Edith How-Martyn (1875-1954) nee How, mathematician, suffragist and birth control campaigner, was an early member of the Women's Social and Political Union, one of the founders of the Women's Freedom League in 1907 and the first female member of the Middlesex County Council (1919-1922). She was also the founder of the Birth Control Information Centre in 1929 and remained active in this movement, along with establishing the Suffragette Fellowship in 1926. At the outbreak of the Second World War she moved to Australia and due to ill-health remained in that country until she died in 1954.

The Women's Library holds further notebooks and scrapbooks of Edith How Martyn in per personal papers (7EHM); as well as archives related to How-Martyn, containing items such as correspondence by her, including: Women's Freedom League (2WFL); Women's Tax Resistance League (2WTR); a number of letters by her are in the Autograph Letter Collection (9/01, 9/03, 9/08, 9/20 and others). Letters by How-Martyn can also be found in the archives of Hugh Franklin (7HFD), Mary Ann Rawle (7MAR). Several photographs of How-Martyn can be found in The Women's Library Photograph and Postcard Collections.

The Oriental and India Office Collections of the British Library hold the diaries and papers (1926-40) of How-Martyn (reference: MSS Eur D 1182). Her correspondence with Margaret Sanger is held in the University of New York's Margaret Sanger Papers Project archive. Further correspondence is in Eileen Palmer's papers related to birth control (c1930-40, reference Coll Misc 0639) held by the London University's British Library of Political and Economic Science. Her letters to Vida Goldstein are amongst the Bessie Mabel Rischbieth papers in the Australian National Library (Coll. 2004).
