Much of the collection is made up of diaries and notebooks relating to expeditions sent to Africa by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to study diseases such as malaria and trypanosomiasis. From Todd's subsequent career there is also material on journeys to Western Canada to study Swamp Fever in horses and to Poland to study Typhus, some general notes on tropical diseases, a laboratory notebook on experiments with fever ticks and a paper on the Congo Free State as a political unit. The dates covered are 1901-1920. A final block of material consists of letters and loose papers including sketches, covering 1890-1949.

Prescription books from 16 Jun 1745-25 Dec 1747 and 12 Nov1768-30 Nov 1769. The second volume contains entries for medicines prescribed for the Duke of Wellington, who was born at Mornington House, 24 Upper Merrion Street, Dublin on April 29, 1769. On the outside of the upper cover is a slip dated 17/8/1899, which states that the original earliest entry in the volume for 30 April 1769 has been cut out and framed for display in the shop at 49 Dawson Street, Dublin: another dated July 2 has also been cut out and 'given to Fielding Ould [?] Esqre' (i.e. Sir Fielding Ould, Dublin obstetrician, 1710-89). This manuscript still contains entries for the Countess of Mornington 2 May; 'Lord Mornington's young child', 4 May; 'The Countess of Mornington, the young child' 16 May; 'Lady Mornington, Master Frank Wesley, Young son', 25 May; 'The Hon. Master Arthur Wesley', 17 June. This last entry is also found for 2 July, 3 July, 6 July. According to the notice in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Wellington used the form 'Wesley' for his name until 1798. Produced in Dublin.

Student notes taken from Nicolas Fournier's teaching on materia medica, 1744-1752.

'Recueil de divers secrets rares et éprouvés concernant la Chymie, l'Alchymie, la Médecine, la Philosophie Hermétique, le tout tiré des plus célèbres Médecins et Artistes de l'Europe. Traduit du latin et de l'italien par G.G., Interprète juré des langues orientales', with other extracts and receipts from alchemical and medical authors. The third volume contains 37 full-page symbolic alchemical water-colour drawings with 68 figures (pp. 304-369): there are two symbolic diagrams in red and black on p. 190 and illustrations of alchemical apparatus on pp. 419, 430, 547. These three MSS. have been tentatively dated c 1765, as on the fly-leaf of Vol. II is an inscription: '1762. 16 aout. Tome 2ème'. Below this is the date 1785, but by the script, they seem to have been written consecutively within a few years.

Book by Sir John Jacob Hansler entitled Dyspepsia. Or the Autobiography of an Invalid. Containing many singular Adventures and Providential Escapes during an eventful life, interspersed with a Variety of Original Anecdotes, useful Information, Medical Recipes from some of the first Galens of the late and the most celebrated Esculapians of the present Day-the whole compiled with an earnest Desire to promote Health and Longevity. As well as Truth and Amusement ... In two Volumes. Mainly holograph, but with passages written by another hand, probably that of a lady. The latest date found in the text is 1837, and the diary proper seems to end in 1835, having been begun in about 1808. The book is dedicated to H.R.H. Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex [1773-1843], and was apparently prepared for the press, but no record of its publication has been traced.

Volume 2: Strange events, accidents and phenomena: with other historical occurrences worth observation, pp 63-72 'Paradoxes in physick and anatomy'. The date 1732 is found on p 11 and 1742 on p 74. An entry on p 3, dated 1771 seems to be by a different hand. Produced in Oxford. Compiler copied from other sources down contemporary events and ideas of note. Alchemical writings by Hollandus and others, early-mid 18th century; item 1: Traité d'ouvrages minéraux, ou de la Pierre des Philosophes. There are some small pen-drawings of alchemical apparatus in some inner margins. Inserted as a frontispiece, is a symbolic [?] sepia drawing of a man rescuing a child from drowning in a lake. This work was first published-in German-in 1600 at Middelburg: no record of a French translation has been traced.

On the first fly-leaf 'Anne Cath. Phelps' [c. 1820?], and on the first leaf 'F. Hearne. Jan'y 7. 1865'; item 2: Testament de Jean Isaac ou opération minérale: traduite du flammand en latin par Jaques de Zomere. Collection of medical receipts and remedies with several indexes. On p. 6 of Vol. I is the date 1726, but there are additions by other hands, one of which on p. 528 of Vol. II is dated 1784. In Vol. II, paginated 511-514, is a printed 'Propriétez de l'élixir de M. Garrus médecin', probably contemporary with the MS.

Collection of papers chiefly on gynaecology, plus file of documents relating to the surgeon, Christopher Martin (certificates, letters, biographical information), 1887-1930.

Botanices Institutiones juxta Turnefortii methodum: two volumes of notes of lectures by Pietro Moliterni, given at Naples University, 1738-1739.

The collection covers both Pettigrew's medical and antiquarian activities, which are intermingled in the material's arrangement. The medical items include correspondence with many medical figures, medical jurisprudence (an Anniversary Oration delivered to the Medical Society of London), corpulence, hydrophobia, medical observations by army officers in India, and an autobiographical memoir of the philanthropist and prison-reformer James Neild (1744-1814), transcribed by Pettigrew and incorporated into his life of John Coakley Lettsom M.D. The antiquarian items include material on Kett's Rebellion, Hindu deities, the library of the Duke of Sussex and correspondence with the Italian antiquary Giovanni Spano (1803-1878) and Gaetano Cara, as part of Pettigrew's role as Vice-President of the British Archaeological Society. Types of material held include notebooks, loose papers, correspondence and diplomas.

Secreti medicinali. A collection of medical receipts: the first volume mainly in Italian, with a few entries in Latin; the second volume in Italian and Latin, with additions by other hands. Titles within a pen-drawn ornamental border. Vol. I is entitled 'Secreti medicinali'; Vol. II was apparently originally entitled 'Secreti di medicina', but some additions were written in, so that it now reads 'Experimentati/Secreti de Medicina/Raccolti/Per sanare molti mali e/conservare la Sanità'. A considerable part of this volume seems to be by the same hand as the first volume. Volume I is in four Books, and the compiler's initials are given in Receipt No. 77 of the first book: 'provato de me X.P.' and in the next entry: 'che io X.P. ho veduto l'efetti'. The date 1685 occurs on fol. 10 of Book II, and 1699 on fol. 28 of the last Book. Volume II is in two Books. The second has an engraved historiated title-page, with a blank space inscribed: 'Secreti di Medicina Anno' 1699. This book contains 533 numbered receipts. Facing No. 438 is a rough pen-drawing of a distilling apparatus: opposite No. 438 is an inserted printed broadside advertising 'Il vero Balsamo Aureo di Lorenno, chiamato Balsamo Divino' printed at Modena, but undated. This folio sheet has been cut down and folded. This remedy, and an 'Acqua Triacale' by the same Lorenno, are entered as Nos. 438 and 439 of the MS. The latest date in this volume is 1725, in the margin of Receipt No. 530.

The name of the firm responsible for this collection has not been ascertained, and has not been found in any of the volumes, but from the names of physicians appended to many of the prescriptions it seems to have been in Islington or in that part of London, for a large proportion of these are associated with the Islington Dispensary. Among these are many entries for Henry Bateman, FRCS [1806-1880] who was surgeon and later consulting surgeon to that institution. [Cf. Obituary notice in the Lancet 1880, ii, p. 874.] Pasted inside the upper cover of Vol. 18 [1861-1863] is a cut-out signature of Florence Nightingale [1820-1910]. Pasted inside the upper and lower covers of Vol. 27 [1884-1888], are two printed advertisements of J. Ramel, Crosby Hall Chamber, 24 Bishopsgate St., who describes himself as a 'Sanitary India-Rubber and Chirurgical Instruments Manufacturer and Importer'. One of the lists includes contraceptives. They are here entered as 'F.L.s', priced at from 6/6 per gross: there are also 'Marguerites'-for use by women-at 2/- each. Produced in London.

These MSS., now divided into two volumes, formed originally one volume. There is a pen-drawn historiated frontispiece to the 'Antidotaire': texts within black rules. The Antidotire is dated 1662, the other volume 1663.

The collection consists of diaries, correspondence and other papers from the period in which Ross was medical officer of the coolie ship Hong Bee, travelling between Penang and the China coast via Hong Kong. MS.6117 includes a temporary commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps, 1916.

Laufenberg's work on "Versehung des Leibs" followed by an anonymous "Practica" (assigned to Barthomolaeus Salernitanus). Original 15th century volume plus early 20th century transcript by its then owner, Theodor Engelmann.

The compiler's initials are found on p. 178 of Vol. II in the form 'C.T.M.D.', and again on p. 279 of the same volume as 'C.T.d.m.'. There are several dates found in the second volume, the latest is 1683 on p. 26 and again on p. 27.
