Dr Hugo Rast was a Swiss national who was physician to the German Hospital, London. Born, 1891; Studied medicine in Berne, Lausanne, Paris and London; qualified MD, Berne, 1916; took up post at German Hospital London, 1919; FRCS, LRCS, 1822; Honorary Surgeon to the German Hospital, 1925; Senior Surgeon, German Hospital, 1938; Medical Superintendent, German Hospital, 1939-1945; Chairman of the Mixed Medical Commission for Prisoners of War (under the War Office) and for Civilian Internees (under the Home Office), 1941-1945; Chairman for Mixed Medical Commission for the European Theatre of War, USA War Department, 1944; Medical Adviser to various Embassies and Legations in London; Honorary Consultant to the North East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board; died, 1982.

Received from Dr Rast's widow as a gift over several accessions, 2001-2004

Papers of Hugo Rast, 1920-1976, including wartime diaries (with transcripts); papers relating to his activities as neutral member of the Mixed Medical Commission on Prisoners of War in the UK, with a little personal material and photographs, etc, of the German Hospital, also a selection of his files on distinguished patients.

A. Personal and miscellaneous, 1920-1976; B. Diaries and diary transcripts, 1940-1945; C. Mixed Medical Commission and related material, 1940-1945; 1 Correspondence with War Office, Swiss Legation, etc; 2 Tours of POW camps; 3 Miscellaneous material; D. Patients, 1924-1974.

Application for access to restricted materials must be made for much of this collection, which is otherwise available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts. Some items are closed.
