Records of Collyer Bristow and Company, solicitors, 1781-1975. The catalogue has been divided into three sections. The first consists of records dealing with the administration of the company, and includes day books and clerks' time books; the second section deals with the financial records of the firm.

The third, and largest, section is concerned with clients' administration. Records in this section include lists of clients' papers held or returned by the firm, and registers recording probate, insurance, property transactions and periodical payments made to a third party on behalf of the client.

Records of the Court of the Chief Rabbi, London Beth Din, 1904-1988. The bulk of the archive transferred to London Metropolitan Archives are the administrative papers and general correspondence of the Court, and in particular that of the Clerks and Registrar. There are also files concerning consultations the Beth Din undertook with the Government on the Matrimonial and Family Proceedings Bill in the 1980s. Some correspondence and rough notes of the individual Dayanim and records relating to work done with refugees in the Second World War have also been deposited.

Records of J Lyons and Company Limited, food manufacturers and caterers, 1891-1995. The archives reflect all aspects of the company's history. There are some of the usual company records relating to management, shareholding and administration, but the collection is particularly strong in what may be termed ephemera. There are hundreds of photographs, from 1887 up to the present day, a few films and videos, and large collections of press cuttings, advertisements, menus and even a set of lithographs which were commissioned by the company after the Second World War as a way of brightening up Lyons Corner Houses.

Minutes and accounts of the Hackney Carriages Proprietors Benevolent Fund, later the Hackney Carriage Proprietors' Provident Institution. The minute books give details of the general administration of the Fund. They include descriptions of individual cases of hardship.

The Hackney Carriages Proprietors Benevolent Fund appears, as its name suggests, to have been open to proprietors of hackney carriages only rather than to all hackney carriage drivers. Clearly, however, many proprietors of only a few hackney carriages would also have been engaged in driving their own vehicles.

Among the items recorded in the minute books of the Fund can be found details of ordinary members including brief professional details of individuals wishing to join the Fund, names of members or dependants to whom regular payments were made, and brief reports on the circumstances of member or dependants on their first application for a grant. There are also brief notices of the deaths of members.

The biggest draw-back of these minute books is that they are not indexed and therefore speculative searches are likely to take a long time.

Records of Maudslay Sons and Field Ltd, marine and mechanical engineers and boiler makers, 1889-1904, consisting of agendas and draft minutes of directors' meetings and meetings of shareholders, cash books, sales records, production records and wages records.

Records of the Union of Post Office Workers, comprising records of several local branches of the Union and an interesting variety of branch newsletters and journals. These reflect the wide range of activities which once came under the Post Office, such as the cable room branch and the telephonists branch; and also include mutual benefit societies and benevolent funds.

Records of Woods Road School, Southwark, comprising three photographs of staff, 1924, Westminster College Amateur/Association Football Team, 1904/1905, and of the school, 1920s.

Records of Brown Brothers, ironmongers, 1943-1969, comprising financial accounts; price lists and catalogues of tools, of locks, latches, keys and blanks, lock furniture, door furniture, door closers, hand tools, cutlery and adhesives.

Records of Cowtan and Sons Limited, decorators and upholsterers, 1881-1959. The records consist of ledgers and accounts rendered to customers. Unfortunately the early records from 1790 have disappeared. The gap in the series of accounts rendered between 1937 and 1945 is the result of war-time losses of records.

Records of Justice and Pattenden, solicitors, 1849-1935. Records of the firm include day books, letter books, bill books and one account book. Clients' papers include deeds relating to property, mainly in London and family and estate papers.

Records of James Lock and Company including series of day books (1781-1969, with gaps) and order books (1805-1998, with gaps). There were always two order books in use at any one time, one in the shop and one in the office, and as a result the dates overlap in many volumes. There is also a series of rough order books, called waste books (1798-1819), and special order books series for ladies' hats, for hunting wear and foreign and export orders. There are product statistics for 20th century. Very few product drawings, or fabric samples are included (for samples for special orders 1995-1998 see B/LK/422).

All these series contain similar elements of information, namely the customer's name and address, description of hat ordered and the total cost.

The collection also contains financial records, including ledgers, cash books, customer accounts and bad debts which summarise outstanding payments due from customers; staff salaries (1927-1954) (B/LK/619) and R Lincoln's executors account (B/LK/254).

Records of May May and Merriman, solicitors, 1711-1948, collected by the solicitors in the course of their work, comprising deeds and legal documents relating to the following estates or families: Allpress; Bacon; Chapple; Trustees of late Henry Clark; Captain Earl; Harvey; Morgan/Gooch; Newman; Pearson Trustees; Popham; Harper; General Popham; and Richards. Documents relate to property, financial dealings, marriages, bequests, bills and share dealing.

Records of Merry and Company, saddlemakers, 1883-1951, including letter books, ledgers, account books, wages books, order books containing clients' names, notes of their requirements (whips, racing equipment, sporting gear, etc.) and many specimens of coloured silks, order book for jockeys' race caps, and correspondence.

Records of Spalding and Hodge, stationers, 1781-1911; and subsidiary or merged companies including Busbridge and Hodge, papermakers and Suttaby and Company, booksellers. Also records of the Stationers' Book Society. The records include business agreements, legal documents relating to properties, wages books, cash books, stock books, bills, rules and regulations for staff, letters patent, brochures about Spalding and Hodge and their history, inventories, correspondence and price lists. Stationers' Book Society records comprise minutes, accounts, and an address by Thomas Spalding.

Records of Smith Kendon Limited, 1826-1987. The collection mainly comprises the papers of Donald Smith and his capacity as Managing Director and Chairman of Smith Kendon Limited, including papers relating to the formation of the business such as articles of partnership and certificates of registration; deeds and other legal documents relating to property owned by the company; insurance policies; inventories; correspondence; minutes of meetings; Donald Smith's business diaries; sales figures; financial accounts; papers relating to stock and stock control; papers relating to sales; papers relating to products including recipe books; advertising; reports; staff records and papers relating to the Second World War.

Personal papers of Joseph Baxter, teacher, including essays on 'My Future Life' written by some of his pupils; retirement certificate; and photographs of staff and pupils at unidentified schools.

Records of Putnam and James, butchers, 1878-1903, including three daily order books for the butcher's shop, giving names, addresses, order placed and weight; bills and estimates for work to be done.

Records of the New River Company which were separated from the main collection and used for exhibitions, including minutes; papers of the Surveyor; papers of the Engineer; negotiations for the supply of water; property papers; correspondence; reports; royal charters; agreements; legal papers; newspaper cuttings; papers relating to shares; contracts and specifications of works; and papers relating to staff.

Records of the Insurance Committee for the County of London, 1912-1948, and the Inner London Executive Council, 1948-1974. The records consist of bound, printed minutes which include agenda, reports and appendices for both the Insurance Committee for the County of London, the Inner London Executive council and its constituent committees and joint committees. Most of the series of minutes are complete.

The records within this section comprise those items which do not technically belong within the United Synagogue or its member synagogues or related charities and societies. They consist largely of trading accounts of various Jewish merchants, and accounts of the Beth Hamedrash, Chief Rabbi and small Jewish bodies.

Minutes of the Council and of Branch Meetings of the Metropolitan Branch of the Society of Medical Officers of Health.

Records of George Brown, chandler, 1821-1843, comprising letter book dated 1821-1842, which contains information on Brown's business dealings including much comment on the state of shipping at various times, many references to steam vessels as early as 1821, and a large number of letters and memoranda relating to the seizure by the Portuguese of the steamship 'Lord of the Isles' in which Brown had an interest and subsequent attempts to get redress.

Also a memoranda book, 1833-1843, mainly recording brief memoranda of letters sent and received from 'George' or about 'George' who would appear to have settled in Canada and made attempts at farming and business. Evidence suggests that 'George' was the son of George Brown who was joined for a while in Canada by his mother and sisters. The book gives considerable information concerning shipping to and from North America; settlers in Canada and their acquisition of land; early government of Canada; references to the Canada Company, an account of 'stores required for a settler going to New Zealand' and details of goods sent out to 'George'.

Papers, 1796-1904, collected by the solicitors in the course of their work, comprising deeds and legal documents relating to properties in Islington, Kensington, Paddington, Regents Park, Hammersmith and Twickenham; including probate of will, assignment, abstract of title and deeds of covenant.

The packet report series (POST 39 and 41) comprises reports to the Postmaster General from the Secretary to the Post Office, on the packet boat service and overseas mail arrangements. These are the surviving reports from those listed in POST 41.

POST 39 therefore consists of the actual Reports which are still in existence, with any enclosures. POST 41 consists of indexed volumes containing a copy of every Report submitted to the Postmaster General (including those which have since been destroyed) and is the only guide to the contents of POST 39. The Postmaster General's decision on each case is recorded. Examples of incidents recorded in the reports include the capture of packet ships, possibly due to pirates, smuggling of dry goods, loss of crew, terms and conditions of ship hire, victualling of crew and route changes and times.

In 1811 a parallel series entitled Packet Minutes (POST 29 and POST 34) was created. Cases for the attention of the Postmaster General were sometimes recorded in both series, but at other times in only one of the two series. Upon the cessation of the Report series POST 29 and POST 34 continued alone.

This series contains records on all aspects of The Post Office's welfare policy and its implementation. It mainly consists of reports and reviews, minutes and annual reports, correspondence, policies, leaflets and guides, and newsletters. These relate to matters such as Health and Safety in the workplace, refreshment facilities, general health and well being of employees, work related issues such as equal opportunites and harassment, Post Office benevolent societies, staff awards and recreational clubs.

The archive consists of the records of the Female Middle Class Emigration Society (FMCES): Annual reports: May-Oct 1862, Nov 1862-Jul 1872, Jan 1880-Dec 1882, Jan 1883-Dec 1885; correspondence (in the form of letter-books); pamphlets.

This archive consists of minutes of board meetings (1947-1973), reports and conference resolutions (1929-1966), conference papers (1952-1957), constitutions and charters (1929-1970), correspondence files of president and honorary secretary (1947-1974); incomplete series of the publication Open Door (1929-1938), circular letters (1949-1959), leaflets and pamphlets (1929-1964), headed stationery, reports and publications of other organisations including United Nations commissions and International Labour Organisation. Most of the papers originate from the organisation's Honorary Secretaries.
