Papers of William Maiden, 1812-1824, comprising a cutting from the National Register containing a letter to the editor from T Paxton, on 'Mr Tipple's Extraordinary Case', 26 Jul 1812; a copy of the second edition (1813) of the original publication by Maiden titled An Account of a Case of Recovery after an Extraordinary Accident, by which the shaft of a chaise had been forced through the thorax. The label on the front was written by Sir Richard Owen. Including an autograph letter from William Clift to William Maiden, 18 Feb 1824 and an original drawing by William Clift; draft title pages for the re-publication of the Shaft Case by William Maiden, including notes on Mr Tipple's health for the 10 years following the accident, and an account of the post-mortem; manuscript drafts for the introduction of the re-publication of the case; manuscript containing notes on Tipple's health after the accident. These notes were probably written by J W K Parkinson, Mr Tipple's physician after the accident, and his name is written in pencil at the top right on the first page; draft manuscript notes on the Post Mortem of Mr Tipple, 1823; a letter from James Parkinson to Sir William Blizard, 26 Mar 1823 concerning observations made by William Clift on the post-mortem of Mr Tipple; draft manuscripts of a commentary on the case by Sir William Blizard; 22 letters from William Maiden to William Clift, Sir William Blizard and Mr Carpenter concerning the re-publication of the case details, the plates to be published with it, and the procedure for presenting copies of the work to various gentlemen and institutions. Papers of Sir Astley Paston Cooper, early 19th century, comprising a draft paper written by Cooper, intended to be the introduction to a collective publication on the diseases of the thoracic duct. It is not signed by Cooper, but is thought to be in his handwriting.

The papers include laboratory notebooks dealing with Bawden's research on various plant viruses, and in particular his collaborative work with N.W. Pirie and with A.A.P. Kleczkowski. There is also a detailed exchange of correspondence with Pirie on research in progress, 1937-1940. (Pirie moved to Rothamsted as Virus Physiologist in 1940 when Bawden became Head of the Plant Physiology Department.) There is a wide range of correspondence, with individuals and institutions. It deals with scientific research and problems including viral nomenclature, lectures, conferences, publications, Bawden's reports on research projects, grant applications and appointments. The correspondence relating to Bawden's overseas visits as adviser or lecturer is mainly after 1958 and is sometimes accompanied by Bawden's reports.

The papers are extensive, relating to almost every aspect of Blackett's career in science and public life. There is biographical and personal material including large numbers of letters of congratulation received on the occasion of the various scientific and public awards and honours with which Blackett's achievements were recognised. There are records of his work on particle disintegration, cosmic rays, astrophysics and magnetism in the form of laboratory notebooks, working papers, correspondence, lectures, publications and broadcasts. There is documentation of his activities on various defence projects and as a member of government committees before, during and after the Second World War. Blackett's political interests are represented by material relating to the Association of Scientific Workers, Labour Party discussion groups on science and technology policy and the Ministry of Technology instituted after the Party's 1964 electoral victory. There are records of a wide range of science-related interests such as the history of science and technology, science, education and government, and nuclear weapons and disarmament, and of his overseas activities including material relating specifically to India and that concerned with matters more generally affecting developing countries.

A few lacunae in the surviving material have been identified. There are no documents relative to Blackett's service with the National Research and Development Corporation or the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and, of his correspondence during the Second World War, only that for 1942 survives.

Two letters addressed to 'Mrs Chambers', 3 Nov 1797, 19 Jan 1798, concerned with works on composition.

The records of the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) at King's College London Institute of Psychiatry are made up of editorial committee papers, data tables, statistical data, notes of meetings and other correspondence and papers, 1986-1995. These include correspondence with Geoff Der of the Social Psychiatry Unit at the Institute, 1988-1995; editorial committee papers, 1986-1994; notes on international meetings arranged by Geoff Der relating to SCAN, 1989; field trial data in hard copy and floppy disks, [1989]; training manuals, reviews of statistics and other supporting literature, 1987-1991.

Papers of Geoffrey Bullough, [1957-1975] contain typescript proofs of publications edited by Bullough. The collection contains annotated galley proofs from Bullough's Narrative and dramatic sources of Shakespeare (Columbia U.P, 1957 and later editions), notably including two copies of The Tradegie of Antonie by Robert Garnier, translated by Mary Herbert (1595) and two copies of The Troublesome raigne of King John (anonymous, 1591); carbon copy of The Taming of the Shrew [edited 1957-1975], which includes pencil annotation 'check this with original text'; annotated photocopy of Rosalynde. Euphues Golden Legacie by Thomas Lodge, (1592) [edited 1957-1975], perhaps suggesting that Bullough intended to edit this work; University of London BA examination paper for internal and external students in English, 1974 and University of London BA general examination paper for external students in Middle English 1300-1525, 1974.

Papers of William James Entwistle collection, [1945-1947] comprising correspondence to and from Entwistle regarding the Chronicle of John I of Portugal and also includes a draft edition of the first 136 chapters,[1945-1947].

The correspondence section notably includes a letter, in Portuguese script, from Florentino dos Santos Cardoso, of Évora Public Library, to William James Entwistle, 1945, concerning the Chronica de El Rei D. João I by Fernão Lopes and a reproduction made and held by the Évora Public Library. Florentino dos Santos Cardoso asks Entwistle whether he would interetsed in purchasing a complete reproduction. Correspondence also includes a letter from Entwistle to Edgar Prestage (1881-1949), regarding the printing of the final chapters of Chronicle of John I of Portugal, 1945; letter from Entwistle to Prestage regarding the progress of the printing of a complete copy of Chronicle of John I of Portugal, suggesting the proofs are the 'pre first edition of book which will never appear', 1947.

The collection also includes a copy of the unpublished text of Chronicle of John I of Portugal [1945-1946], written by Fernão Lopes 1380-1459.

Papers, 1946-1994, relating to philosophy and Lloyd's academic career and publications, including letters relating to publishing contracts for Form and universal in Aristotle (Liverpool University School of Classics, 1981), and The anatomy of neoplatonism (Clarendon, Oxford, 1990). Lecture notes, [1960-1970], on various philosophical subjects, including Plato, and the History of Philosophy. Papers of Edgar Prestage, 1881-1949, largely relating to his work on the history of Portugal, 16th-19th centuries.
