Papers of Sir Graham Eden Hamond, including three diaries, 1834 to 1838, and about one hundred letters, most of which are letters received by Hamond and copies or drafts of his replies during his period on the South American Station. There are a few earlier and later letters but all are from the year 1819 onwards, except for copies of two letters written by his father. His correspondents included Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) and Robert Dundas, 2nd Viscount Melville (q.v.).

There is nothing relating to his service as First Lord of the Admiralty.

Papers of Sir William Hannam Henderson. They consist of official service documents; a log, 1860 to 1866; a personal notebook, 1867 to 1869; an order book, 1873 to 1878; five out-letterbooks, 1889 to 1896, and accounts, estimates, memoranda, plans, personnel lists and proposed social reforms for Devonport Dockyard; also for this period, 1902 to 1905, are two out-letterbooks to the Admiralty. Among Henderson's letters received, dating from his schooldays to his death, are copies of those from Lloyd George, written during the First World War. Finally there are scrapbooks, photograph albums and news cuttings, 1847 to 1931, and proofs of his articles, including those published in the Naval Review between 1917 and 1924 entitled 'Admiralty and Command of the Sea'. In the Royal United Service Institution collection, now in this Museum, are some of Henderson's watch bills, a notebook, 1870 to 1880, and an order book for the CONQUEST, 1889 to 1891.

The large section of papers relating to the East Indian command includes letters from the Admiralty, Victualling and Transport Boards, as well as copies of correspondence with Sir Stamford Raffles (1781-1826). In addition there are extracts from logs of ships on the East Indies Station during Hood's command, including the MODESTE, 1810; HESPER, 1810; HMS CORNELIA, 1811; DORIS, 1811; PHAETON, 1812; HECATE, 1813; SALSETTE, 1813 to 1814. Finally, there are a number of Hood family papers, 1745 to 1817.

The collection contains items, including journals, official and private letters, and newspaper cuttings, relating to all of the above members of the family (please see individual biographical entries for further details of their careers).

Papers of Sir Geoffrey Thomas Phipps Hornby, [1858-1894]. Except for a few service papers and a letterbook, 1858 to 1870, the entire collection dates from 1865 onwards. The most important part of the collection is Hornby's official, semi-official and private correspondence, 1873 to 1894, in which many leading naval officers and other figures of the day are represented. There are also some letters written by Hornby and some correspondence of his wife and of his daughter, Mrs Egerton. Relating to Hornby's commands, there are official letterbooks for the years 1870 to 1874 and 1877 to 1880, memoranda and orders, 1865 to 1874 and 1877 to 1880, private letterbooks, 1865 to 1874, 1877 to 1878 and 1885 to 1891, and registers of telegrams received and despatched, 1877 to 1880. There are printed memoranda and papers relating to his time at the Admiralty, including the work of the Construction and Torpedo Committees.

Papers of Lionel Graham Horton Horton-Smith. They consist of twenty-eight volumes of pamphlets and newspaper cuttings, put together by Horton-Smith himself, on naval policy and the activities of the Imperial Maritime League, 1895 to 1913.

The papers cover the period, 1879-1916, and include papers on Howell's service as a correspondent for The Times in the Balkans, including photographs and newspaper cuttings, 1903; papers on Howell's training at Staff College, Quetta, India, and Staff College, Camberley, Surrey, including notes on Cavalry organization and tactics and on the establishment of FrontierIntelligence organization in India, 1904-1914; papers on service as Officer Commanding 4 Hussars, including Operational orders, accounts of Allied operations on Western Front, personal diaries and manuscript maps of Western Front trenches, 1914-1915; Operational orders from service as Brig Gen, General Staff Cavalry Corps, Western Front, 1915; official and semi-official correspondencefrom service as Chief of Staff, Salonika, including personal diaries, correspondence relating to attempts to secure Bulgarian entry in World War One on the Allied side, and correspondence relating to allegations of Howell leaking memoranda to a Suffragete newspaper called Britannia, 1915-1916. The papers of Howell's wife, Mrs Rosalind 'Linnett' Howell [nee Buxton], 1910-1966, include an account of Howell's life entitled, Philip Howell. A Memoir By His Wife(1942, London, George Allen & Unwin Ltd) and letters from Capt (Edward) Hugh Buxton and Maj (Abbot) Redmond Buxton [Rosalind 'Linnett' Howell's brothers], concerning Allied withdrawal from Anzac Cove and Sulva Bay, Gallipoli, Turkey, 1915-1916.

Papers of George Redmond Hulbert, comprising his correspondence, 1807 to 1823, with the Navy Pay Office, Navy Prize Office, Treasury, Greenwich Hospital, Doctors' Commons and naval officers. There are also accounts and lists of prizes, including some printed papers, 1793 to 1798. The collection provides detailed information on the procedure followed in the collection and distribution of prize money.

Professional papers relating to Hunt's involvement in the Royal College of General Practitioners, 1948-79, which he was fundamental in founding, including articles and correspondence published in the lay and medical press, correspondence, committee minutes and notes, covering his role proposing the College in 1951, his work as Honorary Secretary of the Steering Committee in 1952, and of the Foundation Council and then Council of the College, 1953-66, then as President, 1967-70, and during his remaining years, 1971-78, when he continued to be involved with the College's development; papers relating to his life peerage, as a member of the House of Lords, including correspondence, speeches and articles, 1973-83; papers relating to Hunt's other commitments to various institutions and societies, including St Bartholomew's Hospital, the British Medical Association, Royal Society of Medicine, Medical Society of London, the Armed Forces, Department of Health, and the Hunterian Society, as President, member or adviser, mostly articles produced as a result of his involvement with these bodies, 1932-74; and biographic material relating to his personal life, including his curriculum vitae, bibliography, personal notes, and publications resulting from his DM Thesis, undertaken at the Univeristy of Oxford in 1935, 1935-1988.

The collection represents the contacts through two centuries of a group of men and women of high distinction ramifying through the medical, legal and literary worlds. It forms a not unimportant fund of minor historical material, comprising more than a thousand letters from nearly five hundred writers.

The autograph letters are mounted in 10 large volumes: -

1. Letterbook of John Arbuthnot (1667-1735). The most interesting letters are those of Pope and Swift and their circle written in 1714 when the Queen's death involved the destruction of their political hopes. Letterbook of William Hunter (1719-1783). It includes letters from Tobias Smollett the novelist, from Dr. Johnson thanking Hunter for presenting his book to the King, and from Edward Gibbon 'proposing himself the pleasure of attending some of Dr. Hunter's Anatomical lectures.'

2. Hunter and Baillie family letters and reminiscences, including the letters written by John to William Hunter from active service in 1761-62; poems by Sophia Baillie, Jenner family letters.

   3. Letters to Matthew Baillie from the Royal Princesses. Letters of the Bentham family, including three from Jeremy Bentham. Autograph letter collection includes letters from Thomas Carlyle and Charles Dickens. 1735 - 1845

   The Hunter Baillie collection comprises also a number of manuscript books, the oldest of which is a commonplace book of the early eighteenth century, giving details of family history of the Hunters. Matthew Baillie's notebooks include: -

Journal of a tour in Europe in 1788 and A short memoir of my life, 1818. 'Some brief observations from my own experience upon a considerable number of diseases', in two volumes. n.d. With these are his casebooks, fee-books and other professional notes, including details of his attendance on King George III. Baillie records that his total annual fees mounted from £121 in 1792 to £9,995 in 1815.

Papers of Cpt Thomas Huskinsson. Most of the collection relates to his son, John Huskinsson , there is also an account of the early service of Thomas Huskinsson.

The majority of this correspondence is based around the following themes: James's work for the Ordnance Survey (particularly the book of maps and photographs produced by the OS of Jerusalem), James's investigation of the corrosion by sea water of the copper bottoms of ships, letters discusing George Biddell Airy's proposed system of projection and personal letters of invitation to James.

The majority of the photographs relate to 'The Wreck of the RHONE', and in particular, of a survivor of the shipwreck, a cabin boy called John Bailey. (The RHONE was a steam packet ship, built in London in 1865. It sank off the coast of the Virgin Islands in October 1867, after being struck by strong winds. Of the 197 people on board only 24 survived. The wreck of the RHONE is now regarded as one of the world's most famous wreck dives).

The sketchbook consists mostly of sketches of trilobites drawn whilst James was in Ireland and the notebook contains notes on military topics.

This collection consists of the personal and family correspondence of Sir Joshua Jebb, correspondence relating to prison matters, memoranda, accounts and papers relating to his work, printed material relating to prisons, family and personal papers and a family tree.

Papers on the surrender and occupation of Italy, 1943-1945, including typescript drafts, in English, German and Italian, of announcement by FM Hon Sir Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander, Supreme Allied Commander, Mediterranean Theatre of War, on the surrender of German and Fascist Republican forces in Italy, 1945; typescript memorandum entitled 'Note on documents taken from Mussolini by Italian partisans and handed to Brigadier Jeffries on May 18th 1945'.

Papers of Martyn Jerram including official service documents; logs, 1872 to 1877, 1884 to 1888; a diary, 1882; official and private letters and memoranda, relating mainly to the China command, 1913 to 1915. There are some papers for the Vitu expedition, 1890, and for Jerram's time in the Grand Fleet, 1915 to 1916, and a few post-Jutland reports, and some photograph albums.

Papers of Rowland Christopher Jerram, including journals, 1907-1914 and 2 large scrapbooks containing photographs, signals, orders and newspaper cuttings covering the first half of Jerram's career. Also present in the collection are 3 photograph albums, 1908-1932, and various letters, reports, newspaper cuttings, etc, relating to the major part of the Rear-Admiral's career, as well his civilian activities, such as his position as Commander of the St. John Ambulance in Cornwall, 1949-1958.

Papers of John Jervis, consisting of letters and copies of letters received from Lord Nelson, 1794 to 1804.

Papers of Peter Johnson, 1885-1973, documenting his life until the immediate post-war period. It includes school reports, family correspondence, documents relating to naturalisation, papers relating to his service in military intelligence, and papers relating to the former Jewish population in Hildesheim, where he was stationed at the end of the war.

Papers of Charles Johnstone, consisting of eighteen diaries, 1880 to 1897, 1890 and 1895 excepted, which describe all the major events of Johnstone's life in detail. His logs cover the years 1858 to 1864, 1866 to 1867 and 1871 to 1873. There are official letters among the loose papers as well as letterbooks, 1883, 1892 to 1894, 1896 to 1898, and many of these refer to Madagascar and to the Victoria and Camperdown collision; for the latter affair there is Johnstone's own vindication of his conduct. The printed papers, including news cuttings, refer to Borneo and Madagascar and to the education of naval officers.

Other correspondents include Lord Nelson, 1803, Earl St. Vincent, 1800 to 1809, Sir James Saumarez (1757-1836), 1807-1809, Sir Edward Pellew, 1811 to 1812, and Sir Richard Strachan (1760-1828), 1809. There are also official service documents and some relating to Greenwich Hospital and the Chatham Chest; some of these are retrospective, dating back as far as 1696.
