      Manuscript volume of summary surgical lecture notes compiled by Professor Albert Carless, 1907-1911, possibly for the instruction of nurses, under a wide variety of headings comprising surgical bacteriology and its manifestation in the descriptions of the types and treatment of skin lesions, gangrene, ulcers, septicaemia and tetanus; the treatment of arterio-venous wounds, aneurysms and haemorrhages, and the diagnosis and treatment of gastric ulcers and carcinomas, peritonitis and injuries to the abdominal walls; skeletal abnormalities including rickets, inflammation of the bone and spinal incongruities, syphilis and skull fractures. The collection also includes loose pages listing the subject of individual lectures.

      File of case notes mainly relating to the work of Dr Robert Knox and William Fergusson at the Old Surgeon's Hall and Edinburgh Royal Dispensary, but also referring to earlier cases, 1827-1837, including an operation to correct a perforated anus in a young child, with accompanying correspondence recalling the case, 1841, and operations to rectify a hernia and hare lip, infant limb fractures, defects of the spermatic cord, and a post mortem examination of the abdominal cavity; printed prospectus of the summer classes in practical anatomy and operative surgery undertaken by Dr Robert Knox, 1832; single volume of case notes made by Fergusson while at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, 1839-1840, including examples of necrosis, syphilis, frost bite, but principally fractures, mainly of the tibia, femur, fibula and cranium.

Victor Horsley's papers include large sections on his medical career, his service in the army during the Great War, and his political and social interests, including his involvement in the temperance movement and the Medical Defence Union, support for the suffragettes and for Home Rule for Ireland, and his role in the reform of the bodies representing the medical profession: the General Medical Council, the British Medical Association, and the Royal College of Surgeons. His personal papers reflect his interest in archaeology and genealogy.

      (1) Calendar for the year 1471 (German), followed by instructions for use and chapters on the zodiac, the seven planets, the four 'complexions', blood-letting, etc, with plain and coloured ink illustrations (some incomplete) (ff 1v-92v);
      (2) Aristotelis Brief Am Kunig Alexander (letter purported to have been written by Aristotle to King Alexander, offering advice on his health, in prose and in verse, in fact part of one of Aristotle's suppositious works, the Secreta Secretorum) (ff 93r-106v);
      (3) Calendar for 1439, 1458, 1477 and 1496 (Latin), accompanied by astronomical chapters, with tables and instructions for use (ff 109v-130r);
      (4) Elucidarus (a summary of Christian theology by Honorius Augustodunensis, in the form of a dialogue) (ff 131r-159r);
      (5) Epistel Des Juden Samuel (epistle of the Jew Samuel) (ff 160r-186v).
      The content of the two calendars, (1) and (3), is nearly identical.
      Folios 107r-109r, 130v, 159v and 187r-187v are blank.
      Signed by the scribe, Nicholas Pfaldorffer (f 106v).The guards in the centre of each quire consist of strips cut from a 13th-century manuscript. Folio 188r has a 16th-century house charm, consisting of words taken from the Antiphon of St Agatha.
