Biographical history

Benjamin Slowman was a wine and spirit merchant, trading from 32 St Mary at Hill. A Citizen and member of the Company of Spectacle Makers, he was Common Councilman of the precinct of St Andrew Hubbard 1854-79, and from 1870 Deputy of Billingsgate Ward. He served as Master of the Spectacle Makers' Company in 1873.

Benjamin Slowman was a wine and spirit merchant, trading from 32 St Mary at Hill. A Citizen and member of the Company of Spectacle Makers, he was Common Councilman of the precinct of St Andrew Hubbard 1854-79, and from 1870 Deputy of Billingsgate Ward. He served as Master of the Spectacle Makers' Company in 1873.

Archives of his wine and spirit business were found in the church of St Mary at Hill, amongst the parish archives of St Mary at Hill and St Andrew Hubbard, and were deposited by the parish of St Mary at Hill in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1956 and 1967. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

The records of Benjamin Slowman, merchant, comprise an order book 1835-42; bought ledger, cash book and vouchers 1820-50; business correspondence 1823-51; and a release regarding the estate of Moses Lewvy, 1848.
