Historia biográfica

Physical geography, imperial geography, and history and geography, were subjects taught in the Department of General Literature and Science and the Evening Studies Department at King's from the 1850s. A chair in geography was established in 1863. The department became part of the Faculty of Arts in 1893, and the subject taught under an intercollegiate arrangement with the London School of Economics from 1922, becoming known as the Joint School of Geography from 1949. The department was part of the School of Humanities from 1989 and in 2001 merged with the Geography Department of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and became part of the new School of Social Science and Public Policy.

Information contained in undergraduate files typically includes entrance form, school education, date of birth, addresses, photograph, correspondence, degree result, references, tutors' comments and essay marks. Postgraduate files generally include correspondence, references and grant applications that include information on the students' research project.

Periodic deposits by the Department

Undergraduate and withdrawal files are arranged by year of entry, then alphabetically within each year. Those for whom the date is undetermined are listed at the beginning of the series. Postgraduate students are listed in an alphabetical run, along with approximate dates.

Subject to an eighty year closure period from date of leaving, but may be consulted by Departmental staff and other College members with permission from the Head of Department.

Copies, subject to the condition of the original, can be supplied to Departmental staff. Requests to publish original material should be submitted to the Director of Archive Services, King's College London.
