Biographical history
The London office of JW Doane and Company was opened in 1893 at 21 Mincing Lane in 1899 and closed in March 1905, after the apparent failure of the head office of the company in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Although the company was described in directories as "merchants", the business of the London office was strictly that of a coffee broker.
These notes are based on London directories and information taken from the archives themselves; nothing relating to the company could be found in secondary sources.

The archives in this collection are the business records of the London office and were found in the vaults of the National Westminster Bank, Mincing Lane; attempts by the bank in 1977 to contact the owners proved unsuccessful and the archives were deposited in the Library. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
Records of JW Doane and Company, coffee brokers, comprising a complete series of account books and contract registers, together with some copy out-letter books and miscellaneous items (including printed cable codes which date from 1884 and 1890).
Records arranged by MS number, assigned during cataloguing at the Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section.
