Memoirs from the internment of Hugo Rosenstock during 1940 and 1941. This collection consists of two items: an original illustrated account of life as an internee of an internment camp on Douglas, Isle of Man, 1940-1941 and an undated typescript family history by another family member. The first item comprises a series of individual sketches of camp life mostly in verse form, which have subsequently been bound together and foliated. There is a contents page, though no introduction completes the volume.

Copies of correspondence, 26 Apr 1946-21 Nov 1988, mostly from Hermann Maas, a German protestant minister, to Paul and Martha Rosenzweig, two siblings, Jewish 'Mischlinge' emigrés, whom Maas helped to save from the Nazis.

Papers concerning South America as a haven for refugees from Nazi Germany, 1937, comprise a series of reports regarding emigration possibilities to Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay for German Jews, by Bruno Weil.

Papers of Hugo and Gretel Klein, 1942, comprise translations and copies of the last letters written by Hugo and Gretel Klein of Bad Neustadt, to their children, who they sent to the USA for safety during World War Two.

Papers of Zentralvereinigung österreichische Emigranten, 1939, comprise two newsletters. The first, newsletter 3, describes the position of Austrian emigrants in war time; the internment of men aged 17-65; the reporting of women to the police to be finger-printed and the situation regarding re-joining the French forces. The second, newsletter 4, appeals for help to Austrians from neutral countries; reports on the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees on internees; reports on the position of emigrants in other countries and appeals to all Austrians to register with the Zentralvereinigung.

Papers of Hampstead Garden Suburb Care Committee for Refugee Children, 1938-[1939], comprise two alphabetical series of cards detailing the children's particulars and another cancelled series of the same, these are arranged alphabetically and concern German and Austrian Jewish refugee children, many with passport-size photographs attached, [1939]; index cards giving details of sponsors, sometimes specifying a child, 1938; index cards giving name and address of individuals with whom children lodged, including details about children and maintenance costs, [1939] and a Hampstead Garden Suburb Care Committee for Refugee Children form for potential sponsors, [1939].

Papers of Siegfried Kessler, a Czech Jewish exile in London, 1939-1944, chiefly correspondence between organisations and individuals, shedding light on the conditions for Czech Jews in Czechoslovakia in the early years of the Second World War and the processes involved in Jewish emigration from Czechoslovakia.

Papers of Club 1943, [1970s-1980s], comprise a 40th anniversary report of Club 1943 including a list of all the lectures given, arranged alphabetically by name of speaker, 1983; printed leaflet detailing the activities and membership of the club, [1970s-1980s], and a handwritten and typescript history of the club by J Lesser, [1970s-1980s].

Papers concerning conditions in Europe for Jews, 1940-1946, comprise a typescript copy of a diary written by a Jewish refugee from Berlin, describing life in Belgium during the occupation, 1944; copies of extracts from Luxemburg newspapers regarding press freedom; postcard of the Luxemburg Synagogue, which was burned down in 1940, 1940-[1945] and many typescript reports concerning conditions for Jews, notably including a report on the effect of the ceasefire agreement between Germany and France on people in the French camps and also on Jews in the occupied and unoccupied zones of France.

Papers of refugee organisations, 1930s, comprise various reports and papers concerning refugees, notably including the Council for German Jewry's Report for 1937; papers regarding application for asylum in the USA and South Africa and a periodical entitled 'Information Service', issued by the International Bureau for the Right of Asylum and Aid to Political Refugees, concerning refugees from Nazi Germany in France.

Archives du Comité international de la Croix-Rouge collection, 1939-1961, comprises files, reports and correspondence on the following subject areas: Jews (various dossiers); relief and questions of principle; camps; appeals; emigration; High Commissioner for Refugees; Jewish organisations; deportations; projects; investigations; case files; visits to camps and ghettos; special mission in Iraq.

Papers of the Central British Fund for World Jewish Relief, 1933-1965, detail the work of the CBF in shelters, hostels, internment camps, schools and foster homes, and also contain information on the finances of the fund. The collection notably include CBF minutes of its committees, finance, reports from individuals, and also a complete run of country files detailing the fund's work abroad; records of the Jewish Committee for Relief Abroad and other relief organisations, 1941-1953; records of the Children's Refugee Movement and the Jewish Refugees Committee; files on various other organisations which were involved with the work of the CBF to a greater or lesser extent, including the Agudas Israel World Organisation.

Letters from Iris Murdoch to her friend, civil servant Leo Pliatzky dating from 1943 to 1978. Some of the letters are from the Second World War when Pliatzky was serving in the army and Murdoch was based at the Treasury, and then later at the UNRRA. Many of the later letters are confirming arrangements to meet up. With some accompanying documents including a photograph and press cuttings.

Letters sent from Iris Murdoch to French author and poet Raymond Queneau, dating from 1946 to 1975. Iris met Queneau while doing war work with the UNRRA, and enjoyed a regular correspondence with him. She claimed that she owed much of her writing to her friendship with Queneau, and dedicated her first novel 'Under the Net' to him. The letters cover a number of topics including the early days of Murdoch's writing and philosophical views, her work with the UNRRA, and early relationships.

The records reflect the organisation's work in:

• Education (this includes educating employers and individuals of what was existing legal provision for maternity, but also education related to campaigning to reduce inequality in maternity provision, including lobbying government and trade unions for key changes in maternity provision);

Records, 1935-1992, of the League for Democracy in Greece and associated bodies. Pre-1945 material includes a set of the Balkan Herald, 1935-1940, and surviving papers, 1943-1945, of the League's predecessor, the Greek United Committee, and one of its supporters, E Athanassoglou. Notably there are proofs of Sir Compton Mackenzie's The Wind of Freedom (published in London, 1944) and a photocopy of a telegram from Winston Churchill prohibiting favourable mention of EAM-ELAS by the BBC, 1944. The papers of the League itself date from 1945 to 1975 and include a large collection of press cuttings covering all British and some foreign press references to Greece during the period of the League's activity, with some later cuttings concerning Greece to 1992; material produced by the Greek News Agency including the Weekly Survey of Greek News and later monthly surveys, covering Greek and foreign press output and the Free Greek Radio Broadcasts, complete from November 1946 to September 1953 and January 1969 to January 1974 but otherwise incomplete, the contents of particular value for the period of the Civil War, 1947-1949, as they form a rare source for the broadcasts of Radio Free Greece; and eight volumes of the League's own duplicated information and organizational circulars. There are copies of all official British reports on Greece: TUC (Citrine), Legal Mission, March 1946 Election Observers, All-Party Parliamentary Delegation (1946); a fairly complete collection of Hansard for parliamentary references to Greece; reports of the UN Commission for observing the Balkans (1947-1950); daily broadcasts of the Greek refugee radio at Bucharest, 1970-1974; a large collection of pamphlets, leaflets and news bulletins, British and foreign; a large collection of material from similar organisations in other countries and from Greek refugee committees; and specialist journals. Over 280 files of the League's correspondence and information material cover its various campaigns. Over 23 files represent other organisations which donated material to the League's archives: British Branch of the Patriotic Anti-Dictatorial Front (PAM), Campaign for the Release of All Political Prisoners in Greece, European-Atlantic Action Committee on Greece, Greek Committee against Dictatorship. The papers include an important collection of archive material, arising from the League's work to stimulate British parliamentary action, particularly regarding persecution, on Greek government repression, Law 375/1936, the Emergency Measures Act of June 1946, Law 509/1947 on 'subversion', the operation of the special courts-material and the security committee, and the conditions in prisons and concentration camps, including dossiers on the cases of individual prisoners, supplemented by thesis material on Greek political legislation since 1921. There is a card index of junta detainees; material from the prisons and concentration camps, including two volumes of smuggled appeals (some in microscopic writing); and personal files on individual political prisoners and concentration camps detainees, 1945-1964, 1967-1974. A small library contains unusual publications of the Greek left. Other material comprises a photographic collection, in 18 albums, on occupation, resistance, liberation, civil war, prisons, prisoners, concentration camps, Greek refugee children, and activities abroad; loose photographic items; four reels of film including a Czech film of evacuated Greek children, c1949; and a collection of organisational stamps. Post-1975 material relates to the League's successor, the Friends of Democracy in Greece. Subjects covered by the Archive include the day-to-day evolution of the Civil War, 1947-1949; Greek political legislative and administrative measures; conditions in the prisons and concentration camps; the Greek trade unions; the 'kidnapped' or 'evacuated' children; the Greek political refugees in Eastern Europe; the operations of Greek anti-junta groups in Western Europe and the United States, 1967-1974; attitudes and action of the British Labour movement (Labour Party and trade unions) in regard to Greece, 1945-1974; individual political prisoners and concentration camp detainees; action regarding Greece in Western European countries, Australia, Canada, and the United States; and the operation of pressure groups (from the League's organisational material and correspondence with Members of Parliament and trade unionists).

Draft case studies used by B L Jacobs in his book East African administration, published in Entebbe, Uganda, by the Government Printer [1965]. The book was impounded and burnt by the Ugandan police. Papers of Edgar Duchin, 1930s-1940s, comprise circulars, reports, minutes and memoranda of the Refugee Joint Consultative Committee, Central Refugee Committee and the Central Office of Refugees concerning tribunals, employment, allowances, welfare and communication with Germany; agenda, minutes and reports of the National Council of Civil Liberties with respect to refugee matters; papers of the Haldane Society including Duchin's draft report of the Sub-Committee on the Law Relating to Aliens; information sheets and other papers of the organisation Democratic Aid, concerned with the rights of interned aliens, specifically immigrants from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia who were politically active in Left Wing politics and were subsequently interned in Great Britain, includes transcripts of interviews with Otto Beuer, Karl Kreibich, Ludwig Freund and Anton Rudal; correspondence regarding individual cases in which Duchin was involved as a solicitor; minutes of meetings, Parliamentary Debates and correspondence regarding distribution of Nazi assets and a collection of miscellaneous papers including minutes of various committees including the Friendly Aliens Protection Committee and reports of various organisations on various matters including Council for German Jewry, 1938.

Comprising early family documents including a will of 1864 from the Stern family, death notices and certificates of mostly Stern family members and travel pass for Emil Neumann, dated 1922; personal papers of Ludwig Neumann including passports and id cards (unnumbered) amongst which is a Reisepass of the Third Reich stamped with the letter 'J'; copy birth and death certificates, membership cards of the Reichsbund Jüdischer Frontsoldaten (National League of Jewish Combatants) and death notices; personal papers and correspondence of Dina Neumann and Luise Elkisch Neumann including passports and identity cards, testimonials; correspondence from Nazi authorities and British authorities; 'Familienstammbuch' (document registering a marriage) of Richard Elkisch; English hate-mail received around the time of naturalisation, c 1947; personal papers and correspondence of Ludwig Neumann, mostly relating to the re-establishment of the company, Neumann and Mendel in Mönchengladbach. Papers of Bern Brent and Otto Bernstein, comprise a typescript translation by Bern Brent of his father's experiences in the late 19th century of growing up in Elberfeld and Kassel prior to moving to Berlin including descriptions of life growing up in late 19th century Elbersfeld and Kassel (-/1); life in turn of the century Germany and during the First World War (-/2) and his experiences as an inmate of Theresienstadt (-/3). Bern Brent, the depositor, provides us with an account of his experiences on the ship, the 'Dunera', bringing refugees from Europe to Australia where he made his home (-/4).

Personal correspondence of Anita Lasker-Wallfisch with family members, documenting in part the experiences of Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and her sisters in Bergen Belsen concentration camp and in England, 1945, and the experiences of their parents prior to transportation to their deaths, close to the Lublin Ghetto, 1942.

Papers concerning Bernhard Baer, 1984, comprise biographical notes regarding his experiences through World War One and its aftermath, his escape from Nazi persecution to England and his career thereafter. Notes are divided into two parts: the first covering the years 1905-1948 and the second 1949-1983.

Papers of Jewish refugees in Great Britain, 1939-1944, comprise reports regarding the plight of refugees in Great Britain during World War Two, notably including circulars from the Central Refugee Committee on the enlistment of tradesmen into the army and the RAF and the establishment of a women's foreign legion and a report entitled 'Facts concerning attempted disaffection among Jewish and orthodox in the Polish army in Great Britain'.

Papers of Youth Aliyah workers, comprise typescript reports on the experiences of children who managed to escape Nazi occupied Europe and arrived in Palestine, 1944. The names of the children are represented as initials.

Report of transport of Jews from Düsseldorf to Minsk, 1941, comprises a certified copy of a report about the transport of Jews from Düsseldorf to Minsk, including Jews from Essen and Wuppertal, by Hauptmann der Schutzpolizei, Meurin. The report has the following sub-headings: description of the transport; description of the city and ghetto of Minsk; Russian POWs; return (to Düsseldorf) of the Transportkommando and recommendations.
