Papers of Maurice Pappworth comprising writings, notes, articles, correspondence, draft chapters, and photographs, 1960s-1990s. Subjects include material relating to his concern in ethical issues arising from experiments on humans, Section C, to Section D on organ transplants and brain death as well as Jewish medical ethics, 1964-1994. It is interesting to note the reactions that Human Guinea Pigs stirred up within the medical profession in Section C, 1958-1991. With regards to not being elected a Fellow of the RCP, Section E highlights how other doctors were appalled at the length it took for him to be elected (see letters of congratulations), 1961-1993.

Two letters from Karl Marx to (Christian Johann) Heinrich Heine, written in Brussels in Mar 1845 and Apr 1846, the first requesting material from Heine for a radical periodical published by one of his friends [possibly the Deutsch-französische Jahrbücher (German-French Yearbooks) for which Marx was co-editor at that time], and the second concerning Heine's book on Ludwig Börne, the leader of the German radicals in Paris (Ludwig Börne, eine Denkschrift, written in 1840).

This collection is divided into two sections. Section one contains material on capital punishment and the death penalty, against which Hewitt campaigned. Section two covers material concerned with obscene publications and other forms of media, including censorship, Obscene Publications Acts and other allied topics. The papers contain many printed examples of C H Rolph's articles and materials by organisation such as the Howard League for Penal Reform and the National League for the Abolition of the Death Penalty. Infamous legal cases such as the obscenity trials in the 1960s relating to 'Oz' magazine and Hubert Selby's novel 'Last Exit to Brooklyn' are discussed.

Papers of noted Jungian analyst Michael Fordham, with some papers of his second wife, Frieda Fordham, formerly Hoyle, also an analytical psychotherapist. They include his correspondence with C. G. Jung over a period of several decades and files relating to his work as co-editor of of Jung's published Collected Works, material on the Society of Analytical Psychology (of which Michael Fordham was one of the founders), correspondence with colleagues,and files relating to the infant observation courses at the Tavistock Clinic with which Michael Fordham became involved in later life. Papers of Bernhard Reichenbach, 1953-1974, document the post-war journalistic and broadcasting activities of Reichenbach, former actor, political party official, journalist and refugee from Nazi Germany.

The papers consist largely of annotated drafts of broadcast transcripts, produced for the German radio station, Süddeutscher Rundfunk. They cover a wide range of subjects providing, for the German audience, an insight into the economic, social and political life of Britain, 1963-1974. Also included are book reviews and correspondence.

Papers of Peter Hennessy relating to his work as a journalist, writer and academic, c 1970-2000, including research notes on modern political history with extracts from articles and Government minutes and reports; notes for talks and lectures at Queen Mary College and for the radio; audio and video tapes of interviews with politicians and political figures, c 1970-1985; notes and transcripts of interviews, c 1970-1986; press cuttings, c 1980-2000 and correspondence, c 1970-2000.

Personal papers and working papers of Andrew Roth (1919-2010), including: Naval records and discharge papers, c 1941-1945; copies of his regular family newsletter of the late 1940s titled The Gripes of Roth, and other personal correspondence to family and friends; detailed business correspondence between Roth and the multiple agencies, syndicates and publications he wrote for during his travels in Europe and the Far East covering topics such as publication of articles, payments and contractual arrangements, c 1945-1960; copies and draft versions of Roth’s articles and publications, concerning predominantly political and economic subjects related to the Far East and America, and the rise of Communism in Asia; photographs from Roth’s travels around Europe and Asia, [1946-1950].

The collection comprises papers relating to training courses and workshops run by the CJA for journalists in Africa, the Pacific, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malta, Malaysia, Cyprus, Belize, Hong Kong and the Caribbean with supporting correspondence with various organisations including the Commonwealth Secretariat, The Commonwealth Relations Trust, The Commonwealth Foundation, The Thomson Foundation, the University of Western Ontario and the Commonwealth Press Union including details of arrangements for courses and instructors and requests for funding and video and audiotapes tapes featuring conferences, a sub-editors course and a skills updating course; correspondence with organisations such as The Commonwealth Foundation and the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative and general correspondence regarding issues such as fundraising, operational costs, Commonwealth Foundation and Nuffield Press fellowships, freedom of the press and the withdrawal of government funding for the Commonwealth Institute; conference papers including speeches, transcriptions of audiotapes, records of sessions and arrangements for travel, accommodation and expenses; minutes and agenda for meetings of the Executive Committee, the London Management Committee, the Training Committee, the Steering Committee, the Finance and Membership Committee and various conference committees; membership correspondence, application forms and subscription details (SOME OF THESE RECORDS ARE CLOSED); the CJA "Newsletter" including correspondence and articles for inclusion; information about the formation of an organisation for Commonwealth journalists and correspondence regarding travel bursaries awarded by the Commonwealth Relations Trust and the CJA.

Working papers and correspondence of Sir Francis (Franz) Eugene Simon. Scientific notebooks in the collection date from 1919-1934, largely the period of Simon's researches on low temperature physics at the Physikalisch-Chemisches Institut of Berlin University, and subsequently at Breslau. Other notes and manuscripts for lectures and articles are post 1930, while a large group of correspondence files are from the years 1922-1956, providing a full account of Simon's dealings with many fellow scientists and scientific organisations. Individual letter files concern V.M. Goldsmidt, Max Born, Gwyn Owain Jones and Nevill Mott among many other notable figures. Details of Simon's involvement in atomic energy development are to be found in papers on uranium isotope separation (MAUD Committee notes) and UK Atomic Energy Authority correspondence. Simon's professional appointments as head of the Clarendon Laboratory and as science correspondent to the Financial Times are represented by substantial groups of letters. There are twelve notebooks with some associated papers; the series also includes files of lectures, articles, cuttings and souvenirs, including photographs, with files of correspondence. Two later additions to the collection consist of correspondence and files highlighting Simon's contacts with industrial firms, universities and international organisations.

Notebooks of Sir Gerald Barry, record conversations with Carl Goerdeler (a member of the German opposition to Hitler) and notes on British politics before and after World War Two; correspondence concerning editorial responsibilities at the 'News Chronicle'; texts of wartime broadcasts; diaries of Sir Gerald Barry's visits to France, Greece, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland and the United States of America; a small section on the Festival of Britain consisting of a file of correspondence on the setting up of an International Design Centre and a file of correspondence on the redevelopment of Crystal Palace; one file of correspondence on censorship reform; and articles and speeches by Sir Gerald Barry and notes and drafts for his autobiography.

Accounts of League of Nations conferences and tours in the Balkans and Eastern Europe, including a photograph album of the tour of the Balkans.

The majority of this collection consists of letters to Gardiner, written mainly when he was editor of the Daily News. There are also press cuttings on subjects of interest to Gardiner, including Sir William Harcourt and Lloyd George, and press cuttings of Gardiner's own journalism.

The Hetherington collection consists predominantly of a series of notes of interviews with political figures from Britain and overseas kept between November 1958 and July 1975. Rough notes were made after the interviews which were later sent for typing; where a lengthy delay intervened prior to typing this is indicated. Frequent accounts are given of meetings with Labour leaders from Hugh Gaitskell to James Callaghan and there were regular meetings with Jo Grimond, leader of the Liberal Party, in the early years. Regional development and the Scottish government are frequent themes throughout the British interviews and there are discussions of the spy scandals of the early 1960s and the industrial disputes of the early 1970s. Foreign affairs figure strongly including Rhodesia's declaration of UDI, the independence of African states, the Vietnam War and the pursuit of a settlement in the Middle East. Britain's negotiations towards entry into the EEC can be traced. The section 'Additional Papers' contains notes on an attempted merger of The Times and the Guardian in 1967.
