Joseph Jackson Lister was a wine merchant and amateur British opticist and physicist and the father of Joseph Lister. He carried out the research in the design of lenses that transformed the microscope.

Joseph Jackson Lister was a wine merchant and amateur British opticist and physicist and the father of Joseph Lister. He carried out the research in the design of lenses that transformed the microscope.

From the library of Lord Lister, sold after the latter's death by Henry Sotheran and Co.

Seven account books and ledgers of J J Lister were purchased by Thomas H Court from whom MSS. 6178-6181 were purchased in 1919 (Museum reg. nos. 16579-16582). The other three volumes, 1810-49, were lent to the Wellcome Museum for the 1927 Lister Centenary Exhibition, but were returned to T H Court in 1945. Cf. In the Wellcome Library: MSS.3298-3303, 6182-6200 and 6961-6989 constitute a Lister family collection, centring on J.J. Lister's son Sir Joseph Lister but also including Joseph Jackson Lister material. A diary by Agnes Lister, wife of Sir Joseph, is held as MS.3297. A few members of the Lister family are represented in the correspondence of the Hodgkin and Howard families, held as PP/HO.
