Papers of Sidney Joseph Madge, [1920-1929], comprising notes and transcripts of seventeenth century material relating to the disposal of Crown lands during the Commonwealth period (1649-1658) collated by Madge for his DSc Thesis presented at the London School of Economics in 1929, and published in 1938 as The Domesday of Crown lands: a study of the legislation, surveys and sales of Royal estates under the Commonwealth (Routledge and Sons, London, 1938). The material largely consists of notes and transcripts of Parliamentary Surveys and Parliamentary Land Sales.

Video tapes of news and current affairs programmes aired on BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky during the 1992 General Election, 10 March-8 April 1992. A daily log provides access to the material and details of programmes taped, which include news reports, special election broadcasts and political press conferences.

Papers relating to Lord Merlyn-Rees' political career, 1949-2002, concerning his role as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Among the papers are: transcripts of Merlyn Rees' taped diary, 1972-1976. These are a very useful insight into Rees' contemporary views on politics and events in Northern Ireland. The Parker Papers, 1943-1982, mainly consist of comments, corrections and suggestions from those to whom John Parker sent the first thoughts of the various chapters which would eventually form the basis of his memoirs, Father of the House, published in 1982 by Routledge and Kegan Paul Ltd. They also include various official related records concerned with particularly interesting or important moments from his political career. They consist mainly of correspondence, memorandums, reports and notes. These papers were all deposited upon the publication of his, previously mentioned, book of memoirs.

The collection consists of six separate series of records, ranging virtually the entire span of his time in the House of Commons. The six series reflect the way in which John Parker maintained his papers, each concerning a specific topic. These include records concerning his various literary compositions, the Legitimacy Act of 1959, Select Committee on Procedure, Speaker's Conference on Electoral Law and Sunday Observance.

The collection of the politician Neville Sandelson, 1923-1996, includes a series of scrapbooks of press cuttings covering Sandelson's period as an MP, files relating to the Hayes and Harlington constituency, and papers on the Labour Party and the SDP. Photocopies and typed copies of papers, 1954-1971, collected by Roger Southall whilst a student (1970-1971) at Makerere Institute of Social Research (Kampala, Uganda), including notes, minutes, and press extracts, and concerning parties and politics in Uganda, particularly the Bunyoro district, the subjects including elections, General Idi Amin Dada, and military government.

Papers, 1972-1981 (some undated), on the Philippines, including typescripts, correspondence, maps, legal documents, press cuttings and other published material, some of the material produced by the Catholic Church, dealing with affairs in the Philippines, including the work of the Panamin government agency, the Chico River Basin Project (Northern Luzon) to dam the Chico River and submerge tribal villages, attempts to 'modernise' and convert minority ethnic groups to Christianity, including alleged abuses of human rights, and the political situation, including the policies of Ferdinand Marcos.

Papers relating to Joseph Ephraim Caseley Hayford, comprising photocopy of typescript, c1930, 'The Foundations of Self-Government: Historic Speeches by ... Joseph Ephraim Casely Hayford (Leader of the West African Congress)', by an [anonymous] admirer, containing speeches delivered by Casely Hayford to the Gold Coast Legislative Council between 1918 and 1930, on subjects including the achievements of the Gold Coast Regiment, colonial administration, the peace treaty of 1919, and African civil service payments, with tributes of the Legislative Council to him following his death appended; and photocopy of a typescript account of his life, 1935.

Typescript reports, 1948-1972, of Sir Percival Griffiths containing information gathered by him on politics, government and economic affairs in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, comprising tour reports, for the India, Pakistan and Burma Association, on India, 1948-1971, and on Pakistan, 1955-1972, and reports on the political scene in India (1950-1972), 1972, and in Pakistan (1950-1969), 1969, including some information on Bangladesh.

Printed papers of the Rev J Martin relating to China, 1925-1929 and undated [1930s], including Japan tourist board brochure on Mukden (Shenyang), 1925, newspaper on the burial of Sun Yat-Sen, 1929, undated hymn music published for the Hangchow Choral Union, undated Shopping Guide to Shanghai, and undated ephemera including Christmas cards.

Papers, 1931-1958, of Robert Inkster, largely dating from the 1930s, mainly comprising correspondence with friends on subjects including Chinese affairs, Anglo-Chinese relations, the national and international political and economic situation, and the Chinese in Liverpool, including correspondence with General C Y Chang, 1931-1954. Other papers include a photograph of the United Committee for Christian Universities of China luncheon, 1937, and miscellaneous other papers, among them undated notes on China and the Chinese, including politics, language and customs, and a printed pamphlet on Tunghai University, Taichung, Taiwain, 1958.

Sound recordings and papers relating to the radio series 'India: A People Partitioned', 1997. Cassette tapes of interviews (83 tapes) and partial transcripts concern the social history of partition between India and Pakistan (1947) and its effect on people in south Asia. Interviewees included some prominent political and cultural figures, but also 'ordinary' people whose lives were affected by the events surrounding independence, including the large number of refugees created. The subjects discussed include Communism, politicians including Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Muslim League, Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus. Cassette tapes of the five broadcast programmes (3 tapes) are also included: 'The Gathering of the Storm', on the context of partition, disturbances in 1946, and Gandhi's attempts to broker peace; 'The Killing Fields of Punjab', examining partition violence; ' Tearing the Veil', on women's experiences, including abduction; 'Comers and Goers', concerning the experiences of Muslims in India and their dilemma as to whether to migrate to Pakistan or remain in India; 'Unfinished Business', on the Kashmir dispute and the continuing legacy of partition in regional politics, culture and diplomacy. The partial transcripts were made for working purposes and are an indication rather than a definitive record of the contents of the tapes. Appended to the transcripts are copies of an occasional series of articles written by Andrew Whitehead for the Indian Express based on the material he gathered. An additional deposit comprises a cassette tape of the revised programme, 'Unfinished Business', 2000, and six further interview tapes, the interviewees including key participants in India-Pakistan relations, with notes on the contents of the interviews compiled for working purposes.

Press reports, 1965-1972, of Agence France Presse from Jakarta, Indonesia, chiefly by Brian May, on foreign affairs, including relations with Malaysia, Japan, the United States, and others; foreign aid; visits of overseas politicians; political affairs, including the Indonesian Communist party and Muslim parties; political unrest, including student militancy; the Chinese community; natural disasters and disease; sport; affairs in West Irian (Irian Jaya); economic policy, industry, mining and agriculture.

Papers, 1930s-1980, of Dr Bishwa Nath Pandey, including his correspondence, photographs and notes, mainly relating to his book Nehru (1976), as well as early manuscript and typescripts drafts of the work itself.

Papers, 1926-1986, of Ifor Ball Powell, largely comprising the Philippine reference material collected by him, together with his correspondence and personal papers. The reference material covers topics such as the Philippine legislature; Philippine administration; political parties, elections and election statistics; US Philippine agreements and relations; Philippine Islands during World War II; and the City of Manila. Also included are photographs taken during Powell's field trips in Southeast and East Asia, particularly in the Philippines, and an extensive collection of press cuttings.

Correspondence and papers, c1684-c1709, of William, sixth Lord Paget, concerning his public appointments in England, Vienna and Turkey. Letters to Paget include those from English ministers of state, consuls and merchants in Turkey, Swiss Cantons and Ambassadors. Papers include royal letters, state papers and treaty drafts.

Correspondence, diaries, photographs and papers relating to South Africa, 1938-1993, collected by Hannah Stanton. They include a large amount of correspondence concerning her campaign work on issues such as apartheid; journals covering her trips abroad and appointment diaries; speeches and sermons; material concerning Helen Joseph; and a large number of photographs of friends of Hannah Stanton.

Coronation souvenirs contain miscellaneous items relating to the 1936 coronation of Edward VIII.
