The Life Offices' Association was founded in 1889 by representatives of the major life assurance offices. It acted as a forum for consultation and combined action in response to problems arising from the expansion of life assurance business, geographically and in the new types of risk being rated. The Association was concerned in particular with the effects of insurance and tax legislation.

The Association ceased to exist in 1985 when its functions were taken over by the Association of British Insurers.

Scrapbooks of circulars and other material supplied to members, were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library by the Association of British Insurers on 18 March 1988. This deposit was converted to an outright gift in June 1994. Further scrapbooks were given to the Manuscripts Section on 4 August 1995, completing the series. Two cash books were given to the Section in 1996 (Ms 30618); two minute books in 1998 (Ms 31516). The existence of any other records of the Life Offices' Association is unknown. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009. Further records were gifted to London Metropolitan Archives in 2011.

Records of the Life Offices' Association, including minute books (including minutes, 1985-1989 of Life Insurance Council of the successor the Association of British Insurers) scrapbooks (containing agendas, minutes, reports, and circulars); cash books.

A large number of correspondence and case files dating from the 1890s, which appeared to duplicate the material in the scrapbooks, was recommended by the Manuscripts Section for destruction as of no permanent historical value.

Records arranged by MS number, assigned during cataloguing at the Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section.
