In his clinical career he was involved with the care of patients, teaching and research, and subsequently with development of protection techniques and the setting of standards and their application.
Reprints, publications and manuscripts of Sir Edward's published articles which originally formed part of this collection were disposed of by his son Charles Pochin.
The majority of these surviving papers of Sir Edward Pochin were donated unconditionally as a gift to the Wellcome Library by his son, Charles, and daughter, Sally, in February 1991. The accession formed part of the contents of three filing cabinets which Sir Edward had kept at his home. File A.3 was transferred from the Lewis papers in the Wellcome Library (PP/LEW, acc 56) which had been deposited by Pochin in 1977.
Papers of Sir Edward Eric Pochin, 1940-1989. The collection in no way reflects the entirety of Sir Edward's life's work; he may have discarded much himself when he retired officially. For the most part, the papers suggest that he had decided to keep only those of personal value, a relatively few relating to his clinical research on iodine isotopes and the thyroid gland, and those concerning his current working interest at the time of retirment. This was the 'Index of Harm': in the last ten or so years of his life he was primarily engaged in amassing vast amounts of data and statistics for the purposes of quantifying the risks and harm resulting from exposure to radiation as well as from occupational injuries. Also present are correspondence with Sir Thomas Lewis, 1940-1945, and records of research and treatments in the Medical Research Council Clinical Research Department at University College Hospital, London, 1947-1970s.
The collection is arranged into sections as follows:
A. Correspondence
B. Patients and treatments: B.1-5 General; B.6-13 Iodine therapies.
C. Radiation: C.1-10 Nuclear power plants; C.11-26 Population/occupational exposure to radiation; C.27-47 'Index of Harm'; C.48 'Fractiles'.
D. Risk Assessment: D.1-3 Royal Society Study Group on Assessment and Perception of Risk; D.4-6 'Risk' files.
E. Research: E.1-2 Animal experiments; E.3-12 Medical/clinical.
The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.
Photocopies/photographs/microfilm are supplied for private research only at the Archivist's discretion. Please note that material may be unsuitable for copying on conservation grounds, and that photographs cannot be photocopied in any circumstances. Readers are restricted to 100 photocopies in twelve months. Researchers who wish to publish material must seek copyright permission from the copyright owner.
