      Papers of Ann Carlton, primarily relating to her work as Local Government Officer for the Labour Party between 1967 and 1974. There are also some papers from the late 1950s and early-mid 1960s when Michael Ward and later Joan Bourne were Local Government Officer. The collection primarily consists of papers from various groups and committees Carlton and her predecessors were involved with, particularly the Labour Party Home Policy sub-committees relating to local government, which the Local Government Officer was Secretary of. These were the Local Government Sub-Committee (papers from 1959-1960 and 1963-1964), the Regional and Local Government Advisory Committee (papers from 1965-1970), and the Regional and Local Government Sub-Committee (papers from 1970-1971). Carlton was also Secretary for the Association of Municipal Corporations Labour Group (papers from 1963-1973). Other papers relate to a Study Group on the Maud Report on the Management of Local Government (papers from 1964 and 1967), the Association of Education Committees and its future (papers from 1973-1974), and the reorganisation of local authority associations (papers from 1973). There are also copies of papers circulated to Labour groups from 1968-1972, and correspondence and press cuttings relating to Ann Carlton's work.

      The papers have a particular focus on proposals to reorganise local government in the 1960s and 1970s, and the impact of this on local authority associations. The topics of housing and town planning, local government conferences and local elections also feature heavily.

      Petition, [1720?], to the justices of the peace for the West Riding of Yorkshire on behalf of Abraham Bean, a farmer of the parish of Cantley, near Doncaster, and signed by John Fox, Vicar of Cantley, Samuel Crabtree, William Morehouse and John Leetham, parishioners. The petition 'Sheweth That your Petitioner is an honest and labourious Person And hath maintain'd himself and family (since he had one) reputably on a Small Farm in This Parish...', and appeals for further aid - the Justices had granted £10 immediate relief the previous August at Rotherham. He had lost 16 head of 'Great Cattle' in the winter, and his house had been burned down. Both he and his wife had suffered from burns, and they and their two children had been forced to enter an alms house 'and are there now barely kept from starving by the Parish'. A note is added at the foot: '29 1. as Charity to be paid by the Treasurer'.

      Papers on Nana Asma'u include copies of her manuscript poems (1820-1865) and later papers relating to her work, including translations, 1976-1984. Papers on works by Shehu dan Fodio include copies of his poems on male-female relationships (1789 and undated) and later papers relating to his work, 1975-1981. Papers on works by Asma'u's female relatives and descendants include copies of poems and writings by various authors (c1860-1934 and undated) and later papers relating to the subject, c1950-1990. Other material comprises field notes on the remnants of Asma'u's disciples, the Yan Taru, 1973-1990; papers on the milieu in which Asma'u lived in Gobir, c1900-1984, including Gobir chiefs; papers, including press cuttings, on the situation of women in northern Nigeria in the 1980s, the subjects including Muslims, prostitution, women's organizations, medical matters, and women's education.

      Papers, 1903-1992, including articles, reports and press cuttings, on Sokoto relate to geological history, prehistory, palaeontology, archaeology, pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial history, the subjects including the social and economic history of the city of Sokoto, colonial administration, British fears over Mahdism, and local government and economic issues in Sokoto state in modern Nigeria.

      Records of the parish of Saint Giles Cripplegate, Fore Street, City of London. The main archive dates from the 17th century, but there are also parish registers (baptisms, marriages, banns, burials) from 1561 and estate records from 1553. The archive includes estate and charity material which relates jointly to Saint Giles and Saint Luke Old Street. Saint Luke was established in 1733 from the Middlesex part of St Giles.

      Records of the Metropolitan Dispensary, Fore Street: The records comprise minutes of the managing committee, 1833-1924; ledger, 1854-88; and draft petitions and notes, 1854, [1857?].

      Records of the Cripplegate Church Foundation: The records comprise minutes 1892-1959 and financial records 1892-1966. Further material relating to the Foundation may be found amongst other parish records: see Ms 25026-7 for meeting papers, 1945-53, and accounts authorised for payment, 1942-62; and Ms 6048/12 for minutes of joint meetings of the vestry and the Cripplegate Church Foundation, 1963-5.

      Records of the Cripplegate Foundation: The records comprise minutes 1891-1954 and printed particulars of the constitution of various parish charities with list of meetings 1951-52.
