The church was designed by Hugh Smith, in 1846. The 'Fitzrovia' area lies to the west of Bloomsbury, growing piecemeal from the mid-eighteenth century onwards. It began to be known as Fitzrovia in the 1940s. The parish was united with Saint Saviour's, London Street in 1913. It was badly damaged by a flying bomb on 25 March 1945. Later still, it was united with All Souls, Langham Place, Saint Marylebone (P89/ALS).

Records were salvaged from the derelict church of St John the Evangelist, Golding Street, Stepney, and deposited in the London County Record Office in 1960. Further records were deposited by the Vicar of St Pancras in 1961, and by the rector of All Souls, Langham Place, in 1964.
Records of the parish of Saint John the Evangelist, Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia, including registers of baptisms, confirmations and marriages; church services register and legal documents.
The records have been sorted into categories which reflect divisions between the different functions and operations of the parish and its administration. Order within these categories reflects chronology.
These records are available for public inspection, although records containing personal information are subject to access restrictions under the UK Data Protection Act, 1998.
