The Bishop of London was held to exercise responsibility for Anglican churches overseas where no other bishop had been appointed. He retained responsibility for churches in northern and central Europe until 1980, but his jurisdiction in southern Europe ceased in 1842 on the creation of the diocese of Gibraltar. In 1980, the Bishop of London divested himself of all overseas jurisdiction and a new diocese of 'Gibraltar in Europe' was established.

Davos, Switzerland, had a large English community due to the number of convalescent hospitals, particularly for those suffering from tuberculosis. The Colonial and Continental Church Society first sent a chaplain to Davos, Switzerland, in 1871. In 1878 a local hotelier donated a piece of land for the construction of an Anglican church to serve this community. The building was completed by 1883. By the 1970s the church was threatened with closure and demolition but was saved by the Swiss Federation of Free Protestant Churches.

These records were deposited in Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section by the Commonwealth and Continental Church Society in 1977 and 1985-6. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

Records of Saint Luke's Anglican Church, Davos, Switzerland; comprising chaplains' books, 1959-77 (Ms 15704); register of confirmations, 1951-75 (Ms 21471); scrapbook relating to the history of the chaplaincy, [1964] (Ms 21472); and books of counterfoils of baptism, 1928-1969, marriage, 1910-1928, and burial certificates, 1906-1925 (Ms 21661-3). They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff in 1978 and 1985-1986.
