Biographical history
In 1826, a group of members of the licensed victualling trade formed a society, named the Licensed Victuallers' Asylum, to relieve decayed and aged members of their trade, and their wives or widows. The following year, they acquired land in the Old Kent Road, Camberwell, on which they subsequently erected 103 separate dwellings to serve as almshouses. The asylum was incorporated by royal charter in 1842. In 1921, the asylum was renamed the Licensed Victuallers' Benevolent Institution, which last appears in the London Post Office directories in 1960. Its subsequent history is unknown.

These records were bought by Guildhall Library with those of the Society of Licensed Victuallers. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
Records of the Licensed Victuallers' Asylum, later the Licensed Victuallers' Benevolent Institution, comprising: abstract of the charter of incorporation and of rules, ordinances and by-laws, 1851 (Ms 21458); extracts from the charter of incorporation, [1860] (Ms 21459); and copy opinions concerning property, [1890] (Ms 21460). They were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff in 1985.
