Copies of correspondence to and from Julius Kühl, 1935-1982, chiefly relating to the plight of Jews in Nazi occupied Europe. Many organisations and individuals are represented notably the The Hilfsverein für jüdische Flüchtlinge im Shanghai (Aid organisation for Jewish refugees in Shanghai)(HIJEFS) although several other Jewish refugee organisations are also represented, namely Agudas Jisroel, Schweizerischer Israelitischer Gemeindebund and Va'ad Hahatsala. The majority deal with the fate of Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe. In particular they document attempts to rescue individuals, families and larger groups by channelling funds and securing visas for that purpose. The provision of food parcels to concentration camp inmates is also reported. In addition the tensions which sometimes arose between the different refugee organisations are reflected here.

Wartime Translations of Seized Japanese Documents: Allied Translator and Interpreter Section Reports, 1942-1946 is a themed microfiche collection of 7,200 translated Japanese documents. The collection includes translated seized Japanese diaires, Allied interrogation reports of Japanese soldiers and civilians, Japanese reconnaissance reports, US summaries of enemy activities, and Allied tactical and strategic reports on Japanese military movements issued by Allied General Headquarters, Southwest Pacific Area (GHQ SWPA), and Advanced Echelons of the Australian New Guinea Force; US 6 Army; US 1 Corps; US 11 Corps; US 10 Corps; US 8 Army; US 14 Army; 1 Australian Corps; and US 24 Corps. Included are all documents bearing the notation 'Allied Translator and Interpreter Section, Southwest Pacific Area' and issued during the period 1942-1946. As noted above, the Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) was re-organised after the terms of Japanese surrender were signed on 2 Sep 1945, and its mission was altered to reflect the needs of the Supreme Command, Allied Powers (SCAP), occupation force. During its transition to a service within SCAP, ATIS continued to issue documents under the aegis of General Headquarters, Southwest Pacific Area (GHQ SWPA) and these documents are included in the collection. Major subjects covered in ATIS documents are Japanese military strategy and tactics; specific intelligence on Japanese troop movements, equipment, and order of battle; indigenous political movements and political geography of the Southwest Pacific; technical data on Japanese military equipment; and, information obtained from Japanese prisoners of war. Papers concerning conditions in Europe for Jews, 1940-1946, comprise a typescript copy of a diary written by a Jewish refugee from Berlin, describing life in Belgium during the occupation, 1944; copies of extracts from Luxemburg newspapers regarding press freedom; postcard of the Luxemburg Synagogue, which was burned down in 1940, 1940-[1945] and many typescript reports concerning conditions for Jews, notably including a report on the effect of the ceasefire agreement between Germany and France on people in the French camps and also on Jews in the occupied and unoccupied zones of France.

Papers of Robert Birley, 1924-1981, relating to his writing and speaking activities in the fields of education, including post-World War Two educational reconstruction in the British Zone of Germany; English universities in South Africa and apartheid; human rights issues. Papers of Gurs and other French concentration camps, 1940-1941, include reports and correspondence relating to conditions in Gurs and other French concentration camps, many from former inmates. Reports notably include 'Reports from occupied and unoccupied France' (WL1072/5) and '4000 in Not taube Hilfsorganisationen' (WL1072/11), describing conditions in Saint-Cyprien internment camp and correspondence includes a copy letter from the Archbishop of Toulouse, Jules Saliege (1072/9), and letters from inmates.

Report of transport of Jews from Düsseldorf to Minsk, 1941, comprises a certified copy of a report about the transport of Jews from Düsseldorf to Minsk, including Jews from Essen and Wuppertal, by Hauptmann der Schutzpolizei, Meurin. The report has the following sub-headings: description of the transport; description of the city and ghetto of Minsk; Russian POWs; return (to Düsseldorf) of the Transportkommando and recommendations.

Letters from friends and family to Siegfried Grossbard, 1922-1962, on topics including the Richborough Internment Camp and the German Jewish Aid Committee; reference to Lingfield Internment camp and of experiences as an internee in Australia; brother-in-law, Erwin's account of survival of the occupation in France; conditions in Germany during the immediate postwar era, from ex-internee, Roger Freeman; claims for restitution relating to the Aryanisation of the Grossbard family business; and letters from Otto Morawetz to Grossbard regarding family and friends and life in the USA.

Papers of Janina Fischler-Martinho, comprise a personal account of her life in the Cracow ghetto during World War Two, probably written in the post-war period, in which she recounts a story about a silver spoon which she discovered on a return visit to Cracow, and which was donated to the Jewish Museum in Camden Town, London.

Papers of Political Warfare Executive, 1943, comprise two copies of the French 'Revue de la Presse Libre' No. 45 dropped during in the nights 4th and 5th April until 15th and 16th April 1943.

Translation of the trial proceedings of Amon Goeth, made from the original Polish edition of the trial proceedings: Proces Ludobojcy Amona Leopolda Goetha published by Centralna Zydowska Komisja Historyczna (The Central Jewish Historical Committee), 1947. The verbatim proceedings of Amon Goeth's trial are preceded by a speech by the First Prosecution Counsel, Mieczyslaw Siewierski followed by an addresss by the Defence Counsel, Dr. Pokorny. A reading of the indictment follows. This includes a general overview of Nazi activities in Poland; a specific account of Goeth's role during this period; and descriptions of Plaszow Camp, the liquidation of Krakow and Tarnow ghettoes and Szebnia camp.

This microfilm collection of correspondence documents the experiences of Julius Bloch and family and friends, some of whom managed to escape Nazi occupied Europe, and others, who did not. The papers include correspondence from his brother in Gurs concentration camp in the French Pyrénees, where he died.
