Biografie

Fritz Saxl was born in Vienna and educated in Vienna and Berlin; librarian at the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg, and after Aby Warburg's death became Director of the Library (1929-1933); oversaw the Warburg Institute's move to London in 1933 and remained Director until his death in 1948; became a naturalized British subject in 1940 and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1944.

Personal Documents and Working Papers of Fritz Saxl, 1896-1948, including bibliographical notes, notebooks, drafts of lectures and articles. Topics covered include: Mithras; Pagan and Jewish Influences on Christian Art; Astrology; Cosmology; Illuminated Astrological and Mythological Manuscripts; Medieval Encyclopaedias; Science and Art; Venetian Art; Spanish Art; Art of the Reformation: Dürer; Holbein, Elsheimer, Rembrandt; Historiography and Aby Warburg.

Arranged in sections as follows: Personal Documents and Working Papers.

Archive material is accessible for the purpose of private study and personal research and within the supervised environment and restrictions of the Archive reading room. Access is with permission from the Institute Director and by prior appointment only. Potential users are advised to browse the Institute website and contact the Archivist, Dr des Claudia Wedepohl, before planning a visit. Access to individual items in the Warburg Institute Archives may be restricted under the Data Protection Act or the Freedom of Information Act.

research use only (working papers: up to 10% of any archive pressmark; correspondence by authors for whom the department doesn't hold copyright: up to 10% of the Institute's holdings).
