Born, 1915; read Modern Languages at University College London, 1934-1937, 1938-1939; foreign correspondent for the BBC from 1942; served in Vienna and later Berlin from the mid-1940s until the early 1950s; stationed in Cairo during the Suez Crisis (1956); served in Cape Town in the late 1950s; served in Rome from the 1960s until his retirement in the 1970s; chief Mediterranean correspondent; OBE, 1969; died, 1979.
