One apprenticeship agreement.

The collection comprises correspondence, writings and administrative material relating to the Jenner family, particularly Dr. Edward Jenner (pioneer of smallpox vaccination) and the associated Black and Davies families, 1680-1877.

The material on Edward Jenner includes papers relating to organisations set up in the aftermath of his vaccination discoveries: the National Vaccine Establishment, the Royal Jennerian Society and the London Vaccine Institution.

This collection consists of apprenticeship indentures. Occupations mentioned include plumber, shoe maker, furniture maker, household servant, card maker, haberdasher, brass founder, jeweller, goldsmith, grocer, glazier, tailor, auctioneer, dress maker, wif maker, carpet weaver, saddle maker, clock and watch maker, painter, printer, spur maker, smith, engraver and gold beater.

Two notebooks with clinical details and descriptions of numerous cases, 1730-33

Notes by John Dixon on medical matters and on things of personal interest to him such as astrology and photography spanning his entire career, 1848-1903. MS.5191 comprises more formal material, namely certificates and indentures.

Manuscripts from the collection of the British Medical Association, formerly held in the BMA Library, Tavistock Square, London. The manuscripts were numbered and catalogued at the BMA, with two exceptions among these papers - however the numbering of surviving documents is not consecutive, so that the original collection must have contained at least 26 catalogued items and an unknown number of unrecorded acquisitions. Former BMA MSS.1-6 (transferred at the same time as the manuscripts described here) are now GC/140; one fugitive BMA manuscript was purchased separately and is now MS. 6881. The location of the remainder is not known. The contents mainly comprise transcripts of medical lectures and case notes.

Signed with the mark of Thomas West and sealed. A marginal note states 'Allowed by us Henry Parker'. Witnessed by John Ellyatt, clerk, and George Barnes.

Indenture of apprenticeship, 22 Aug 1780, between Samuel Thompson, son of William Thompson, sailmaker, of Liverpool, (with his father's consent), and Richard Heywood, banker, of Liverpool, for a term of 5 years at a wage of £15 a year, with William Thompson providing 'good and sufficient meat drink washing lodging and wearing apparel of all sorts' for his son. Signed and sealed by all parties, with James Greaves as witness.

Copy of an indenture of apprenticeship, 11 Feb, 1837, between Joseph Gordon Low, aged fourteen years, of the parish of St. John, Hampstead, (with the consent of his father, James Low, gardener, of Hampstead), and James Dowse, tailor, of Hampstead, for a term of 7 years. Consideration - £10 from the trustees of the Well Charity, Hampstead. Endorsed: 'Received of Mr. Toller the original indenture of apprenticeship this fifteenth day of August 1843'. Signed: 'Mary Ann Low'.

Printed indenture of apprenticeship, completed in manuscript, 5 Oct 1798, between James Rudge, son of James Rudge of Gloucester, upholsterer, and George Holder of Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, apothecary, for a term of 7 years, with Holder to provide meat, drink and bedding. The consideration is £10 paid by the Mayor and burgesses of Gloucester out of public charity money given by Mrs Jane Hunter, deceased. Signed and sealed by Holder and James Rudge, witnessed by William Birt. On the dorse is a note of the enrolment at the Tolsey in Gloucester, signed by Charles Howard, 11th Duke of Norfolk, mayor, and two others.
