John Sheffield was born on 8 September 1648. Sheffield served with the navy, rising to the rank of Vice Admiral for Yorkshire and Northumberland (1687-1689). He held several posts at the Royal Court and armed forces including Gentleman of the Bedchamber 1673-1682, Lord Chamberlain of the Household 1685-1688, Colonel of the Holland Regiment, 1673-1682 and 1684-1685. Sheffield also served as the Lord Lieutenant for the East Riding 1679-1682, North Riding 1702-1705 and 1711-1714 and Middlesex, 1711-1714. He was created Marquess of Normanby in May 1694 and Duke of the County of Buckingham and of Normanby in 1702. Sheffield died at Buckingham House in March 1721.

The Bodleian Library, Oxford University, has a copy of The character of a Tory in answere to that of a Trimmer (Ref: MS Eng misc c129); the Public Record Office, London, contains accounts of the Duke and Dowager Duchess of Buckingham, 1720-1731 (Ref: c105/20); Warwickshire County Record Office holds letters to Everard de Weede, Baron de Dyckvelt, 1689-1699 (Ref: CR2017, C8/29-33, 120); the British Library, London, contains letters to George, Elector of Hanover, and Sophia, Electress of Hanover, 1706-1711 (Ref: Stowe 222-224 and 241 passim), letters to Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham, 1702 (Ref: Add MS 29588 ff. 356-362), and letters to Sir Hans Sloane (Ref: Sloane 4060 ff. 327-334b); the centre for Kentish Studies has correspondence with Alexander Stanhope, 1693-1699 (Ref: U 1590/032); Nottingham University Library holds letters to William Bentinck, 1st Earl Portland, 1694 (Ref: PwA1151-58).
