The Medical Pilgrims were founded by Sir Arthur Hurst in 1928. There was a chosen membership of 20 and annual pilgramages were made to foreign and British cities.

Papers given to the Wellcome Library by Professor Stephen Tomlinson, Honorary Secretary of the Pilgrims, in 1998.

Papers of the Medical Pilgrims, 1928-1995, comprising archives of the Medical Pilgrims, 1928-1995; notebooks, 1928-1978 and 1980; Scribes' reports, 1928, 1957 and 1959-1995; correspondence relating to a visit to China, 1970s; minutes, 1982-1995; publication The Medical Pilgrims 1928-1955 ; items from individual Pilgrims; scrapbook, possibly from John Hay; file relating to Sir Melville Arnott, 1967-1976; files relating to the history of the Medical Pilgrims by Dr Clifford Hawkins; biographical material relating to Sir Arthur Hurst; and slides.

Duplicates have been weeded.

As outlined in Scope and Content. The records are divided into two main groups, the archives of the Pilgrims themselves and material accumulated by particular Pilgrims.

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.

Photocopies/photographs/microfilm are supplied for private research only at the Archivist's discretion. Please note that material may be unsuitable for copying on conservation grounds, and that photographs cannot be photocopied in any circumstances. Readers are restricted to 100 photocopies in twelve months. Researchers who wish to publish material must seek copyright permission from the copyright owner.

Papers of the Travelling Surgical Society, an analogous organisation, are held as SA/TSS.
