These materials were collected by the Research Department of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Some of the materials were obtained for the Department by staff at the British Embassy in Warsaw.

Copies of documents, newsletters, journal articles, reprints, press summaries and press cuttings re the political and economic situation in Poland during the rise of the independent trade union Solidarity, the imposition of martial law and its aftermath. The papers mainly come from non official Polish sources, many issued by Solidarity or by their support groups in the west but there are a few papers from the official Polish or the Western media, 1978-1989 (mainly 1980-1985)
