The Brain archive comprises his personal and professional papers together with sampled case notes from his private practice, 1865-1977. As well as medical papers, there is a significant amount of material relating to Brain's philosophical and literary interests, and some papers of Brain's family and of his wife Stella (nee Langdon-Down).

Papers of Sir Edward Dodds, relating in part to his professional life and in part to his historical and other outside interests. They include notes and correspondence about the illnesses of King George V and his daughter Princess Mary as well as biographical material about Dodds himself.

Ent's papers, c.1641-1685, consist of his Apologia pro Circuitione Sanguinis..., in his hand, thought to be a revision prepared for the second edition of the work, c.1641-1685. The volume also includes the texts of some of Ent's speeches, such as his presidential addresses at the College, 1670-1674, and 1676, and contains some accounts entered by Peter Ent, 1671-1674, who was in possession of the volume for a time; Ent's anatomical lectures, delivered at the College 13-15 April 1665, in his hand, 1665.

Hamey's papers, 1611-c.1660, include his copy of Caspar Bartholinus' (1585-1629) Anatomicae Institutiones Corporis Humani (1611), with annotations in Hamey's hand, 1611-c.1640s; Large volume of Hamey's notes on medical subjects made whilst an apprentice, 1624; Manuscript copy of his Goulstonian Lectures, in his hand, 1647/8; Commentaries on the plays of Aristophanes (c.445-c.386 BC), with indexes on Vespas, Aves, Acharnenses, Equites, and Ranas, c.1650, with critical notes and an index on Plutus, 1650, with explanatory notes and an index on Nubes, c.1650; Commentary on the Greek poets, c.1650; Biographic sketches of 85 of his contemporaries, mostly physicians but also laymen, such as Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), c.1660; Medical notes, suggested to be corrections to the Pharmacopoeia, 17th century; and notes on the College, 17th century.

Sir Henry Head's papers, 1891-1909, consist of his casebooks of patients with Herpes Zoster, with sketches and photographs, chiefly from Head's work at the London Hospital, 1891-1909, and his casebooks of patients with various diseases, with sketches and charts, from his work at the City of London Hospital for Diseases of the Heart and Lungs, Victoria Park, 1894.

Jenner's diary, 1787-1806, containing his observations on the natural history of the cuckoo, and notes on his dissections of other birds and various domestic animals.

Macmichael's papers, 1827-1830, consist of his author's copies of The Gold-Headed Cane, interleaved with notes in his hand, 1827 (MS113) and the Lives of British Physicians, with additional notes about William Harvey in his hand, 1830 (MS439).

Western Manuscripts, c 1250-19th century, including receipt books (domestic medical remedies and culinary recipes), illuminated psalters and prayer books, case notes and prescription books. highlights include: the Wilton Psalter, c 1250; a 15th century copy of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales; medical receipt and prescription books from the 17th century.

Memoirs of Richard Pulteney by his friend William George Maton, MD, prefixed to a second edition of Dr Pulteney's Life and writings of Linnaens, (1805), illustrated by various original letters, drawings, prints etc. and interleaved with diplomas from various medical societies, and catalogue of the library of Dr Pulteney.

The papers of R.W. Innes Smith chiefly relate to his research into various aspects of medical history and biography during the 1920s and early 1930s; and in particular to his interest in British medical students at European universities in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, which led to the publication of his book English-speaking students of medicine at the University of Leyden (Oliver & Boyd: Edinburgh, London, 1932). His papers also include three notebooks dating from his time as a medical student, c1900, but apart from these all the papers appear to date from after 1920. A small number of related items, c1933-c1935, were added to the collection by Innes Smith's daughter after his death.

Snow's casebooks, 1848-1858, three volumes written in the style of a diary, recording Snow's chloroform administration in his well-established anaesthetic practice in London.

Papers of Daniel Whistler, including commonplace books of prescriptions, diagnoses, exercises in metaphysics and logic, philology, definitions of terms, notes on heraldry and extracts from Aristotle and Hippocrates (in Greek) and from Mercurialis, Fernelius, Sennentus, and others (in Latin); extracts from Tacitus, Caesar, Suetonius, Plutarch, Strabo, Pliny, Quintilian, Aeschylus and Valerius Maximus, in the hand of Whistler; In Aristotelis lib.3 Physicorum Commentarius Analyticus in the hand of Whistler; cash book, pharmacopoeia and medical aphorisms.

Sarah Wigges' recipe book of medical receipts, 1616, including a receipt for "A swift medicine for an ague, by Dr. Gulston," and "Annotations and practicall receipts and processes taken out of Basil Valentin his Triumph wagon of Antimony." Also "Receipts out of ye breviary of health compiled by Andrew Boord, Do in Phisick, on Englishman, imprinted at London 1587" and remedies from Dr. Pratt and Nich. Culpeper. Pages 340-484 and 574-619 are in a later hand than the rest of the MS.

Towards the end of the volume there are 53 pages (with separate pagination) devoted to cookery receipts. These appear to be in the handwriting of "Mo. Wigges" who is, apparently, the daughter of the first owner of the book. There are indexes both at the beginning and at the end of the volume.

Papers of Sir Anthony Alfred Bowlby, comprising a diary, 1914-1919, recording his experiences as Consulting Surgeon to the British Army.

The collection is divided into four main groups: The first group contains papers relating to William Clift's work as conservator of the Hunterian Museum. This is the largest of the four groups and contains a number of sub divisions such as explanation and display of specimens, expanding the collections, administration of the museum, and correspondence. This group also contains the transcripts made by Clift and others of the Hunterian manuscripts. The second group contains work carried out by William Clift as an illustrator for publications. The third group contains a small amount of personal material that is in the collection. The fourth group contains transcripts and copies of manuscript material by William Clift that is held in other repositories such as the Natural History Museum.

The collection represents the contacts through two centuries of a group of men and women of high distinction ramifying through the medical, legal and literary worlds. It forms a not unimportant fund of minor historical material, comprising more than a thousand letters from nearly five hundred writers.

The autograph letters are mounted in 10 large volumes: -

1. Letterbook of John Arbuthnot (1667-1735). The most interesting letters are those of Pope and Swift and their circle written in 1714 when the Queen's death involved the destruction of their political hopes. Letterbook of William Hunter (1719-1783). It includes letters from Tobias Smollett the novelist, from Dr. Johnson thanking Hunter for presenting his book to the King, and from Edward Gibbon 'proposing himself the pleasure of attending some of Dr. Hunter's Anatomical lectures.'

2. Hunter and Baillie family letters and reminiscences, including the letters written by John to William Hunter from active service in 1761-62; poems by Sophia Baillie, Jenner family letters.

   3. Letters to Matthew Baillie from the Royal Princesses. Letters of the Bentham family, including three from Jeremy Bentham. Autograph letter collection includes letters from Thomas Carlyle and Charles Dickens. 1735 - 1845

   The Hunter Baillie collection comprises also a number of manuscript books, the oldest of which is a commonplace book of the early eighteenth century, giving details of family history of the Hunters. Matthew Baillie's notebooks include: -

Journal of a tour in Europe in 1788 and A short memoir of my life, 1818. 'Some brief observations from my own experience upon a considerable number of diseases', in two volumes. n.d. With these are his casebooks, fee-books and other professional notes, including details of his attendance on King George III. Baillie records that his total annual fees mounted from £121 in 1792 to £9,995 in 1815.

Papers of Elizabeth Isham and Thomas Sendall, c 1659, comprising a manuscript volume of recipes. The title page contains two titles. The first 'This is a booke of phisick of Elizabeth Isham' and the second 'Thomas Sendall Scripsit An[no] domini 1659'. The titles are in two different scripts. It was possibly originally started by Elizabeth Isham and then continued by Thomas Sendall. Other scripts also occur in the volume. Some recipes are titled with names of their 'creators' eg Lady Simon, Dr Stevens, Lady Dowglasse, Mrs Dormor. Inserted after page 48 there is a short note on the theatres of Elizabethan London.

Papers of Edward Victor Hugo, 1915-1918, comprising a diary relating to the Gallipoli campaign, when Hugo was senior medical officer of the hospital ship GASCON, 1915; a diary including maps of Baghdad and Lower Mesopotamia, relating to Hugo's period in India and Mesopotamia, 1916; a diary relating to the period when Hugo was in Mesopotamia, and was appointed CMG, 1917; a diary relating to the period when Hugo was in Mesopotamia, including inserted letters, 1918. The diaries contain references to the weather, movements of the ship, living conditions, and details of patients attended, and include inserted letters and photographs.
