Suppression of the Slave Trade (2 volumes, HMSO, 1892). Volume One includes general instructions for visiting, searching and detaining vessels, sending to port of adjudication, sheltering fugitive slaves, filling in forms and certificates, dealing with British vessels, vessels of no name or nation, vessels from West African states, and vessels covered by the General Act of the Brussels Conference. Papers of the London Branch of the Anti Apartheid Movement. The records are wide ranging and include minutes, reports, memoranda and correspondence, as well as publications and more ephemeral material documenting the many events and demonstrations organised by the movement. Although the collection relates specifically to the local and regional groups for the London area, the papers are equally concerned with the wider business of the movement, at both the national and international levels. Records of the Annual General Meetings, the National Committee and the Executive Committee are held as well as material from the London Committee and papers of local anti apartheid groups. The papers of David Kenvyn, chairperson of the London Committee and secretary of Redbridge Apartheid Group, reflect the regional and local activities of the movement, while papers from related organisations illustrate the extent to which the movement worked in partnership with other bodies.

Personal papers of Millie Miller, Member of Parliament. The collection consists mostly of official parliamentary incoming and outgoing correspondence when Miller held office as MP for Ilford North. There are also maps, plans, brochures, and newspaper cuttings relating to housing in Stoke Newington from the 1930s, and during the late 1950s when Miller chaired the Housing Committee. The correspondence files are varied. Letters include those from; interest groups, including the International Planned Parenthood Federation, the Socialist Medical Association, the Married Women's Association, the Association of Jewish Women's Organisations in the UK, and National Council of Women of Great Britain; local authorities, including Camden and Redbridge Borough Councils and Waltham Forest Area Health Authority; businesses local to the Ilford North constituency, including Thorn Electrical Industries Limited; Ilford North constituents; and letters from other MPs and Ministers.

The material reflects Millie Miller's keen interest in the promotion of women's rights, her membership on various committees and councils, delivery of speeches to women's associations, and her campaigns against girl slavery in the sex industry, battered wives, and sex discrimination. The material also details Miller's involvement in the World Conference of International Women's Year 1975. The correspondence touches on the Government's relations with Israel and the difficulties facing ethnic minorities, particularly Jewish communities. A large proportion of letters relate to Miller's constituency in Ilford North, Redbridge LB, with particular reference to housing, immigrants, and the views of constituents on local and national issues.

This collection contains outgoing correspondence, diaries, reports, and speeches made by Sir Peter Newsam as the Education Officer of the ILEA. The material makes special reference to the development of policies in the ILEA aimed at improving education provision for ethnic minorities, reponses to the Brixton riots, and the effects of falling school rolls and secondary school reorganisations in inner London.

The records also include policy files kept by Sir Ashley Bramall, Leader of the ILEA, on teachers' pay and the William Tyndale School Inquiry.

Records of Friends of Bogle, support group for Bogle-L'Ouverture publishing house. The minutes and agendas in LMA/4462/H/01/002 include fundraising projects such as a fun walk, funds for medical expenses for a young man from Yemen, the Walter Rodney Memorial speech by Manning Marable, 17/01/1986 minutes discuss the setting up of a constitution for Friends of Bogle. Setting up of the suplementary school, launch of the record 'Come From That Window Child' (19/07/1986 minutes), Setting up of the Saturday school at Ealing Technical College (31/10/1986).

The 'Walter Rodney Visions of Africa 1986' lecture was given by 'Ama Ata Aidoo. Contributors to the event included Mendy Joseph, Keith Waithe, Accabre Huntley, Alan Cooper, Eintou Springer and Margret and Sheila Thomas (LMA/4462/F/02/017).

Records of the Bookshop Joint Action Committee, including correspondence between bookshops and to the Home Office; witness statements of attacks on the Bogle-L'Ouverture bookshop and notes written at the time of the incidents; letters of support from organisations and bookshops in Britain, America and the Caribbean; press cuttings and magazine articles about the events; letters, stickers and publicity materials sent to or left on shops by the National Front and the Ku Klux Klan (LMA/4462/J/01/009), and copies of photographs of damage done to the bookshops.

'Fourth Idea Bookshop' set up the 'Fascist Information Centre' to collect information about the attacks and to create a fund to assist the shops involved. A questionnaire was distributed to collate materials for a report and photocopies of documents are contained in the series. They aimed to compile a dossier of attacks and to start a security fund to assist with damage to bookshops.

Copy of a sworn statement by Philip Perceval Graves, former correspondent of The Times on The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, 24 Oct 1934, addressed to a court in Berne, Switzerland. The statement confirms that the content of a pamphlet entitled 'The Truth about the 'Protocols'- a Literary Forgery' by Graves, published in The Times, Aug 1921, is true.

Copies of the papers of Maria Nermi-Egounoff, opera singer, 1938-1990, including Nermi-Egounoff's cv, replete with press cuttings of reviews of her work; short biographies of British residents of Hungarian extraction who were anti-Semitic; newspaper articles and biographical notes.

Copies of correspondence, 26 Apr 1946-21 Nov 1988, mostly from Hermann Maas, a German protestant minister, to Paul and Martha Rosenzweig, two siblings, Jewish 'Mischlinge' emigrés, whom Maas helped to save from the Nazis.

Papers of Max Sander, 1915-1939, comprise his personal papers and notably include his World War One Military Pass which provides details of his army record (927/2); his Jewish identity card (927/8) and his Aliens Registration card (927/9).

Letter seeking advice regarding behaviour, c 1931, comprises a letter addressed to the leadership of the 'NSDAP', Muenchen Braunes Haus, with response from R L Uschla, requesting advice on how to conduct oneself with a Jew.

Theresienstadt poems collection, 1938, comprise typescript poems written by inmates of Theresienstadt, including Leo Strauss, Myra Strauss Gruhenberg, Mara, Otto Pam, Koppel and Fritz Pollak.

Papers concerning antisemitic measures in Nazi Germany, 1938, comprising a typescript copy of an order given by Hermann Wilhelm Goering outlining Adolf Hitler's decisions concerning Jews and their property and residence; including use of dining cars and sleepers on trains; ban from entry to certain hotels and restaurants; pensions and mixed marriages. The collection includes an English translation.

French Anti-Nazi leaflet, 1938, entitled 'Et Voici La Preuve', which disclaims the thesis that the Kristallnacht pogrom was a spontaneous, popular, outpouring of anger. The leaflet incorporates a facsimile of a document from the Kriminalpolizei, Vienna, headed 'Judenaktion' in which it is made obvious that Kristallnacht was organised from above.

Papers of the Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens, 1903-1938, relate to the central organisation including the constitution and notably comprise management and committee minutes, reports and plans regarding the organisation's aims and objectives and finance records; files on the activities of the state and regional level sub-groups; files concerning women's organisations, youth organisations, members and officers, publication and propaganda, activities of other Jewish organisations, Zionism, emigration to Palestine, training for Jewish youth, Anti-Semitism, political, economic and legal situation for Jews in Germany, CV's relationship to religion and religious organisations, and the attitudes of writers and politicians to Jews.

World Jewish Congress Central files on microfilm, 1919-1976, comprising Sub-series 1: Organisational History and Activities, 1919-1970, includes correspondence, minutes and publications and reports related to the organisational and political activities of the WJC and its forerunner, the Committee of Jewish Delegations. Reports on the history and activities of the WJC from before its inception through to the 1960s are also included in this sub-series. Significant subjects covered include anti-Semitism, relief for refugees, and relations with the League of Nations. More material dealing with WJC activities in Europe during the 1930s can be found in Sub-series 2 under the Stephen S. Wise/Lillie Shultz and Nahum Goldmann papers, and under Pre-WJC Conferences and the First Plenary Assembly (1936) in Sub-series 3.

Sub-series 2. Executive Correspondence and Project Files, 1920, 1931-1975, includes records and reports from the files of WJC presidents (Stephen S. Wise, Nahum Goldmann); chairmen of the Executive Committee (Nahum Goldmann, Israel Goldstein); followed by the administrative/executive directors of the New York office (Abraham S. Hyman, Monty Jacobs, Yehuda Ebstein, Greta Beigel). The sub-series contains general correspondence arranged chronologically, individual and departmental correspondence, country files, subject files, speeches, and publications.

Sub-series 3: Plenary Assemblies, pre-1936 conferences, and special conferences, 1932-1975, contains minutes, proceedings, reports, and other materials dealing with three pre-WJC conferences together with extensive files for the first six WJC Plenary Assemblies (1936-1975). Also included are materials pertaining to the War Emergency Conference (1944) and the Inter-American Jewish Conference (1941).

Sub-series 4: Committees, 1940-1976, consists of 33 boxes in its original format. This sub-series contains materials pertaining to committee meetings (Office, Administrative, Executive). The Executive Committee files include material from the South American, European, and Israeli Branches of the Executive. Within the files for each committee/branch, materials are arranged chronologically.

Papers of Robert Birley, 1924-1981, relating to his writing and speaking activities in the fields of education, including post-World War Two educational reconstruction in the British Zone of Germany; English universities in South Africa and apartheid; human rights issues. The papers comprise letters, manuscripts, typescripts of speeches and articles, related printed material, presscuttings and reprints of articles.

Material created by the University of East London's MA in Gender, Ethnicity and Sexuality to support study, from [1990] to the time of writing, comprising: a series of folders containing academic papers related to gender, ethnicity and sexuality arranged alphabetically by the surname of the author; printed books, articles, periodicals, journals, course materials, statistics, newssheets, conference materials, academic papers and press cuttings. Memoir dictated by Philip Qipu Vundla, trade unionist and political activist in South Africa, 1958: covering his childhood and family background and details on South African politics, trade unions and moral rearmament, 1901-1958; including account of strike by African mineworkers in 1946, the tram boycott in the native townships of Johannesburg, in 1948, a demonstration by African teachers for higher wages and better working conditions, the School Boycott and protests against the Bantu Education Act, 1953-1955, and the bus boycott by Africans in Johannesburg in 1957.

Papers relating to student unrest at the University of Transkei (UNITRA), South Africa, 1984, triggered by the questioning of four students, and the detention of two others by security police; this led to the boycotting of classes and closures of the campus. Many students were arrested and detained, several members of the Students' Representative Council were suspended by the University and four members of staff were deported from Tramnskei. The papers include documents produced by the Principal and other members of the University administration and the Students' Representative Council, during the period of unrest; legal papers concerning court action brought by suspended students; submissions to the ensuing Commission of Enquiry; and news cuttings relating to student unrest, 1980-1984.
