Biographical details of Surgeon Lt-Cmdr McGrath can be found in obituary notices in the British Medical Journal and The Lancet.

Volume was given to the Wellcome Institute in 1927 by Mrs McGrath as part of a larger gift of medical books, presumably belonging to her late husband. In 1980 it was transferred to the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre.
