Fonds-level description

Newgate Prison was in use from 1188 until 1902. During the 19th century, prison reformers such as Elizabeth Fry increasingly became indignant at the conditions in which women and children were held. The prison was knocked down in 1902 and the Old Bailey court presently stands in its place.
