Biographical history
In 1897 the Bank of British West Africa established itself at Freetown, Sierra Leone. In 1957 the bank changed its name to the Bank of West Africa. In 1965 the bank merged with Standard Bank Limited which in 1971 voluntarily incorporated the business as the Standard Bank of Sierra Leone Limited as a wholly-owned subsidiary company of Standard Bank, later to be a wholly owned subsidary of Standard Chartered Banking Group following the 1969 merger of Standard and Chartered Bank.

In 1965 the bank merged with Standard Bank Limited which in 1971 voluntarily incorporated the business as the Standard Bank of Sierra Leone Limited as a wholly-owned subsidiary company of Standard Bank, later to be a wholly owned subsidary of Standard Chartered Banking Group following the 1969 merger of Standard and Chartered Bank.
The bank's archives were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1989 and after. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
