Biographical history

The Language and Communications Centre at King's was established in 1989 to provide language teaching to non-linguists. It has also provided external teaching and examination provision for courses notably including the London Business School MBA programme, evening classes and open learning courses. It was subsequently renamed the Modern Language Centre and is currently part of the School of Humanities.

The Language and Communications Centre at King's was established in 1989 to provide language teaching to non-linguists. It has also provided external teaching and examination provision for courses notably including the London Business School MBA programme, evening classes and open learning courses. The records of the King's College London Language and Communications Centre/Modern Language Centre comprise minutes of staff meetings, correspondence concerning the management of the Centre and externally funded teaching projects, and mark sheets and examination results, 1989-1995; notably including minutes of staff meetings, 1989-1990; minutes of the School of Humanities Executive Board, with strategic plans and correspondence relating to the general management of the Centre, 1993-1994; correspondence relating to the finances of the Centre, 1990- 1994; correspondence and reports concerned with TEMPUS (Trans-European Mobility Scheme for University Studies), 1991-1993; correspondence on the provision of foreign language teaching by the Centre for MBA students in the London Business School, 1991-1994; correspondence relating to the Japanese-English Kanji project on the study of the use of combinations of Japanese alphabet characters, 1992-1993; mark sheets, examination correspondence, exam question papers and results, 1989-1995.

Administrative records are generally closed for 30 years except for published material and some committee and other minutes. Staff and student records are subject to an 80 year closure period after the date of leaving, but may be consulted by Departmental and other College staff with permission from the Head of the Centre.

Copies, subject to the condition of the original, may be supplied for research use only. Requests to publish original material should be submitted to the Director of Archive Services.
