Biografie

The Church of St Nicholas Shambles was built off Newgate Street in the City of London sometime before 1196, next to an abattoir, and was demolished in 1547. The parish united with that of Christ Church Greyfriars, Newgate Street at the same time, and the endowments were transferred to St Bartholomew's Hospital by the charter of Henry VIII.

The Church of St Nicholas Shambles was built off Newgate Street in the City of London sometime before 1196, next to an abattoir, and was demolished in 1547. The parish united with that of Christ Church Greyfriars, Newgate Street at the same time, and the endowments were transferred to St Bartholomew's Hospital by the charter of Henry VIII.

Some of the parish archives were probably acquired by St Bartholomew's Hospital subsequent to the transfer of the endowments of St Nicholas Shambles parish to the Hospital in 1547.

The charter of Henry VIII transferring the endowments of the parish (reference: HC1/2000-1), churchwardens' accounts 1526-1546 (reference: HA/1/1), and title deeds, probably from the parish records (reference: HC1/136, 200, 202, 1223, 281, 426, 1284, 1216-7, 659, 854, 1564, 1566-7, 1617) are held by St Bartholomew's Hospital Archives. A register of baptisms, marriages and burials, 1538-1547 is held by the Guildhall Library, Aldermanbury, London, EC2P 2EJ.
