The records of the Western Dispensary comprise chiefly minute books, annual reports and patient registers.

Papers of Thomas Wharton comprising his letterbook 1672-1673 and George Wharton's 'Calendarium Carolinum' annotated by Thomas Wharton with records of his medical cases, prescriptions, notes on treatment, copies of letters, receipts and expenditures and notes on current events 1663-[1666].

Papers of William Francis Victor Bonney, 1898-1953, comprising the typescript and accompanying illustrations of Bonney's memoirs; 3 volumes of reprints of papers and articles written by Bonney, 1898-1938; 2 copies of a dinner speech attributed to Bonney, 1952, with accompanying correspondence; and letters to the librarian, 1924-1942.

The papers relate exclusively to Bryce's service for the Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons. The material is principally correspondence but includes minutes, agendas and circulars and a sequence of printed membership booklets, 1934-1958. There are papers relating to the foundation of the Society in 1933, including the replies to the original invitations to join the Society (sent out by Bryce), to relations between the Society and the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, and to overseas visits of the Society to Switzerland in 1934 and to Berlin and Bruges in 1937. Later material reflects the adjustments necessitated by the Second World War and the establishment of the National Health Service.

Diary of a resurrectionist, 1811-1812, probably Joshua Naples, describing his activities supplying bodies to anatomists in London, including to St Thomas's and St Bartholomew's Hospitals.

Papers relating to Sir John Eric Erichsen, 1881, comprising a volume listing the names of subscribers to the University College London Testimonial Fund for Sir John Eric Erichsen in 1881. The fund was to obtain a permanent memorial to acknowledge his services to the School of Medicine of University College, and to students of surgery in all parts of the world. Including a printed list of names and a letter inviting subscriptions to the fund, folded into the front of the volume.

Papers of Sydney Humphryes, 1646-c1668, comprising a volume containing 'receipts' or recipes compiled by Sydney Humphryes, although the volume contains a variety of other hands. Including recipes for fruit waters and hair dyes, as well as treatments for burns, vomiting, the plague, and scrofula.

Papers of Johannis Freer, 1744, comprising a volume titled Sum ex Libris Johannis Freer. Tyr. Henric. Hollier Pharmacop. Birmingham. Octob. 24 1744. Observationes Chirurgicae, containing notes from lectures, published lectures and anatomical demonstrations, on topics including blood, bones, the eye, Catarracts, the ear, and midwifery. Lecturers include Dr Nicholds, Dr Harvey, Mr Sharp, Mr Girl, Mr Fern, Mr Cheselden, Mr John Douglas, Mr Craddock, and Dr Monro. Venues of lectures include St Thomas' and Guys Hospital.

Also containing biographical information about John Ramsbotham, compiled by John William Walker, FRCS, who donated the volume.

Papers relating to naval medical history, 1932, comprising a volume titled Grievances of Naval Surgeons containing precis of letters published in The Lancet from 1827-1902, compiled by 'Surgeon Captain, Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, September 1932'; 2 letters from Christopher Lloyd of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, to Miss Jessie Dobson, concerning a historical enquiry (24 Oct 1960), and a visit to look at 'your Lancet volume'; and a volume containing issues which appeared in The Lancet in the 19th century, for instance, the exclusion of naval medical officers from the King's Levees, a new mode of punishment in the Navy, hospital ships, and the Gilbert Blane Medal.

Papers of William Maiden, 1812-1824, comprising a cutting from the National Register containing a letter to the editor from T Paxton, on 'Mr Tipple's Extraordinary Case', 26 Jul 1812; a copy of the second edition (1813) of the original publication by Maiden titled An Account of a Case of Recovery after an Extraordinary Accident, by which the shaft of a chaise had been forced through the thorax. The label on the front was written by Sir Richard Owen. Including an autograph letter from William Clift to William Maiden, 18 Feb 1824 and an original drawing by William Clift; draft title pages for the re-publication of the Shaft Case by William Maiden, including notes on Mr Tipple's health for the 10 years following the accident, and an account of the post-mortem; manuscript drafts for the introduction of the re-publication of the case; manuscript containing notes on Tipple's health after the accident. The Loudoun Medical Papers, relating to John Campbell, 1762-1763, comprising 3 large volumes of correspondence and other manuscripts relating to the medical hospital during the British expedition to Portugal in 1762-1763 where Lieutenant-General John Campbell was second in command of the English Army; letters from John Hunter; and a written catalogue of the letters compiled by George Ernest Gask (FRCS) in 1935-1936.

Papers of Henry Bence Jones, 1803-1873, including correspondence to and from various recipients, relating to the Royal Institution of Great Britain, in particular its lectures (CG4/1&2).

The correspondence, papers and diaries of Sir Charles Blagden. Blagden's papers are interesting on several levels, generally for his close contact with European men of learning, and his relationship with Sir Joseph Banks. Blagden's professional researches are represented by medical notes in the boxed sequence. These are grouped with papers on other subject interests, including linguistics, e.g. a draft Tahitian-English dictionary, compiled from conversations with Omai, whom Blagden inoculated after Omai's voyage to England with James Cook. Blagden's interest in antiquities and travel is documented by diary entries, as is his intercourse with fellow scientists, particularly those associated with the founding of the Royal Institution.

Extensive papers of Howard Walter Florey, Baron Florey, relating to almost every aspect of his career in science and public life. The scientific materials include a complete run of laboratory notebooks, 1924-1968, files on the work for which Florey is best known, penicillin and antibiotics, 1940-1962, together with papers, research notes and photographs on mucus secretion, traumatic shock and electron microscopy. Florey's writings are preserved in the form of drafts and proofs of published items, together with relevant correspondence. His correspondence indicates the depth of his involvement in the affairs of particular organisations, notably the Oxford University School of Pathology and the Royal Society. The work of Ethel Florey (née Hayter) and Margaret Augusta Florey (née Fremantle) is also present.

'Memoir au College Royal de Medecine sur l'utilite d'un Tratement simple pour les Maladies Chirurgicales en genral, etc', by Louis Desbout MD. Contains 7 sheets of drawings of instruments and appliances and illustrations of how they are used.

Letters from Sir Robert Moray to his friend Alexander Bruce, Earl of Kincardine, also known as 'The Kincardine Papers'. Bruce was sick of the ague in Bremen for part of this time, and the letters were written to alleviate the tedium of of Bruce's illness, hence ranging over topics which might not otherwise have been the subjects of correspondence. They include accounts of chemical experiments in his laboratory, his interest in magnetism, medicine in all its aspects, horticulture, fuel, whale fishing, its risks and profits, coal mining, water wheels and tide mills, stone quarrying and the various qualities of different stones, the pumping works needed for undersea coal mines at Bruce's home at Culross in Fifeshire, even to the trees whose wood was best for pipelines, and the diameter of the bore best suited to the purpose. Familiarity is shown with mathematical and surveying instruments, with music, and all sorts of mechanical devices and especially clocks and watches, more particularly the taking out of a patent in respect of a clock for use at sea for finding longitude. Bruce is advised on the choice of books over a wide range of subjects. Moray includes anecdotes to amuse his ailing correspondent; he describes his quiet life and is enthusiastic about many of his chemical experiments. Notable at the end of the letters Moray added what he described as his Masonic signature - a pentagram which also occurs in his crest.

This section contains papers relating to nursing and public health courses offered at Bedford College. The papers concern the administration of the courses including correspondence and minutes of committee meetings as well as a number of press clippings, pamphlets related to the course and sample certificates.
