Biographical history
A cattle market was first founded at Islington in 1833, but it proved unpopular and was not well attended, shoppers preferring to use Smithfield Market. However, Smithfield had become too large to be contained within its site. In 1852 the Smithfield Market Removal Act was passed and by 1855 the Corporation of London had purchased 75 acres of land at Copenhagen Fields in Islington, to be the site of the new Metropolitan Cattle Market for the sale of live cattle. The new market incorporated pens for cattle, sheep, calves and pigs as well as sheds for lairage and a dead meat market.
The market was discontinued on 1 Jan 1964 under the City of London (Various Pavers) Act 1963 Part II s. 5(1).

Corporation of London Records Office
Records of the Metropolitan Cattle Market, Islington, 1553-1964, including general administrative papers (inspector's report books, letter books, correspondence, report books, registers of drover's licences, bye-laws); posters; newspaper cuttings; photographs; annual reports of the Superintendent and Chief Veterinary Officer; legal papers; regulations regarding cattle driving; papers regarding the prevention and control of disease in cattle; papers relating to the City Meat Inspectors; accounts books; tenancy and rental agreements; rental ledgers; weighing and storage charge books; chill room charge books; lairage books and slaughtering charge books.
On the closing of the Market in Dec. 1963/Jan. 1964, the records which had accumulated there were examined with a view to selecting some for preservation in the Corporation of London Records Office. The bulk was transferred in Dec. 1963, and some additional classes added in June 1964 after a further visit. The aim of selection was to provide details of market trading and operation. The best records of trading and traders are in the Daily cash receipts and the charge books; further details of throughout are in the analysis on abstract books. Monthly returns for 1885, 1892 - 1894 have been retained as that period is not covered by the Daily Cash receipts; and for 1895, 1900 and 1905 as a means of comparison with existing Daily cash receipts.
