The Association was formed in 1872 and its members met weekly in the City, most often at 8 Queen Street, Cheapside. It became the London district branch of the National Phonographic Society in 1894. In 1898 this body became the Incorporated Phonographic Society, a society still in existence.

These records were given to Guildhall Library by Bishopsgate Institute in 2002. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
London Phonetic Shorthand Writers' Association records comprise: an Association magazine, articles written in shorthand, and miscellaneous letters and notes. They were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff in 2005.
