James Augustus Rooth studied his degree at Oxford. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, and a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians, London, in 1901, training at St George's Hospital. Rooth was a Civil Surgeon in the South Africa Field Force; Senior Honorary Surgeon at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford; and a Colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was the doctor present at the birth of the conjoined twins, Violet and Daisy Hilton, known as 'The Brighton Twins', born in Brighton, in 1908. Rooth's last entry in the Medical Directory was in 1963.

Papers of James Augusts Rooth, 1908-1929, comprising a volume titled The Brighton Twins, A Record by James A Rooth, MRCS. containing photographs, press cuttings, correspondence and ephemera relating to the birth and life of the conjoined twins, Violet and Daisy Hilton (The Brighton Twins), born in Brighton in 1908. The twins were joined at base of the spine and buttocks. Rooth was the doctor present at their birth, and the midwife was Miss Hilton, who became the foster mother of the twins. The volume also includes press cuttings, articles and photographs of other conjoined twins and malformed individuals of interest to Rooth.
