Biographical history
The National Life Assurance Society was formed at a meeting of prospective shareholders on 31 December 1829, and became a mutual in 1847. It established agencies internationally, as well as acquiring many from the takeover of the Whittington Life Assurance Company in 1894. It premises were at 2 King William Street until its merger with the Mutual Life Assurance Society to form the National Mutual Life Assurance Society in 1896.

The National Life Assurance Society was formed at a meeting of prospective shareholders on 31 December 1829, and became a mutual in 1847. It established agencies internationally, as well as acquiring many from the takeover of the Whittington Life Assurance Company in 1894. It premises were at 2 King William Street until its merger with the Mutual Life Assurance Society to form the National Mutual Life Assurance Society in 1896.
Given to the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library by the National Mutual in 2002 and were subsequently catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
National Life Assurance Society records comprise constitutional documents, minutes, annual reports and accounts, correspondence, accounts, reports, policy registers and books of tables. They include some series continued after the merger in 1896.
