Biographical history
The founding committee of King's College London first met in 1828 and the College, instituted by Royal Charter in 1829, opened in 1831. Under the King's College London Transfer Act of 1908 the secular departments of the existing King's College London became University of London King's College on 1 January 1910, to be governed by the Senate of the University via a College Delegacy. The theological department was separated from the rest of the College, to be known as King's College London, and continued to be governed by its council. Financial records were usually compiled by the College clerks under the direction of the College Secretary.

Under the King's College London Transfer Act of 1908 the secular departments of the existing King's College London became University of London King's College on 1 January 1910, to be governed by the Senate of the University via a College Delegacy. Salaries and wages books of King's College London, 1849-1981, comprising salaries books, 1849-1942, including senior members of the administrative staff, among them the Principal and Secretary, giving information on the nature of the recipient's work, annual stipend and amount due, some also including general financial information on the College; salaries books of academic staff, 1909-1914, 1951-1981 (Ref: KAS/SAB); wages signature books, 1874-1950, for ancillary staff (Ref: KA/WSB).
Wages signature sheets have not been retained beyond 1950 due to the regular creation of personnel files for ancillary and technical staff from that date. Wages summary volumes, 1913-1948, and wages analysis volumes, 1938-1950, have been destroyed since this information is found in the accounts.

KA/SAB6 (salaries book, 1951-1981) is closed. Otherwise open, subject to signature of reader's undertaking form.
