David Urquhart (1805-1877) was a diplomat and a pioneer of the Turkish Bath in the United Kingdom, helping to establish one in Jermyn Street, London. His wife Harriet Angelina Urquhart (née Fortesque) was a literary figure under the pen-name 'Caritas'.

David Urquhart (1805-1877) was a diplomat and a pioneer of the Turkish Bath in the United Kingdom, helping to establish one in Jermyn Street, London. His wife Harriet Angelina Urquhart (née Fortesque) was a literary figure under the pen-name 'Caritas'.

Correspondence and papers of David Urquhart, 1821-1892, with associated family letters. Urquhart's correspondence gives details of the Turkish Bath in Jermyn Street, which he helped to establish (1860-1861), and his involvement with other similar institutions. Correspondence of Harriet Angelina Urquhart, largely on literary and religious topics.
Arranged in sections as follows: 1) Correspondence of David and Harriet Urquhart with various persons, mainly about Turkish baths and their medical applications; 2) Notes and press cuttings on Turkish baths, with related papers; 3) Correspondence of Harriet Angelina Urquhart, largely on literary and religious topics; 4) Letters to David Urquhart junior from various correspondents and 5) Miscellaneous fragments, including poems.
The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.
Photocopies/photographs/microfilm are supplied for private research only at the Archivist's discretion. Please note that material may be unsuitable for copying on conservation grounds, and that photographs cannot be photocopied in any circumstances. Readers are restricted to 100 photocopies in twelve months. Researchers who wish to publish material must seek copyright permission from the copyright owner.
